The spring continues to be crappy. On Wednesday, the Minnesota Twins game at Los Angeles was postponed because of bad field conditions. It rained hard in the afternoon and the field had too much water and the field wasn’t playable. The Twins had checked out of their hotel room, all the luggage was at the airport ready to go on the plane after the game. So the Twins had to find a hotel for 40-plus rooms available, they had to get their luggage from the airport and bring it to the hotel and get ready to play the game on Thursday. Even the Twins have been affected time after time this year!!
With that said, Crookston Pirate Baseball team was hosting Thief River Falls on Wednesday and the game was suspended after the fourth inning. The team decided to finish the game at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and they added another game after the first game is finished. It is a good idea for two section opponents to play each other twice (or actually one and a half times on Thursday).
The miserable spring continues and it looks like rain is in the forecast next week too, so we will see how the playoffs go the rest of the way.
Again, good luck to all teams in the playoffs!!! Enjoy this week’s Sports Feever column and if you have any information that should be shared with northwest Minnesota sports fans, go send it to me at chrisjfee@yahoo.com!

I was covering the Minnesota Track and Field Coaches Association True Team Class A State track meet at Stillwater High School last Saturday and was in awe at the athletic facilities at Stillwater High School. They have an artificial turf field with a beautiful track and large seating on both sides of the field. They have two practice fields that are turf. Yes, you read that right…..TWO PRACTICE fields that are turfed. They have an amazing weight room, rec center and everything else you could imagine.
I had a coach from one of the track teams (not Crookston) say to me “Why would anybody from Stillwater High School ever want to play football at UMC?” He was talking about the huge disparity in facilities. Stillwater High School’s football/athletic facilities are 100 times nicer than UMC. That might be an understatement. But the coach raises a problem I have been trying to get the head brass at UMC to realize. UMC’s facilities aren’t as nice as most high schools in the metro area (where you are going to get most of your players).

Congratulations to Crookston High School grad, Katie Davidson, on her new job as the Minnesota Lynx beat writer for the Athletic. If you’re not familiar with the Athletic, it is an online news agency that has A LOT of money invested in it. It is a paid news service and they announced a couple of weeks ago they were going to cover all 12 WNBA teams.
Congratulations to Katie on the job and it will be interesting to see how the Lynx do without two of the best that have worn the Lynx uniform not playing this year (Lindsey Whalen and Mya Moore).

Shakopee High School has hired former Minnesota Viking long-snapper, Mike Morris, to be their Strength and Conditioning coach!!! The metro area schools have so many advantages and one of them is most of the big schools are run like or better than college programs. They have nicer facilities and put big money into athletics. Shakopee also has 10 varsity football coaches. That is more than most northwest Minnesota high school football programs (7-12).

