SPORTS FEEVER – October 6, 2022

SPORTS FEEVER – Written by Chris Fee (chrisjfee@yahoo.com)

The New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge just hit the 62nd homerun of the season and if it wasn’t for the Minnesota Twins Luis Arraez, he would have secured the triple crown.   I am personally happy he got it because from all accounts the 30-year-old seems to be a great guy and has never been in any trouble, and he was a three-sport athlete in high school.  proving to these knuckleheads that play fall ball that you don’t have to if you want to be one of the best players EVER.  Here is Judge’s high school numbers.

We have posted the Crookston Pirate Winter Sports team’s schedules on our site.  Click on the link below to go to the page.  The schedules, of course, are likely to change more than once for several reasons, including winter storms.

CROOKSTON PIRATE WINTER SPORTS SCHEDULES

We have the latest Minnesota State High School fall sports polls with football, volleyball, soccer all updated.  Tennis hasn’t been updated for several weeks so we sent an email and will hopefully have something new on Thursday.

The Crookston Pirate Soccer teams are getting ready for the first round of the Section 8A tournament that starts on Tuesday at the high seed.

The seeding won’t be done until Sunday because there are games on Saturday.  Crookston is done playing, but the QRF will change before Sunday morning. With that said, we will take a look at what the match-ups COULD be.

Boys Section 8A North Subsection

As of Wednesday, the QRF standings looked like this –

  1. Fergus Falls 5-7-1 and a QRF of 42.8
  2. Hillcrest Academy 10-3-1 and a QRF of 42.0
  3. Pelican Rapids 2-11 and a QRF of 25.0
  4. Crookston 5-9  and a QRF of 22.8

The tie-breaker criteria order is listed below.
1. Head-to-head.  (Beginning this season the head-to-head tie-breaker will ALWAYS be applied regardless of the tie-breaker margin)
2. Conference winning percentage
3. Overall winning percentage
4. Section winning percentage (if at least 25% of the team’s games are against section opponents)
5. QRF points
6. Coin Flip

Fergus Falls beat Hillcrest 2-1 and lost 8-0 so a head-to-head split.  The teams don’t play in the same conference, so if it goes down to best Overall record, Hillcrest would get the top seed.
The second seed would be Fergus Falls because they beat Pelican Rapids 2-1.
The third seed would be Crookston because they beat Pelican Rapids 1-0 on September 13.

So Hillcrest would host Pelican Rapids and Fergus Falls would host Crookston.

That is the way I see it as of Wednesday night.

Girls Section 8A North Sub-section –

As of Wednesday, the QRF standings looked liked this –

  1. Fergus Falls 8-7 and a QRF of 42.3
  2. Hillcrest Academy 3–7-1 and a QRF of 24.4
  3. Crookston 4-8-3 and a QRF of 21.1
  4. Pelican Rapids 1-7-1  and a QRF of 15.5

5. QRF points
6. Coin Flip

Fergus Falls beat Hillcrest 8-0 and they play again on Thursday.  Pretty easy, if Fergus Falls wins Thursday, they are the top seed.  Actually, no matter what they will be the top seed.
The second seed is interesting because the way I figure it out, Crookston will be the second seed if Hillcrest Academy doesn’t beat Fergus Falls on Thursday.  So that would mean Crookston would host Hillcrest and Pelican Rapids would go to Fergus Falls to play the Otters.

That is the way I see it as of Wednesday night and things could and will probably change.  Stay tuned.

We will take a look at Section 8A Tennis next week, but the seeding should be self-explanatory with Staples-Motley getting number one and Crookston the second seed. Again, we will break it down next week.

The USA Clay Target League (USACTL) has teamed up with the U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health (USCAH), an arrangement that will provide athletes, parents, and coaches access to health, safety, and wellness education resources to support and optimize student athlete healthcare.

“The League’s priorities have always been safety, fun, marksmanship – in that order,” said USACTL president John Nelson. “We are happy to work with the USCAH to provide educational programs that support the health and well-being of League athletes, parents, and coaches across the county. They are highly-regarded and successful working with schools and national athletic associations such as ours”

The U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health believes that creating a culture that prioritizes athlete health and safety is the responsibility of everyone involved in athletics, not just healthcare personnel. Athletes, coaches, parents, administrators, and officials should all have at least a baseline understanding of health, safety, and welfare issues that are common in youth sports.

USCAH has created an online learning platform called ‘Athletics Healthspace’ that houses a growing library of courses that have been customized for youth sports and can completed via the website or mobile app.

“We are excited to partner with the USA Clay Target League to collaborate and enhance the health, safety, and well-being of their participants. We look forward to working together to prioritize health and safety.” said James R. Borchers, M.D. M.P.H., co-founder and president at USCAH.

About USCAH The U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health (USCAH) was founded upon the apparent need within athletic institutions for trusted independent partners with the experience and expertise to advise and consult with organizations regarding their healthcare delivery system. USCAH is committed to providing independent and unbiased medical expertise to organizations and individuals dedicated to the optimal health and safety of the athletes they serve. For more information, visit https://www.uscah.com.

About the USA Clay Target League With nearly 45,000 participating athletes in 2022, the non-profit USA Clay Target League is America’s largest clay target shooting organization. The League offers trap, skeet, sporting clays, and 5-stand leagues to secondary and postsecondary schools across the country.

The League the only 100% school-approved clay target shooting sport program in America. Every team must have school approval to participate. Most participating schools have lettering programs as well as yearbook inclusion for the teams. In addition, tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships are provided to qualifying seniors by the League and post-secondary institutions each year.

The League’s co-ed and adaptive nature are key attractions to schools nationwide: it’s fully Title IX compliant with both male and female athletes competing on the same team, and it’s an ‘adaptive’ sport, which allows students with physical disabilities to take part.

The League’s priorities are safety, fun, and marksmanship – in that order. The League is the safest sport in school, with no reported injuries since the inception of the League in 2001. Each athlete must complete firearm safety certification before participation.

JOKES

A 90-year-old man goes for a physical and all of his tests come back normal.

The doctor says, “Larry, everything looks great. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with God?”

Larry replies, “God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight, so He’s fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, poof! The light goes on. When I’m done, poof! The light goes off.”

“Wow, that’s incredible,” the doctor says.

A little later in the day, the doctor calls Larry’s wife.

“Bonnie,” he says, “Larry is doing fine! But I had to call you because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night, and poof, the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he’s done, poof, the light goes off?”

“Oh sweet Jesus”, exclaims Bonnie. “He’s peeing in the refrigerator again!”

A man drives his date up to lovers lane and parks. “I have to be honest with you” the woman says as the guy makes his move.”I`m a hooker”.

The man thinks about this for a bit and decides he`s ok with it. He agrees to pay her $25 and they go at it.

After they finish, the guy says,

“Now I should be honest too. I`m a cab driver and its going to cost you $25 to get back to town”.

A 90-year-old man said to his doctor, “I’ve never felt better. I have an 18-year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?”

The doctor considered his question for a minute and then said, “I have an elderly friend who is a hunter and never misses a season. One day when he was going out in a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his umbrella instead of his gun. When he got to the Creek, he saw a beaver sitting beside the stream. He raised his umbrella and went, ‘bang, bang’ and the beaver fell dead. What do you think of that?”

The 90-year-old said, “I’d say somebody else shot that beaver.”

The doctor replied, “My point exactly.”
