SPORTS FEEVER – DECEMBER 20, 2018

Next week I will have the annual A to Z list and if you have a suggestion for any of the 26 letters (A through Z) let me know by email and I might add it to this years list that I am working on.

Thanks for reading this week and if you ever have some sports info you think might be of interest email it to me at chrisjfee@yahoo.com.  I am always looking for more info to pass along to you.

I would also like to wish each and every one of you and your families a MERRY CHRISTMAS!  I hope you are able to enjoy the holiday and get refreshed for a long month of January!

Last week I received an email from former UMC Football player and all-around good guy Carl Aho and I asked him if he would be willing to give the Feever reader an update on what he is up to these days.  He said he wasn’t sure if people would be interested, but I think you would be.  Carl was a wide receiver for the Golden Eagle Football team from 1996-1999.  He had 135 career receptions for 1,762 yards and 23 touchdowns. So he gave me the following response.

I’m working in my hometown of Cokato, MN as a systems administrator for Advanced Process Technologies. I believe the degree was called Information Networking Management when I was at UMC, so I’m putting that to good use. My wife Janet and I have 10 kids ranging in age from 19 to 6. I come from a family of 15 so 10 is a good start, but we must be getting old because my youngest is now 6 and there are no signs of any babies on the way. I know I’m getting older as I just recently had a hip replaced due to a degenerative condition in one of my hips. So that’s slowing me down temporarily, but my kids do keep me young. My older children are all girls so we’ve been keeping the volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, and track teams supplied with athletes. My oldest boy is now 5th grade so the boys will have some decisions to make sports-wise in a couple of years as they all enjoy pretty much every sport (as do I). I’m also coaching the boys basketball C team (9th and 10th graders) at Dassel-Cokato HIgh School and really enjoying doing that.
Life has pretty much been a whirlwind it seems since my time at UMC with all the kids and their various activities they’ve been in and now they’ve started heading off to college (no college athletes yet), but it’s been fun keeping up on everything with UMC and Crookston via the KROX webpage. I’ve particularly enjoyed the recent success a couple of the wide receivers have had up there (Adam Connette and Rod Stewart). It’s always fun to see athletes get rewarded for all their hard work they put in and to see those guys go on and surpass was I was able to do in my years there at UMC was a lot of fun. Keep up the great work on the website. I know there are many former UMC athletes like myself who really enjoy reading all the happenings up there every week so we really appreciate all the work you put into it!

Since we are halfway through the month of December, I am going to take a look at the Section 8AA and 8A basketball and Section 8A hockey.

SECTION 8AA BOYS BASKETBALL –

The top team right now is Perham.  Their only loss is to the #1 ranked Minnehaha Academy and the Yellowjackets have a big win over Breckenridge and they played without Jensen Beachy because he was at the state all-star football game!

Hawley and Osakis have to be the next two teams with Breckenridge and East Grand Forks rounding out the top five.  According to the QRF, Breckenridge is the sixth best team in the south subsection and 77th overall.

My rankings are below (all rankings subject to change and can change after each night)-
North Sub-section  (Everybody has at least two wins so far)
1. Hawley
2. East Grand Forks
3. DGF
4. Roseau
5. Thief River Falls
6. Crookston
7. Bagley
8. Warroad

South Sub-section (everybody has at least one win)
1. Perham
2. Breckenridge
3. Osakis
4. Barnesville
5. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle
6. Park Rapids
7. Wadena-Deer Creek
8. Staples-Motley

SECTION 8A BOYS BASKETBALL

Cass Lake-Bena has proven they are the top team by a pretty large margin overall.  The second through five spots are up for grabs.  I am thinking Ada-Borup, Sacred Heart, BGMR, Win-E-Mac and Clearbrook-Gonvick have all turned in a great start to the season and they are showing Section 8A will have a handful of teams fighting for the top spot when March rolls along.