I can’t believe the MIAC actually went through with kicking St. Thomas out of the conference!!!!!! Concordia College, St. Olaf, Carleton, Hamline, Augsburg, Gustavus, St. Mary’s, Macalester, St. Catherine all voted to get rid of St. Thomas. Bethel didn’t have the guts to vote either way. The only schools voting to keep St. Thomas were St. Thomas, St. Johns and St. Benedict. The information below is from the MIAC.
After extensive membership discussions, the University of St. Thomas will be involuntarily removed from membership in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The MIAC Presidents’ Council cites athletic competitive parity in the conference as a primary concern. St. Thomas will begin a multi-year transition immediately and meanwhile is eligible to compete as a full member of the MIAC through the end of spring 2021.
St. Thomas is one of seven founding members of the MIAC and will leave the conference in good standing with a long and appreciated history of academic and athletic success.
MIAC TRANSITION INFORMATION
The following information is being provided as additional content regarding the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and the University of St. Thomas. Joint Statement with St. Thomas “After extensive membership discussions, the University of St. Thomas will be involuntarily removed from membership in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The MIAC Presidents’ Council cites athletic competitive parity in the conference as a primary concern. St. Thomas will begin a multi-year transition immediately and meanwhile, is eligible to compete as a full member of the MIAC through the end of spring 2021. St. Thomas is one of seven founding members of the MIAC and will leave the conference in good standing with a long and appreciated history of academic and athletic success.”
MIAC Facts MIAC Governance
– The MIAC is a NCAA Division III conference with 13 members (private institutions located in Minnesota), sponsoring 22 sports.
– Membership of the conference is determined by the MIAC Presidents’ Council, comprised of each President of member institutions.
– While no formal vote was held, all 13 MIAC presidents agreed to a transition that will end St. Thomas’ membership in the conference by the spring of 2021.
MIAC Membership
– The MIAC has the fourth-longest active streak of unchanged membership in NCAA. Changes in membership for collegiate athletic conferences have become increasingly common in recent years.
– Longest unchanged conferences: 1) Ivy League (D1 FCS) 1954, 2) MASCAC (DIII) 1982, 3) NESCAC (DIII) 1982, 4) MIAC (DIII) 1985
– The MIAC has seen numerous changes in membership, both large and small, throughout its 99-year history, with only one school, Saint John’s University, remaining a full member since the inception of the league in 1920.
– The addition of the College of Saint Benedict in 1985 was the last time membership changed in the MIAC.
– The last full member to leave the MIAC was the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1975. UMD was admitted into the MIAC in 1949.
– The University of St. Thomas, a founding member in 1920, withdrew from MIAC membership on March 21, 1925 before being readmitted on December 23, 1927. St. Thomas began as an all-male college and converted to a co-educational institution in 1977.
MIAC History –
The MIAC was formed on March 15, 1920. The MIAC is the 12th oldest conference in the NCAA (all divisions).
Competition –
The University of St. Thomas has won 12 straight men’s and women’s MIAC All-Sports Awards (2008-2019). – The University of St. Thomas won 47% (155) of all MIAC Championships (both team and individual sports) awarded from 2003- 2018. Over the last five years (2013-18), UST won 62 MIAC Championships (56%). – The University of St. Thomas earned 32% (67 of 210) of the MIAC’s Automatic Qualifiers to the NCAA Postseason (playoff champion, plus football regular season champion) from 2003-2018. UST earned 25 AQs (36%) in the last five years (2013-18).
Quotes
“We have had to navigate some challenging conversations with respect to membership over the last several years. After extensive discussions, the Presidents’ Council determined that there was no path forward that preserved the MIAC in its current form. For that reason, we have come to this agreement. Throughout this process, our goal has been to preserve the MIAC as a well-respected Division III athletic conference for the sake of our more than 7,000 student-athletes. Supporting the experiences and well-being of those student-athletes will continue to be our primary focus moving forward.” -Rebecca Bergman, currently serving as Chair of MIAC Presidents’ Council (President, Gustavus Adolphus College)
“Like every other collegiate athletic conference, we consistently evaluate membership. We have been fortunate to avoid membership changes for 35 years, which really is extraordinary. The attention and passion displayed over the past several months demonstrate how much this conference means to so many people.” -Dan McKane, MIAC Commissioner
The move by the MIAC has set up a perfect transition for the Northern Sun Conference that the University of Minnesota Crookston is a member of, along with Bemidji State, Minnesota State Moorhead, Minot State, University of Mary, Northern State, Wayne State (Nebraska), Upper Iowa, Winona State, Concordia University-St. Paul, Southwest Minnesota State, University of Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State, Minnesota State-Mankato, University of Sioux Falls and the member that has announced they are leaving for Division 1 in 2021, Augustana.
It will be interesting to see where St. Thomas ends up, but I am guessing if they don’t elect Division 1, they could end up in the NSIC, but no hockey in the NSIC might cause some problems for St. Thomas unless they decide to move hockey to Division 1.

The Section 8A Soccer tournament will have a new look in the fall. The new format will give the top four teams in each sub-section double byes.
It will mean the subsection #5 seed will play the #8 seed and the #6 seed will host the #7 seed in the first round of the playoffs.
Another change will take away cross-bracketing in the semi-finals. Part of the reason for the changes is the addition of another St. Cloud School with the addition of St. Cloud Tech and the strength of the section in the north with Bemidji and East Grand Forks being two of the top teams and the southern schools HATE traveling up north for a game, especially on a school night.
The changes are on a two-year interim trial and they will see how it works.

