TRF VOLLEYBALL ENDS CROOKSTON’S SEASON WITH IMPRESSIVE SWEEP

The Thief River Falls Prowler Volleyball team had a bit of a speed bump towards the end of the season and missed some players, but had them all back for the first round of the playoffs and dominated all aspects of the game as they cruised to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-7) victory over the Crookston Pirates in the first round of the Section 8AA playoffs in a match that took less than an hour.

SET ONE –
Thief River Falls took a 3-1 lead with three kills from Mattea Erickson. “We talked about her before the match,” said Crookston Coach Katie Englestad. “She is a great player, she is a lefty and is tough to stop.” Crookston battled back to get within a 6-5 deficit only to have Thief River Falls go on a 7-1 run with four different players picking up kills.  Crookston was forced to call a timeout and responded with three straight points with a TRF error, a Salentine kill, and an All Perreault kill to get within a 13-9 deficit.  Crookston was outscored 12-2 the rest of the way and lost 25-11 in the first set.  “We couldn’t get things rolling,” said Coach Englestad. “It was disappointing to start that way.”

SET TWO –
Crookston had a great start to the second set with a 5-1 run behind a couple of Thief River Falls errors, a Mallorie Sundeen block to get the Pirates out to the early lead.  The Prowlers answered with four straight points to tie the set at 5, then 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 14.  Thief River Falls’ Mattea Erickson responded with four straight kills and after a Sundeen Kill, the Prowlers added a kill from Brylee Lingen and another kill from Aliyah Abby for a 19-16 lead.  Thief River Falls finished with a 25-20 victory for a 2-0 lead. “The girls showed that they were here to play in the second set,” said Coach Englestad. “We had some good touches and good blocks and were working hard and making some nice plays in the set, but Thief River Falls is a very good front row team.”

SET THREE –
In the third set, Thief River Falls put their stamp on the set with a 9-0 run behind three Erickson kills, two Carlie Rogalla aces, a Josie Johnson kill, and a few Crookston errors.  “That was a tough start and not the way we wanted to start, that is for sure,” said Coach Englestad. Crookston finally got on the board when Samantha Sanders had a kill and after a TRF point, Sanders followed with another kill and they trailed 9-3.  The rest of the match belonged to Thief River Falls as they ended the set on a 16-4 run to end the set and match.

Crookston ends the season with a record of 4-16 and say goodbye to the following seniors – Rylee Solheim, Breanna Kressin, Bailey Cameron, Samantha Sanders, Hannah Loraas, Brianna Kelly, Jasmine Bushard, Ally Perreault, and Mallorie Sundeen.  “We lose a lot of good seniors and they should hold their head high on the way they represented themselves,” said Coach Englestad. “We had a lot of seniors step up tonight and that was nice to see.”
Thief River Falls improves to 12-11 on the year and will host Roseau on Friday in the second round of the Section 8AA tournament.
