SPORTS FEEVER – August 29, 2019

We are officially into the Falls Sports Season with every sport having at least one event in by the end of the week.  Leo Blavin and I have completed the five area section football polls and previews and have links to all five later in the column.   THANKS to all the coaches for their cooperation with us over the past week.  We know the coaches are busy and we thank them for getting us the information.
The column is a little light this week because I have been working the morning shift and waking up at 4:30 in the morning and on Sunday I started watching Dedicated Survivor on Netflix and the first season is (in my eyes) one of the best series I have ever watched.  It has suspense, action, drama, a little comic relief once in a while.

I received some bad news last week when I found out that Crookston’s Katherine Geist has a boot on her foot and is out for six weeks.  If you don’t remember, this past spring she suffered a foot injury and struggled to finish the 1600 at the Section 8A Track meet and wasn’t able to run in the 3200 meters.  She had a boot on this summer and we found out that she has the boot on again and after six weeks if her foot isn’t better she will require surgery!
I hope her foot heals and she is able to run Cross Country this fall.  I will keep you updated when we find out more.

As we get ready for another year of Friday Night Lights (actually on Thursday this week for many teams) and we are excited for another year of High School Football.

We will start off our coverage tonight (Thursday) with a big rivalry game when East Grand Forks comes to Crookston.  It is a huge rivalry game and EGF beat up on Crookston pretty good last year, but they graduated 19 seniors while Crookston only graduated seven.
While East Grand Forks lost a lot of talent (a couple kids are playing at BSU and another is playing at Minnesota State Moorhead), they have a lot of talent and some big-time size coming back.  They have three starting offensive lineman that are close to 300 pounds and two of the lineman are 6’4 and 6’5!!!!  So they are some big boys.

On the flip side, Crookston struggled on the line last year and was overmatched in every game in the trenches.  That was the case before Leyton Salentine went down, but it became worse after his injury.  The Pirates are a year older and you win football games with seniors.  It should be a great game and an important game for both teams.

Speaking of football, we have all the football polls and previews below –

KROX has compiled the annual KROX Section Football Preseason Coaches Polls and Preview.  All five of the area sections are complete and are posted below.

SECTION 6 9-MAN –
The Win-E-Mac Patriots have been tabbed the favorite to win Section 6 9-Man.  Newcomer, Fertile-Beltram was a close second.  It will be interesting to see how Fertile-Beltrami adjusts to nine-man.  The poll and season preview are below –

SECTION 8 9-MAN-
The Section 8 9-Man Football coaches picked Stephen-Argyle to win another section championship, but Kittson Country Central is a close second place.  It wouldn’t be a surprise to anybody in northwest Minnesota if the two teams are playing at the Fargodome again this fall.  The poll and season preview are below –

SECTION 8A FOOTBALL
The Section 8A Football Coaches picked the defending Class A State champions Mahnomen-Waubun to win the section again this year, but Polk County West is a very close second place.  It is probably the closest anybody has been to Mahnomen and now Mahnomen-Waubun since we have been doing the polls.  Mahnomen-Waubun graduated most of their starters last year, but a lot of the returners played a lot of time at the state tournament last year so they will have another solid team.

SECTION 8AA FOOTBALL –
The Barnesville Trojans have been picked the defending Section 8AA champ and state runner-up to win the section once again.  They are the heavy favorite to win another championship.  The question is…. who will be playing them in the championship game in the Fargodome?  The coaches think it will be Hawley or Crookston.
The coaches poll and preview is below –

SECTION 8AAA FOOTBALL-
The Section 8AAA Coaches have picked the Perham Yellowjackets and the Pequot Lakes Patriots in a tie at the top of the section.  Again, no surprise that either team is up there.  It seems like one of the two teams if not both have been in the championship the past decade.  They are two good programs with great athletes and they seem to excel on the turf.

UMC Men’s Basketball had a big verbal commitment recently when Hunter Lyman, a 6’8 forward from West Fargo (ND) said he was going to come to school next year.  UMC Coach Dan Weisse was looking for a post and a couple of guards to add to the program next year and now he is down to a couple of guards.
It sounded like shorty after Lyman announced he had received a scholarship offer from UMC (made the decision the next day), Bemidji State, Minot State and others offered him too.

St. Cloud State is going to ask the state legislature for $8.5 million in a bonding bill to upgrade the 30-year-old refrigeration system at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The proposed project would reduce the size of the two sheets of ice and would also include getting new boards, Plexiglass, lighting, and improved humidity control. As a part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, St. Cloud State makes its capital requests through the system to the Minnesota State Legislature.

JOKES –

The Reporter
A cub reporter for a small-town newspaper was sent out on his first assignment. He submitted the following report to his editor.
“Mrs. Smith was injured in a one-car accident today. She is recovering in County Hospital with lacerations on her breasts.”
The Editor scolded the new reporter, saying. “This is a family paper. We don’t use words like breasts around here. Now go back and write something more appropriate!”
The young reporter thought long and hard. Finally, he handed the Editor the following report. “Mrs. Smith was injured in a one-car accident today. She is recovering in County Hospital with lacerations on her ( o )( o ) ”

Panicked father
After the baby was born, the panicked Japanese father went to see the obstetrician.
“Doctor,” he said, “I don’t mind telling you, but I’m a little upset because my daughter has red hair. She can’t possibly be mine.”
“Nonsense,” the doctor said. “Even though you and your wife both have black hair, one of your ancestors may have contributed red hair to the gene pool.”
“It isn’t possible,” the man insisted. “We’re pure Asian.”
“Well,” said the doctor, “let me ask you this. How often do you have sex?”
The man seemed ashamed. “I’ve been working very hard for the past year. We only made love once or twice a month.”
“There you have it!” the doctor said confidently. “It’s just rust.”

A young gay man calls home and…
A young gay man calls home and tells his Jewish mother that he has decided to go back into the closet because he has met a wonderful girl and they are going to be married. He tells his mother that he is sure she will be happier since he knows that his gay lifestyle has been very disturbing to her.
She responds that she is indeed delighted and asks tentatively, “I suppose it would be too much to hope that she would be Jewish?”
He tells her that not only is the girl Jewish, but is from a wealthy Beverly Hills family. She admits she is overwhelmed by the news, and asks, “What is her name?”
He answers, “Monica Lewinsky.”
There is a long pause, then his mother asks, “What happened to that nice Catholic boy you were dating last year?”
