SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

The Minnesota Twins have won 10 game in a row.  If you are wondering what the longest winning streak was, check out the list below-

15 games (1991)
12 games (1980)
11 games (2006, 2003)
10 games (*2024*, 2008, 1985, 1963)

Yes seven of the games are against the White Sox, but they are winning games they should.

Speaking of Minnesota Sports, the Minnesota Timberwolves took care of business and swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Now they take on Denver in the Western Conference semi-finals. It should be a heckuva series and I am predicting a seven game series.  Game 1 is on Saturday night and KROX will have the game on the radio.

We have found out a few changes for Section tournaments this year.

Section 8A baseball sounds like it will be held at Jim Karn Field in Crookston this year. For several years the coaches wanted to move the tournament (every other year) from Thief River Falls to Crookston. Thief River Falls’ field is average at best and there is no permanent seating for the fans. Crookston has a beautiful new grand stand, has plenty of permanent stadium seating. Crookston’s Jim Karn Field has a better scoreboard, but it does have a smaller press box, but if it is nice out, there is room for radio outside the Pressbox too.

Region 6A took over Section 8AA Boys and Girls golf, and it is a surprise to anyone that it has turned into a gong show. Region 6A has to be one of the worst operated in the state. They make decisions without getting input from all the coaches and only make decisions (it seems) on what teams along Highway 10/Heart O’ Lakes want.
With that said, the Section 8AA Boys and Girls Golf has dropped the sub-section golf tournaments this year. The coaches have voted to keep the sub-sections for the past several years. Now that Region 6A has taken over, there was no vote, and it was decided, without coaches or A.D. input, that they would drop the sub-section. I have been told by a handful of coaches that it is because the teams from the south think they are better this year and could have five teams make it to sections, so they didn’t want sub-sections so they would have a chance to have five teams instead of four if there was a sub-section.

This is exactly why the Section 8AA basketball tournament changes every year. I believe they try to make it the best for the teams in the South. The reason why when Roseau Girls were kicking the crap out of all the teams from the south, they wanted North and South Sub-sections. When the South had better teams, they switched it to 1-16 seeding. I believe it has nothing to do with what is right, it is to help the teams from the south.
If I were a superintendent, A.D., or coach in the north for golf or basketball, I would look into a group protest to Region 6A hosting basketball or golf.
If the golf coaches had voted and the coaches had voted to drop sub-sections, I would have no problem with it. When the region is making the choice to make changes without input, that is wrong and a sign of terrible leadership. Or at least tell the coaches why you are doing it and communicate it. When people are confident in their decisions, they have no problem telling people like coaches and media when they make the decision. But when you are making a shady decision, people tend to hide it and not let people know until the last second so nobody can do anything about it.

In all honesty, it really doesn’t matter how many girl’s teams from the south make it sections because they will get whooped by Detroit Lakes, who is back in the section for at least two years.  On the boy’s side, which is more wide open, Hawley, Roseau, Detroit Lakes, and Fergus Falls are the favorites going in as of now.

We have some bad news. University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Softball Coach Nick Weinmeister has resigned. Unfortunately, his mother is having some health issues, so he needs to move back to Iowa to be closer to her. We wish the best of luck to Coach Weinmeister with everything and it was too bad because he was building a solid program that got better each year under his leadership. They are actually competitive now and it is all because of his leadership. We are also praying for his mom too. Just a terrible deal all-around.

University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Softball player, Whitnee Curry (Jr., MIF/OF, Lincoln, Neb.) was named to the 2024 NSIC All-Conference first team on Tuesday afternoon.
Curry becomes the first Golden Eagle to be named to an All-Conference team since Dana Zarn was named to the All-NSIC second team in 2022. Curry is the second Golden Eagle to be named to the first team and first since McKenzie Smith was named to the first team back in 2002.

Curry played in 50 games this season, starting every game she played in. The Lincoln, Neb., native hit .340 on the season, the second best in a season in her career. Curry tied a career-high with 48 hits on the year and drew 20 walks on the year, while scoring 13 runs.

On the year, Curry had a hit in more than half of the games she played in and had 12 multi-hit games on the year, including a 5-5 game against Sioux Falls, which was a career-high for hits in a game and tied for most hits in a game in program history.

Curry finished her junior season third on the team with 22 RBI on the year and had the second highest OPS, as well. In the field, Curry made just five errors on 204 chances, spending a majority of her time in the field at shortstop.

Minnesota Crookston set the school record for most wins in NSIC play.

JOKES

An elderly couple who were childhood sweethearts had married & settled down in their old neighborhood.

To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary they walk down to their old school. There, they hold hands as they find the desk they shared & where he had carved “I love you, Sally”.

On their way back home, a bag of money falls out of an armoured car practically at their feet. She quickly picks it up, & they don’t know what to do with it so they take it home. There, she counts the money, & its fifty-thousand dollars.

The husband says: “We’ve got to give it back”.

She says, “Finders keepers” & puts the money back in the bag & hides it up in their attic.

The next day, two policemen are going from door-to-door in the neighbourhood looking for the money show up at their home.

One knocks on the door & says: “Pardon me, but did either of you find any money that fell out of an armoured car yesterday?”

She says: “No”..

The husband says: “She’s lying. She hid it up in the attic.”

She says: “Don’t believe him, he’s getting senile.”

But the policemen sit the man down & begin to question him.

One says: “Tell us the story from the beginning.”

The old man says: “Well, when Sally & I were walking home from school yesterday …”

At this, the policeman looks at his partner & says: “We’re outta here …”

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Fridayevening with a beautiful young gal at his side.

He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for hisgirlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring andshowed it to him.

The old man said, “I don’t think you understand, I want something veryspecial.”

At that Statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and broughtanother ring over.

“Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000,” the jeweler said. The younglady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement.

The old man seeing this said, “We’ll take it.”

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, bycheck. “I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I’ll write itnow and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I’ll pickthe ring up Monday afternoon,” he said.

Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweler phoned the old man. “There’s nomoney in that account.”

“I know,” said the old man, “but can you imagine the weekend I had?”

Don’t mess with Old People.

A man has six children and is very proud of his achievement. He is so proud of himself, that he starts calling his wife, “Mother of Six” in spite of her objections.

One night, they go to a party. The man decides that it’s time to go home and wants to find out if his wife is ready to leave as well.

He shouts at the top of his voice, “Shall we go home now, ‘Mother of six?'”

His wife, irritated by her husband’s lack of discretion, shouts right back, “Anytime you’re ready, Father of four.”
