SPORTS FEEVER – September 24, 2020

Welcome to another Sports Feever column.  If you ever have any sports info, jokes, or questions, send them to me at chrisjfee@yahoo.com.  Thanks for reading!

What a week!!!  We are close to wrapping up some fall sports, while we are getting ready for the two big fall sports football and volleyball!  The Minnesota State High School League overturned their August 4 decision and Activity Directors across the state are scrambling!

And how about those FIRST PLACE Minnesota Twins.  A couple of big wins has put the Twins back into first place by half a game.  The Twins have the second-best record and could be setting themselves up for a playoff run!

— — —

We found out on Wednesday that the Crookston Pirate Football team will play a few days earlier than anticipated.  The District has 17 teams so some teams would have to have a bye week and Crookston was one of the teams that will play a zero week game.
Crookston will host Roseau on Saturday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m. in the season opener and it will be one of the first high school football games in the state!  KROX will be Live Video streaming all of Crookston’s home football and volleyball games.  We have had some schools inquire about KROX video streaming their home games.  If you want information on what it would take for us to video stream your games, email me at chrisjfee@yahoo.com or call 218-281-1140.

We hope to have the full football schedule later on Thursday!  The Pirate Volleyball along with Junior High football and 9th/10th grade football schedules are later in the column.

The Minnesota State High School League met on Tuesday and decided to allow football and volleyball play this fall.  The board voted 15-3 for football and 14-4 for volleyball.  A big turn around from August.

Football
Practice will start September 28 with the first day of competition October 9 or 10.
The season will have six regular-season games with two weeks of section playoffs.  As of now, no state tournament.  Only 250 fans will be allowed at football games.

Volleyball
The 11 week season will allow two matches per week with a maximum of 14 matches. Practice will start September 28 and 10 practices will be required before competition. Masks are recommended for players and coaches with an exception for the six players on the court.
October 8 will be the first competition date.

NO fans will be allowed at the volleyball games.  KROX will be live video streaming all the Pirate home volleyball games.

Adapted Soccer
The board unanimously voted 17-0 to allow Adapted Soccer to conduct eight fall training sessions.  There are two divisions of Adapted Soccer, cognitively impaired and physically impaired.

So that is what happened this week.  A lot of happy student-athletes, coaches, and parents.

With Volleyball going into December and football going deep into November, we can pretty much guarantee that none of the winter sports will start on time and they won’t have a full season.

A big positive from football and volleyball being played in the fall is that the spring sports should have a full season.  After not having a season last year, they will have a full season and not have to worry about going into late June or early July!   A lot of wins after the move by the MSHSL.  Everybody should be happy that the kids are playing.  Sure Volleyball can’t have fans, but KROX will be Live Video streaming the Crookston home volleyball and football games!

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about one of the boys basketball coaches proposals for the upcoming season and 18 games seem to be the number they are hoping (30 percent reduction like all fall sports).

The Minnesota High School Boys Hockey coaches (who are always fighting for more games, especially in the metro) have come up with a 2 plan proposal –

Plan 1 (low COVID-19 numbers)
Plan 1 would allow teams to have one scrimmage and 24 regular-season games. Two games per week would be played on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays against the same opponent. Teams would play the same opponent in home-and-home series and teams could play 12 opponents from anywhere in the state.
Locker room use is limited and based on the Minnesota Department of Health social distancing guidelines.
There would be a limited number of spectators and spectators would be required to wear masks.
The section playoffs would be Feb. 15-27 and the state tournament would be March 2-6.

Plan 2 (mid-level COVID-19 numbers)
Plan 2 would allow teams to have one local scrimmage and 21 regular-season games. All of the games would be played against regional opponents and would start on Nov. 20, but limited to one game per week until Dec. 31. There would be a mandatory holiday break (Dec. 20-30) from competition. After Dec. 31, teams can play two games per week on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays against the same opponent.
The locker room use would be limited to 15 minutes prior to and after ice time. Masks would be required for players and coaches when not on the bench or on the ice and would be required when traveling as a team.
Players would not be allowed to play in both the junior varsity and varsity games.
There would be a limit to two spectators per player and spectators would be required to wear a mask.
The section playoffs would be Feb. 22-27 and the state tournament would be March 2-6.

Safety measures under both plans
-There are a number of items that are in both proposals by the MHCA.
-When they are not competing, players will wear a mask and will practice the Minnesota Department of Health social distance expectations.
-Coaches, staff and off-ice officials will wear face masks when indoors and teams are limited to two coaches on the bench.
-Coaches and players will be subject to temperature checks and screening upon arrival at the rink.
-At practices, teams would be expected to create consistent pods on the ice with a maximum of 25 people in each pod. Each rink would be allowed two pods on the ice at the same time with no mixing between groups and coaches and staff will wear masks.
-After games, there will be no post game handshakes, no team huddle or national anthem. -All of each team’s opponents will be from Minnesota or within 50 miles if the opponent is from out of state. Examples of acceptable opponents would be teams from Superior, Wis., Grand Forks or Fargo.
-Players will leave the ice for resurfacing halfway through the game.

JOKES

Mr. Johnson had been retired for a year when his wife of 50 years suggested they take a cruise: “We could go somewhere for a week, and make wild love like we did when we were young!” He thought it over and agreed.
He put on his hat and went down to the pharmacy, where he bought a bottle of seasick pills and a box of condoms. Upon returning home, his wife said, “I’ve been thinking. There’s no reason we can’t go for a month.” So Mr. Johnson went back to the pharmacy and asked for 4 bottles of seasick pills and a box of condoms. When he returned, his wife said, “You know, since the children are on their own, what’s stopping us from cruising the world?”

So back to the pharmacy Mr. Johnson went, and he brought 15 bottles of seasick pills and the same amount of condoms up to the counter. The pharmacist finally had to ask.
“You know, Mr. Johnson, you have been doing business with me for over 30years. I certainly don’t mean to pry, but if it makes you that sick, why the hell do you do it?”

How did the bishop make holy water?
He took some tap water and boiled the hell out of it.

— —

I was standing at the bar one night minding my own business.
This large ugly girl came up behind me, grabbed my behind and said, “You’re kinda cute. You gotta phone number?”
I said, “Yeah, you gotta pen?”
She said, “Yeah, I got a pen”.
I said, “You better get back in it before the farmer misses you.”

— —

I went to the drug store and told the clerk “Give me 3 packets of condoms, please.”
Lady Clerk: “Do you need a paper bag with that, sir?”
I said “Nah… She’s purty good lookin’…..”

— —

I was talking to a young woman in the VFW last night.
She said, “If you lost a few pounds, had a shave and got your hair cut, you’d look all right.”
I said, “If I did that, I’d be talking to your friends over there instead of you.”
Cost me a fat lip

— —

I was telling a woman in the Club about my ability to guess what day a woman was born just by feeling her breasts.
“Really” she said, “Go on then… Try.”
After about thirty seconds of fondling she began to lose patience and said, “Come on, what day was I born?”
I said, “Yesterday.”
Cost me a kick in the nuts, but…

— —

I went to our VFW last night and saw a BIG woman dancing on a table.
I said, “Good legs.”
The girl giggled and said, “Do you really think so?”
I said, “Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now.”
