SHANDI NELSON LEADS RED LAKE FALLS TO VICTORY OVER CROOKSTON VOLLEYBALL

The Red Lake Falls Eagles used outstanding net play to beat the Crookston Pirate Volleyball team 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) at the Crookston High School Gymnasium.

FIRST SET
Crookston took a 4-1 lead to start the match before Red Lake Falls countered with seven straight points, including two kills from Shandi Nelson for an 8-4 lead. Red Lake Falls continued to pull away behind the stellar net play of Nelson and Elizabeth Lyle as they built a 21-12 lead after another Nelson kill. The teams played even after that, but Red Lake Falls won 25-17.

SECOND SET
Crookston took a 3-0 lead after an Emma LaPlante ace to start the second set. Red Lake Falls battled back with a block for a kill from Shandi Nelson, and the teams were tied at 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, and 12. Red Lake Falls took over the set behind a 10-0 run behind two Nelson kills, along with a block for a kill, a Jordan Wieland kill, and a Quinnlyn Kenfield dig for a kill, and before Crookston knew it, they were down 22-12. Crookston settled down and tried to battle back as they went on an 8-2 run sparked by a Kristine Bernd kill and capped by a Joey Nesseth ace to get within a 24-20 deficit. Red Lake Falls scored the next point and won the set 25-20.

THIRD SET
The third set was a back-and-forth battle as the teams were tied at 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10. Red Lake Falls took the lead behind back-to-back kills from Nelson as she continued her outstanding play at the net. Red Lake Falls held the lead between two and four points until Crookston got within a 19-18 deficit after three Eagle errors. Red Lake Falls settled down with back-to-back kills from Jordan Wieland, shich was followed by a Lytle kill. After a Red Lake Falls serve out of bounds, Lytle added another kill for a 23-19 lead. Nelson added a block and the Eagles scored another point for a 25-19 victory to win the match 3-0.

Crookston drops to 1-2 on the year and will travel to Sacred Heart on Thursday night, a match you can hear on KROX. Red Lake Falls improves to 1-2 on the year and will host the Northern Freeze on Tuesday, September 12.