We had our first spring sports section champion crowned on Tuesday with the Thief River Falls Prowlers winning the Section 8A Boys Tennis championship by beating Perham 6-1. TRF was ranked fifth in the state, pretty much all season long, and will represent the section well.
Thief River Falls will play # ranked St. Paul Academy and Summit School in the first round. In the second round, they would play Rochester Lourdes if they win or Luvurne if they lose.
The Section 8A Boys Tennis Individual tournament will wrap up on Thursday with two doubles teams and two singles players advancing to the state tournament. The two tournaments have pretty much gone as expected so far.
DOUBLES –
#1 seed Blake Fee and Logan Wardner of Crookston will meet their teammates #4 seed Nick Garmen and Jack Garmen in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will have #2 seed Noah Rupprecht and Tucker Skime of TRF playing #6 seed Gabriel Hanninen and Trey Seebold of Detroit Lakes.
The semi-final match with two Crookston teams will suck for yours truly and all Pirate parents involved. You want your kid to win, but at the same time, you want the Garmen boys to win too. I have known all four since they were little and I still remember when Jack was born premature and they weren’t sure if he was going to make it or not for a while. Obviously, Jack made it and he is a big strong healthy boy and whatever happens in the match, I just hope both teams win the next match so whoever loses gets a true second match and a chance for both Pirate teams to go to state!!!
SINGLES –
The top four seeds all advanced to the semi-finals. #1 seed Cole Gillespie of TRF will play his teammate #4 seed Camden Broadwell. The Prowler fans will be thinking the same thing as the Pirate fans on the doubles side.
The other semi-final match will have #2 seed Tate Reichmann of Minnewaska Area and #3 seed Ben Kern of East Grand Forks and defending Section champion.
There will be some great matches played at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday in Detroit Lakes.

The Section 8A Baseball tournament seeds have been announced with Badger-Greenbush-Middle River getting the top seed in the West sub-section and the Fosston Greyhounds earning the top seed in the east sub-section.
I think it is safe to say this year’s tournament is WIDE open. You have 5 to 8 teams that all have a chance to win the championship. The best game is always a 4 vs 5, but this year it is pretty much guaranteed to be the best game with two of the top pitchers in northwest Minnesota facing off in the first round. It will be interesting to see how the first round games go and don’t be surprised if there are some upsets.
The first round of the tournament will begin on Thursday at the high seeds.

The Big Ten Conference is flooded with cash and the waters just keep getting higher.
The Big Ten pulled in a whopping $759 million during its fiscal year of 2018, due in large part to TV revenue. That equates to about $54 million apiece for 12 of the 14 conference schools (Maryland and Rutgers received a smaller portion).
The $54 million per school marked an increase of 48 percent from the fiscal year of 2017.
Here is a comparison to other conferences –
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) reported just under $660 million in revenue for fiscal 2018, resulting in an average of $43.7 million being distributed to the 13 member schools that received full shares. Mississippi did not get a full share because its football team was banned from postseason play.
The 10-team Big 12 recently reported $374 million in revenue for 2018

9th-12th grade 1 pm – 4 pm (co-ed)
Cost is $125, including a water bottle
Register Online at www.theclba.com
Christian Laettner is a retired NBA 13-year veteran whose hall-of-fame career for the Duke Blue Devils is widely regarded as one of the greatest in National Collegiate Athletic Association history. Coach Laettner will provide a fun, learning environment for the committed basketball player looking to improve their game, with a focus on skill development, striving to help players improve their ball handling, and passing, while increasing their understanding of offensive and defensive concepts. There will be great attention to detail on the core fundamentals of the game. Players, nowadays, love to dribble, dribble, dribble the ball. With that in mind, the teaching point this academy will stress the most is “catch the ball, save your dribble-and look to pass first!”. This concept is often overlooked in today’s game with the younger players – so the coaches will stress how ball movement is a key ingredient to a players game and offensive efficiency!

A man was very much in love with a woman. One day she told him that the next day was her birthday. He told her he would send her a bouquet of roses… one for each year of her life.
That evening he ordered twenty-one roses with instructions that they be delivered first thing the next morning. As the florist was preparing the order, he decided that since the young man was such a good customer, he would put an extra dozen roses in the bouquet.
The fellow never found out what made his girlfriend so angry with him.

A guy was in a cave, looking for treasure. He found an old lamp, rubbed it, and a genie came out. The genie said “I will grant you three wishes, but your ex-wife will get double.” The man agreed, and said “I wish I had a mansion.” The genie granted it, and his ex-wife got two mansions. The man said “I would like a million dollars.” The genie again granted it and his ex-wife got two million dollars. Then the man said, “Scare me half to death.”

A woman and a baby were in the doctor’s examining room, waiting for the Doctor to come in for the baby’s first exam. The Doctor arrived, examined the baby, checked his weight, and seeming a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-fed or bottle-fed.
“Breast-fed,” she replied.
“Strip down to your waist,” the Doctor said. She did. He pinched her nipples, then pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a detailed examination. Motioning her to get dressed, he said, “No wonder this baby is underweight, you don’t have any milk.”
“I know,” she said, “I’m his Grandma, but I’m glad I came.”
