The Stephen-Argyle Storm came out strong and dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball on their way to an impressive 47-0 victory over the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies in a game played in Argyle. Stephen-Argyle outgained Warren-Alvarado-Oslo 348 yards to 125 in the game.
FIRST QUARTER –
Stephen-Argyle’s first play of the game was a loss of four yards, but they responded in a big way as Zach McGlynn found Brandon Kroll for a 39-yard passing play to get into Pony territory. The Storm drive sputtered after that, and they turned the ball over on downs at the WAO 22 yard line. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo’s first drive looked good at the start, with two carries for 11 yards and a first down. The Ponies had a third and one play, but they lost four yards and were forced to punt. The snap to the punter was low, and the Pony punter barely got the punt off as it went straight up in the air for a total of four yards. Stephen-Argyle took advantage of the started their second drive at the Pony 44-yard line. They went 21 yards on two plays, including a 17 yard run by Collin McGregor. A few plays later, Jason Lindgren scored from eight yards out, and after the extra point kick, the Storm led 7-0 with 5:17 left in the quarter.
The Ponies were forced into a three-and-out on their next drive and had punt after gaining one yard on three plays. “I thought it was a pretty good effort defensively from our team,” Storm head coach Ethan Marquis said. “Especially toward the end. We had some young guys step up and make some nice plays, so that was really great to see.” Stephen-Argyle started the next drive, and James Pederson scampered 32 yards for a touchdown, and after the extra point kick, the Storm led 14-0. The Ponies had the ball back, and it started on a nine-yard gain, and after an incomplete pass, the Storm’s Jaden Kasprowicz forced a fumble to get the ball back. Three plays later, the Storm scored when McGlynn found Brandon Kroll for a five-yard pass for a touchdown for a 20-0 lead.
SECOND QUARTER –
In Stephen-Argyle’s first offensive possession of the second quarter, they were forced to punt, and a roughing the punter penalty was called on the Ponies for an automatic first down. While Stephen-Argyle didn’t score on the drive, they punted four plays later, and the ball was downed at the Pony five-yard line. The Ponies ran three plays and were forced to punt. The punt went 20 yards, and the Storm had another short field with the ball at Pony 30 yard line. It only took a few plays for the Storm to score again as Jason Lindgren had a nice 12 yard run for a touchdown, and after he ran the two-point conversion into the endzone, Stephen-Argyle led 28-0. The Storm would get the ball back, and they fumbled the ball, and the Ponies’ Kirby Kilen jumped on the ball. The Ponies turned the ball over on the next play when Stephen-Argyle’s Collin McGregor made a tremendous diving catch for an interception with 4:12 left in the half. “We wish we would have done a few things differently in the first half,” Warren-Alvarado-Oslo assistant coach Ben Miska said. “Football is a simple game. You block, you tackle, and you win the game upfront. Stephen-Argyle outplayed us upfront on both sides of the ball. If we can get a drive that’s sustained and move the ball a little more successfully than we did tonight, that’s a big step. We have to control the ball a little better than we did tonight and cut down the turnovers.” It only took the Storm two plays as Jason Lindgren broke off a 57 yard run for a touchdown, and after the extra point kick, they led 35-0 going into halftime. “We got (the Ponies) out of their five-man front on defense, which they like a lot,” Marquis said. “It felt good to pass the ball a little, too. I thought the guys settled in a little bit. So, it was a nice night overall.”
THIRD QUARTER –
Warren-Alvarado-Oslo started the second half with the ball and had a three-and-out. Stephen-Argyle ran two plays for 12 yards and a first down before Jason Lindgren broke a 24 yard run down to the Pony seven-yard line. The Storm scored on the next play when McGlynn found Colton Pagnac for a seven-yard pass, and after the extra point kick failed, they led 41-0.
The Ponies seemed to have a decent drive going when they started moving the ball, but on the fifth play of the drive, Stephen-Argyle’s James Pederson intercepted a pass at the Storm 34-yard line. Stephen-Argyle covered 20 yards on three plays when a personal foul penalty was called, adding 15 more yards. Five plays later, the Storm struck again when McGlynn found Brandon Kroll for a three-yard pass for a touchdown for a 47-0 lead with 3:31 left in the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER-
The fourth quarter moved along at a fast pace with the mercy rule in effect as Stephen-Argyle led by more than 35 points. As the clock ran the entire quarter, both teams were able to get the second string in for most of the quarter, and while neither team scored, Stephen-Argyle continued their defensive dominance and held on for a 47-0 victory. “This was a real good win for us over a rival team,” Coach Marquis said. “It’s one that we should enjoy, but we need to start moving forward here and getting ready for a tough stretch ahead.”
Stephen-Argyle improves to 2-0 on the year. The Storm had a schedule change and will host Badger-Greenbush-Middle River on Saturday, October 24, at 1:30 p.m. for homecoming. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo drops to 0-1.
