The first week of practice of Minnesota State High School League sports is a little over a week away and a lot of schools are having their parent meetings and captains practices and everything else. For most schools, they will start practice on Monday, August 13. We know of one team in the area, Mahnomen-Waubun, will have zero week and start practice on Monday! There are a few other teams that will start on Monday. —- There have been some changes for the District football schedules. Crookston is seemingly getting screwed in their schedule once again. I already think District scheduling is stupid and it shows the MSHSL has no clue and would rather keep the schools that treasure conferences over sections happy.
All the MSHSL had to do was have all the teams in a section play each other once and that would leave one game with a “rival” and the schedule is complete. In 2019, Crookston loses Staples-Motley (which is fine), but they replace the Cardinals with Pillager!!! The Minnesota State High School league is so worried about travel….they obviously don’t look at maps. Crookston also loses Pelican Rapids and Frazee and adds West Central Area and Ottertail Central. Both games added to the schedule will add travel costs to Crookston. Frazee and Pelican Rapids are moving to Class A, instead of AA so that is the main reason for the change.
Crookston and Thief River Falls both requested to play each other, but for some reason they weren’t scheduled to play each other for at least two more years. So two teams that are rivals in pretty much every sport, can’t play each other in football because the District football schedulers won’t let them. Instead, Crookston will play Pillager, West Central Area and Ottertail Central. Wow!!! I think the Pillager, WCA and OTC games will be pretty good competitive games most years, but it the three can’t be excited about having to come to Crookston each year. Heck, we don’t even have an Arby’s anymore after it closed last week. Crookston at Staples-Motley – 155 vs Crookston at Pillager – 171 miles Crookston at Frazee – 102 miles vs Crookston at OTC (Battle Lake) – 134 miles Crookston at Pelican Rapids – 101 miles vs Crookston at Barrett – 141 So Crookston will have to travel 78 more miles every two years. Not a big deal, but not instead of traveling an hour and a half to Frazee and Pelican Rapids, it is now two hours, a lot more than traveling 40 minutes to Thief River Falls to play another rival.

The Northwest Sub State Division II American Legion Baseball tournament The Stephen-Argyle American Legion Baseball team is advancing to the Division II state tournament this weekend in Pelican Rapids. Stephen-Argyle won the Northwest Sub-state tournament in Red Lake Falls last weekend when they beat Warroad in a winner take all by a 10-2 score. Stephen-Argyle has five super-seniors and they only have 10 players, but it is a perfect example of quality over quantity. Stephen-Argyle will take on Springfield at 10:00 AM on Friday morning and KROX will have the game on KROX Radio. You can hear the game on 1260AM/105.7FM, online at www.kroxam.com, on the KROX app, or on Alexa by saying – “Alexa, listen to KROX – Crookston.” If Stephen-Argyle wins, they will play at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday evening against the winner of New London and La Crescent. If Stephen-Argyle loses, they play the loser of the same two teams previously mentioned at 9:00 AM on Saturday. The four teams in the bottom of the bracket are Sauk Centre, Wadena, Le Seuer and the host Pelican Rapids. We will have all the Stephen-Argyle games on KROX. —-
The Birchmont Golf Tournament was held last week and Nick Bergan, a Crookston High School grad, finished runner-up in the Executive Championship. Championship flight – Area kids – Nate Deziel (EGF) lost to Andrew Israelson (Staples) 2 and 1 and lost to Tyler Hill (Virginia) in the consolation round Letter B flight- Brady Heppner (Crookston) lost to Keaton Gilbertson (Grand Forks) 4-3 and lost to Keaton Lausch (Fargo) 6-4 Executive Championship Flight – Nick Bergan (CHS grad and Defending champ) beat Michael Lossi (Whitefish Bay, Wis) 8-6, beat Derrick Johnson (Grand Forks) 2-1, beat Brad Anderson (Staples) 2-1 in semi-finals and lost to Joe Burgess (Woodbury) in the championship Junior Championship Flight- Trey Christopherson (Crookston) lost to Logan Hamak (Sartell) 2 up —-
The University of Minnesota Crookston has been busy offering scholarhips to soon to be seniors in high school Some names of interest are below – Jenson Beachy has received his first scholarship offer from UMC football. Josh Jeziorski has been offered a scholarship from UMC Men’s Basketball. Quintin Winterfeldt, a 6’5 guard/forward, who played at Fond du Lac last season but has transferred to Waupun, Wisconsin this coming school year, has been offered a scholarship from UMC. He was offered on Tuesday on a visit to campus. On Wednesday, he was at Bemidji State elite camp. Beachy will be tough for UMC to haul in, but possibly playing two sports (not sure if that is an option) might be attractive. Who knows, but Beachy has made the circuit at MSU-Moorhead, NDSU and many other camps. If he has a good senior season, he will be getting many offers. —-

The good news is they have some very good young talent and it will be a fun team to watch this fall with the possibility of playing some #1 ranked teams at home with Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State coming to town this fall! According to a Fargo Forum article and Associated Press story, Sanford is making a push for Augustana to move to NCAA Division 1 and join the Summit League! Multiple reports have said Sanford’s, Kelby Krabbenhoft, is behind the push. In Sioux Falls, if Sanford says jump, everybody that raises money responds with “how high.” It sounds like a decision will be made by Christmas and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out the chances are good for the Vikings to make the move. Reasons why they will – 1. Facilities are top notch and they wouldn’t have to change anything about any of them to make the move. Maybe add more seating at football, but there is plenty of room at their football only stadium. 2. Money – They have no problem raising money in the booming Sioux Falls metro area. They have major companies and a lot of people that are willing to donate and moving to D-1 would help the process of raising money. 3. Compete – They would be able to compete right away in pretty much every sport. 4. University of Sioux Falls – When USF joined the NSIC, Augie wasn’t happy with a second school in town joining the conference. There has been rumblings of the move since USF joined the conference. 5. Coaches – Augustana has D-1 caliber coaches and several have coached at the D-1 level. 6. AD – The new AD is from Michigan State. He knows D1 and similar to NDSU back in the day when they made the move, Augie made a hire with a move up in mind.