My rankings are below (all rankings subject to change and can change after each night)-

East Sub-section-
1. Cass Lake-Bena
2. Win-E-Mac
3. Clearbrook-Gonvick
4. Red Lake
5. Fosston
6. Goodridge-Grygla
7. Northome-Kelliher
8. Blackduck
9. Lake of the Woods

West Subsection-
1. Ada-Borup
2. Sacred Heart
3. BGMR
4. Kittson County Central
5. Northern Freeze
6. Fertile-Beltrami
7. Stephen-Argyle
8. Red Lake County
9. Climax-Fisher
10. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo

SECTION 8AA GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Section hs some teams that have shown they are going to give Roseau a run this year.  Right now Roseau is still my top team overall, but Hawley East Grand Forks, DGF and Crookston have shown they can/could be there.  Crookston plays good defense, but offensively (like most teams in NW Minnesota this year) they struggle and when they play good teams they haven’t scored much.  My rankings are below (all rankings subject to change and can change after each night)-

North Sub-section-
1. Roseau
2. Hawley
3. East Grand Forks
4. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (will find out Thursday night if DGF or Crookston is 4th)
5. Crookston
6. Thief River Falls
7. Bagley
8. Warroad

South Sub-section
1. Park Rapids
2. Breckenridge
3. Barnesville
4. Perham
5. Staples-Motley
6. Wadena-Deer Creek
7. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle
8. Frazee

SECTION 8A GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Stephen-Argyle Storm have shown they are the top team right now after wins over Red Lake.  I was said Red Lake is still second, Warren-Alvarado-Oslo is third and Red Lake Falls, BGMR, Lake of the Woods, and Kittson County Central and Red Lake County Central wrap up the top seven.

My rankings are below (all rankings subject to change and can change after each night)-

West subsection –
1. Stephen-Argyle
2. Warren-A-O
3. Red Lake Falls
4. BGMR
5. Kittson County Central
6. Northern Freeze
7. Red Lake County Central
8. Sacred Heart
9. Fertile-Beltrami
10. Climax-Fisher

East Sub-section
1. Red Lake
2. Fosston
3. Lake of the Woods
4. Win-E-Mac
5. Clearbrook-Gonvick
6. Goodridge-Grgyla
7. Kelliher-Northome
8. Cass Lake-Bena
9. Blackduck

SECTION 8A GIRLS HOCKEY –

Warroad has flexed their muscles and is, as expected, the team to beat.  They have beaten East Grand Forks and Thief River Falls, although both teams could pull off the upset come February!  We will see, but my money is on Warroad to win the section and state!

My rankings are below (all rankings subject to change and can change after each night)-
1. Warroad
2. East Grand Forks
3. Thief River Falls
4. Detroit Lakes
5. Crookston
6. Park Rapids

SECTION 8A BOYS HOCKEY

The East Grand Forks Green Wave have shown early on they are the team to beat in the section.  They are very good, have some depth and are the most solid team from top to bottom in the section.  Thief River Falls, Warroad, and Detroit Lakes are all in the top 4.  Right now 5-10 are a toss up.  Crookston is capable of being in the top four conversation, but haven’t shown it in a section game yet.

My rankings are below (all rankings subject to change and can change after each night)-
1. East Grand Forks
2. Thief River Falls
3. Warroad (gets the nod over DL by the strength of schedule)
4. Detroit Lakes (we will find out in the first two weeks of January if they are the real deal)
5. Crookston (Jekyll and Hyde – have been pretty good at times and they have struggled at times- sometimes both in the same game)
6. Red Lake Falls
7. Lake of the Woods
8. Kittson County Central
9. Bagley-Fosston
10. Park Rapids

Augustana University has announced they will be transitioning to a Division I intercollegiate athletic conference.  The talk has been rampant about what is next for the conference because they will have 15 teams.  The most popular possibility on social media from Sioux Falls to Marshall, to Bemidji, and other areas all haven’t been complimentary to the hometown school.  I have been trying to get some information on what the conference might do, but haven’t heard anything concrete.   Below is the press release from the NSIC.

Augustana has been a member of the NSIC since July 1, 2008.  The Vikings’ goal is to secure an invitation to a Division I conference by the 2021-22 academic year.

“Augustana has been a pivotal contributor to the success of the NSIC over the past decade.  They have represented the NSIC well in competition, in the classroom, and in their community.  We wish all the student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans the best in the future,” said NSIC Commissioner Erin Lind.

