It is hard to believe on Friday night, we will only have 4 and a half weeks left of the regular season for high school football. The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team is playing five games this week and that is 1/3 of their schedule!!!!! Craziness. I am thinking we will wait until after next weeks column to start breaking down Section Football, Volleyball and the rest of the sports.
I have had a very busy summer, I know you could care less, but I am now done training a new news Director (I was the news director most of the summer besides all my other duties) and we are working on a pretty big project that you will hopefully know more about next week or the week after…..God willing.
We will see what happens, but I am anxiously awaiting the announcement!
The column will start getting a little more detail as far as local sports news goes in the next couple of weeks. Although I have been able to get some pretty good news this week with limited time devoted to it.
This week I will take on my former Elementary Principal Ray Dusek in the first football picks of the year and I have Christian Brothers Ford Salesman and former KROX Salesman, Tom Helgeson picking next week! I also will have a longtime coach, a great fisherman and great guy Jim Lien picking against me after that. If you want to get it on this action….email me at chrisjfee@yahoo.com!!

Frank Fee recently wrote a letter to the editor that was published in the Star Tribune last week. Frank wrote about how Joe Mauer is a great kid, role model and more. I was at a Minnesota Twins Radio Network function on Saturday night and I Andrew Halvorson (Twins Radio Network manager) say he loved the press release and Twins President Dave St. Peter said the same (he also shared on Twitter – which Frank has no idea what that is). Joe must have heard about the letter because he hit a Grand Slam on Tuesday and on Wednesday he is contemplating retirement!!!! I have included Frank’s letter below –
A message to Joe Mauer:
Joe, I hope I can call you Joe, as I’ve been watching you from afar since your Cretin-Derham Hall days.
I just want to thank you for being Joe Mauer all these years. Someone my children and now grandchildren have looked up to. That’s despite the media’s penchant to criticize you because you don’t hit enough home runs, are not a good interview and don’t get in trouble and give them something else to write about.
You were the All-American kid growing up in St. Paul. You have exceeded our expectations as a baseball player and, more importantly, as a human being. There is a reason that with all the great baseball players to come through the Twins organization during your career, you have been and still are the most popular Minnesota Twin. You and your wife’s contributions to different charitable organizations, with little fanfare, are to be commended, as well.
I know your much-talked-about contract is set to expire at the end of this season, and I know I can speak for many Twins fans in hoping the organization sees the wisdom of bringing you back. However that works out, don’t ever don another major league uniform, please! I remember when Harmon Killebrew came back to Minnesota in a Kansas City Royals uniform, and it was hard to watch.
As the Madden commercial back in the day once said, “Well played Mauer, well played!”
FRANK FEE, Crookston, Minn.

UMC Men’s Basketball got a verbal commitment from Tyrese Shines, a 6’3 200 pound guard from Lyons Township High School in Lyons, Illinois. (near Chicago). Yes, the same Lyons Township High School that former NBA player Jeff Hornacek graduated from. Shines was an Illinois 3A/4A (Big School) All-State Honorable mention. He was all-conference and he is a good get for Coach Dan Weisse and his staff. A big strong guard that can shoot the three or drive and he plays solid defense Most of his scores come in the paint and by using his quick second jump in the paint and he is a solid rebounding combo guard. And from all online reports, he is a great teammate. He won me over by only having 81 tweets! That is a winner in my book, because it isn’t about him. Most of his re-tweets were of teammates or AAU teammates getting press or scholarship offers.
Shines was also being recruited by low/mid majors – Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, and Kent State. Shines was on an official visit last weekend and it must have gone well because he verbally committed to play at UMC next year.

Speaking of recruiting, I have heard the UMC Women’s Basketball program has already completed their 2019 recruiting class. I am thinking that is the earliest Coach Mike Roysland has completed a recruiting class!

This week is the season premiere of the Sports Feever Football picks. I put an invite and we have received some interest and have our first few weeks covered. The first “victim” is a familiar face to most Crookston kids. Ray Dusek, a long-time elementary school principal and a big sports fan of Crookston High School, UMC and area teams. Mr. Dusek is like most teachers and administrators. You respect them sometimes fear them and never get to really know them when you are a student. Or you know them only as a teacher or administrator and after you graduate and “grow up” you start to realize they are pretty cool and great people. Mr. Dusek is one of those people, he is a great guy and I love chatting with him whenever I see him. I can honestly say I never thought I would get know him like I have and I am glad I have!!!
Mr. Dusek graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture. He got his Bachelor’s Degree from Mayville State University. Ray married Terry Gaffney in Perham in 1963.
He taught 6th grade for four years in Crookston and was Elementary Principal for 33 years and Principal at Cathedral School for eight years. Terry and Ray have 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Jeff, Michelle, Brian, and Jennifer. Jeff is a medical research analyst in Minneapolis, Michelle works for Heifer International in Little Rock, Arkansas. Brian works for Zurick Insurance in the Chicago area and Jennifer, recently married, lives in Cooperstown, North Dakota.
Enough of the pleasantries….Now Mr. Dusek will finally get a chance to beat me….just not the way he was hoping for 30-plus years ago!!! The picks are below –
Game | Chris | Ray |
Hawley (1-1) at Crookston (1-1) | Hawley (Vetter or not….The Nuggets are the favorites for a reason) | Hawley |
UMC (0-2) at Bemidji State (2-0) | BSU (The alma mater is very good again and haven’t been kind to my first college I attended) |
BSU |
Polk County West (2-0) at Red Lake County (2-0) | Red Lake County (The decision was tough – Remick or Byklum so I flipped the peso and the guy on the coin looked like Coach Remick) |
PCW |
Kittson County Central (1-1) at Warren-A-O (0-2) | KCC | KCC |
Ada-Borup/NCW (2-1) at Fertile-Beltrami (2-0) | Ada-Borup/NCW (This was another 50/50) | AB/NCW |
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (0-2) at Thief River Falls (0-2) | DGF (They have had two tough opponents and TRF has been handled twice) | TRF |
Pequot Lakes (2-0) at Perham (1-1) | Perham (Will Beachy pass for 500 yards??) | Pequot Lakes |
Miami-Ohio (0-2) at Gophers (2-0) | Gophers (Are they for real? Not yet, but with 60 freshman and redshirt freshman the future is bright) | Gophers |
North Alabama (2-0) at NDSU (1-0) | NDSU (Never bet against the Bison at the Thunderdome – unless the lights go out) | NDSU |
UND (1-1) at Sam Houston State (1-0) | Sam Houston (UND is better this year, but SHS is tough) | Sam Houston |
Tie-breaker – Vikings (1-0) at Green Bay (1-0) | Green Bay (I like Aaron Rodgers (he is my favorite NFL player) and if he is on whatever pills they gave him last week, I like their chances – plus my scouting report (from Frankie McDonald – look him up…your welcome) on Cousins – he has a good game then a bad game.) | Vikings |