Reasons why Augie will stay – 1. They will be a top team in every sport, every year in the NSIC 2. Not sure of any others…..besides they don’t like change.
What will happen? Stay tuned. Things will be interesting if Augie moves up! —- Six of the 29 players on the final roster for Team USA Men’s Hockey in the 2019 World Juniors are Minnesotans. The Pacesetter Basketball Sweet 16 tournament will be held this Saturday and Sunday in St. Joseph. On the boys side, Perham is the only team from the area and they will play Hopkins in the first round. On the girls side, Pelican Rapids will be the only area team playing and they will take on Stillwater in the first round. —-
The Minnesota Vikings will host three separate high school football events during the 2018 season at Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center in collaboration with the individual schools, the Minnesota State High School League and the Vikings. The newly-constructed TCO Performance Center and TCO Stadium will be utilized to continue the club’s commitment to youth football programming to showcase and grow the game at the high school level. The facility will give high school players a unique opportunity to compete on the same fields as their NFL counterparts. The events will include a regular-season game on September 28 between Farmington and Eagan (home team), a regular-season game on October 12 between Lakeville North and Prior Lake (home team) and TCO will serve as an MSHSL Playoff host site for the state quarterfinals on November 9 and 10 for 3 games. “High school football is a unifying and long-standing tradition across our country,” Minnesota Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman said. “We are honored to host high school football games at our new TCO Performance Center facility. The lessons and values learned playing high school football extend well beyond the playing field. Here is a story about a kid named Clark Kent, a 10-year-old boy that beat Michael Phelps youth 100 meter butterfly record set in 1995. Seriously, his name is Clark Kent. Clark Kent may be Superman, but a 10-year-old boy who shares his name has the powers of Aquaman. At the Far West International Swimming Championship Sunday, Clark Kent Apuada placed first in all seven events he swam in. But in the 100 meter butterfly, he broke a record set by Olympian Michael Phelps at the same meet back in 1995. “Most people just call me Clark, but now, when I beat Michael Phelps’ record, they start calling me Superman,” he said. “I thought to myself yeah if I had positive thoughts, positive things would happen.” “It’s the coolest thing in the world because that’s all he talked about,” said Travis Rianda, Apuada’s swim coach. “It wasn’t like, ‘I want to be better than Michael Phelps,’ or anything like that. His first goals were, ‘I want to be a scientist, an Olympic gold medalist for the United States and I want to be a black belt.’ He’s on track for all three of those.” In addition to breaking Phelps’ record by 1.1 seconds, Apuada also won six other races at the meet. Technically, Apuada can’t qualify for the Olympics just yet, but the Olympics is his ultimate goal. Michael Phelps himself has already noticed his talent. Apuada has only been swimming competitively for four years, but with sky-high dreams and a name to match, he just may be a real-life superhero. —-
Villa St. Vincent’s Foundation is sponsoring its sixth Annual Glow Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 8 at the Minakwa Golf Course. The Crookston Pirate Booster Club is gearing up for its annual membership drive. PIRATE BOOSTERS exists to support Crookston High boys’ and girls’ athletic programs. The PIRATE BOOSTERS provide financial assistance which allows student athletes to obtain equipment, uniforms, warm-ups and facilities enhancements. Your annual investment will help the athletic needs of the Crookston High School student athletes. With your contribution of $100.00 or more, you will have your name placed on the PIRATE BOOSTERS sustaining membership board which is located in the CHS Commons. In addition, your name will be placed in all printed programs for CHS athletic events.