“The NSIC has begun to implement strategies to ensure the excellent student-athlete experience that our institutions are accustomed to continues,” said Lind.  “The 15 member institutions remain committed to NCAA Division II and the mission of the conference.  The NSIC will continue to operate from a position of strength and will utilize the conference strategic plan to guide our discussions surrounding membership as we move forward.”

Dr. Steve Shirley, president of Minot State University and chair of the NSIC Board of Directors, commented, “While we wish Augustana, its student-athletes, coaches, and administration all the best with the forthcoming transition, we are also excited about the current direction and future of the NSIC. Our 15 member institutions are strong, and our Board is in the midst of developing a new five-year strategic plan that will guide the NSIC as we move forward as the preeminent conference and best home for student-athletes in all of NCAA Division II Athletics.”

The NSIC is an 18-sport, NCAA Division II conference with teams located in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.  The mission of the NSIC is to promote, conduct and regulate competitive sports programs which will assist student-athletes in their successful athletic, academic and personal development.  The NSIC has claimed 21 team national championships since 2006.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has signed an agreement with the Sioux Falls (SD) Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) to become a corporate partner of the 16-member league.

“We are very happy to have the Sioux Falls CVB as a corporate partner,” said NSIC Commissioner Erin Lind. “Sioux Falls is a tremendous supporter of the NSIC and we are glad NSIC contests and tournaments are among the numerous events the Sioux Falls CVB helps attract to the city.”

“We look forward to partnering with the NSIC to continue working together. The NSIC always puts on excellent events and tournaments, and they do a wonderful job of supporting all of those involved,” said Teri Schmidt, Executive Director, Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau

This partnership will involve marketing assets within the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament as well as conference-wide activation across the five-state footprint of the NSIC.

JOKES (Do you have any good jokes – email them to chrisjfee@yahoo.com and I will put them in the feever

The Doctor said: “The good news is I can cure your headaches…The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition which causes your testicles to press up against the base of your spine and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles.”
Joe was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He couldn’t concentrate long enough to answer, but decided he had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital, he was headache free for the first time in over 20 years, but he felt as if he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street he realized he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life. He saw a men’s clothing store and thought, “That’s what I need, a new suit.”
The elderly salesman eyed him quickly and said, “Let’s see, you’re a size 44 long.”
Joe laughed and said, “That’s right, how did you know?”
“Been in the business 60 years!”
Joe tried on the suit. It fit perfectly. As Joe admired himself in the mirror, the tailor asked, “How about a new shirt?” Joe thought for a moment and then said, “Sure.”
“Let’s see, 16 and a half neck, 34 sleeve.”
Joe was surprised. “How did you know?”
“Been in the business 60 years.” The shirt fit perfectly.
As Joe looked at himself in the mirror, the salesman said, “You could use new shoes.”
Since Joe was on a roll, he said, “Sure.”
The man eyed Joe’s feet and said, “9-1/2E.”
Joe was astonished. “That’s right. How did you know?”
“Been in the business 60 years.” Joe tried on the shoes and they also fit perfectly.
As Joe walked comfortably around the shop, the salesman asked, “How about new underwear?”
Joe thought for a second and said, “Why not.”
The man stepped back, eyed Joe’s waist and said, “Let’s see, size 36.”
Joe laughed. “Finally I’ve got you! I’ve worn size 32 since I was 18 years old.”
The tailor shook his head. “You can’t wear a size 32. Size 32 underwear would press your testicles against the base of your spine and give you one hell of a headache.”

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said,
‘Jesus knows you’re here.’
He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze.
When he heard nothing more , after a bit, he shook his head and continued.
Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a be*l he heard
‘Jesus is watching you.’
Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice.
Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.
‘Did you say that?’ he hissed at the parrot.
‘Yep’, the parrot confessed, then squawked, ‘I’m just trying to warn you that he is watching you.’
The burglar relaxed. ‘Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?’
‘Moses,’ replied the bird.
‘Moses?’ the burglar laughed. ‘What kind of people would name a bird Moses?’
‘The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus.’