We have some exciting new from the UMC athletic department. The most exciting part of the news is that the University of Minnesota Crookston Athletic Department and Development Office is finalizing plans to put over $600,000 into Lysaker Gymnasium to redo the bleachers and bring them closer to the court and to put a video board in. The project will cost over $600,000 and I have heard from my “sources” that the UNIVERSITY, (the big poppa, the wizard behind the curtain that we always thought didn’t give a crap about Crookston) is giving the project $300,000 to help with the project. The Athletic Department/Development Office will have to raise the rest of the money. The reason why this is exciting news, is the fact the U of M is actually shelling out some cash to help UMC Athletics!!!! This gives me a little bit of hope that the main U and the regents maybe are seeing something needs to be done. I just hope it isn’t a band aid type of thinking.
They are still working on all the information for the fundraising campaign, but it is one that I might actually think about giving to, even after the U of M architects botched the design to limit our view out of the UMC baseball press box. Don’t get me started on the U of M architects from the Twin Cities!!!!
The other good news………
The Athletic Department and Development Office has announced a fundraising campaign to give the UMC Golf teams a practice facility, “locker room” with a golf simulator and they are starting a fundraising campaign to raise the $75,000 needed for the project.
BUILD A GOLF PRACTICE FACILITY
$75,000 to invest in leading-edge golf simulation technology, create an innovative space for Golden Eagle men’s and women’s golf teams, enhance team, alumni, and school pride, impact student athlete’s ability to develop skills and compete at their highest level. Support this project with a gift of any amount or one of the following options:
$500 to name a hole/pin on the putting green (only 6 holes available)
$1,000 to name a locker to be used by Golden Eagle Golf student athletes (not limited to one name per locker, however a gift of $2,000 will secure one name only)
$4,000 to name the swing analysis space
$5,000 to name the putting green space
$10,000 to name the hitting bay/golf simulator space
$25,000 to name the golf practice facility
Why this? Why now?
The time is now for the University of Minnesota Crookston to generate greater opportunities to be more competitive in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The NSIC is one of the premier conferences in NCAA Division II. It is a priority of our campus to move the needle by providing transformative places and spaces for the benefit of student-athletes, and create a point of pride for alumni, the campus, community, and region.
Give UMC a recruiting advantage over peer institutions (will be one of only three universities in the NSIC to have a leading indoor golf facility)
Provide space for two teams who do not currently have an adequate locker or practice facilities
Create a competitive edge for
Golden Eagle Golf teams
Ensure practice is possible for teams regardless of weather conditions

JOKES (Do you have any good jokes – email them to chrisjfee@yahoo.com and I will put them in the feever
LAST RIDE ON MY HARLEY
While riding my Harley, I swerved to avoid hitting a deer, lost control and landed in a ditch, severely banging my head.
Dazed and confused I crawled out of the ditch to the edge of the road when a shiny new convertible pulled up with a very beautiful woman who asked, “Are you okay?”
As I looked up, I noticed she was wearing a low cut blouse with cleavage to die for…
“I’m okay I think,” I replied as I pulled myself up to the side of the car to get a closer look.
She said, “Get in and I’ll take you home so I can clean and bandage that nasty scrape on your head.”
“That’s nice of you,” I answered, “but I don’t think my wife will like me doing that!”
“Oh, come now, I’m a nurse,” she insisted. “I need to see if you have any more scrapes and then treat them properly.”Well, she was really pretty and very persuasive. Being sort of shaken and weak, I agreed, but repeated, “I’m sure my wife won’t like this.”
We arrived at her place which was just few miles away and, after a couple of cold beers and the bandaging, I thanked her and said, “I feel a lot better but I know my wife is going to be really upset so I’d better go now.”
“Don’t be silly!” she said with a smile. “Stay for a while. She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?”
“Still in the ditch with the Harley, I guess.”
