The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team struggled to make their shots in the second half and the Wayne State Wildcats pulled away for a 67-52 victory in a Northern Sun Conference game at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston.
FIRST QUARTER –
After Wayne State scored a basket on their first possession, UMC’s Lily Orazem (Jr. Onamia) made a three-pointer and was followed by a basket from Janie Tormanen (Soph. Menahga) for a 5-2 lead. The game was tied at 5 and 7 before UMC built a 16-9 lead behind three points from Hope Dudycha (Soph. Austin) and two points apiece from Tormanen, Emma Miller (Soph. St. Michael), and Riley Jenkins (Fresh Galesburg IL). Wayne State took over the final minutes of the quarter as they finished on a 10-3 run to get within a 19-16 deficit.
SECOND QUARTER –
Wayne State continued the momentum from the end of the first quarter by scoring the first six points of the quarter for a 22-19 lead. UMC stopped the run with a Nicole Hernandez (Jr. Oak Creek, Wis) three pointer to tie the game at 22. After a Wayne State basket, Rayna Klejeski (Fresh. Barnum) buried a three-pointer for a 25-24 lead. The game was tied at 30 when Wayne State made a basket and UMC responded with an Ainsley McLain (Fresh. Grafton) three-pointer for a 33-32 lead with over a minunt left in the half. Wayne State scored the last basket of the half and took a 34-33 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER –
Wayne State’s Brooklyn Kruse scored the first four points of the quarter for a 38-33 lead. UMC’s Miller stopped the run with two free throws and after two more Kruse points, Miller scored four straight points to get the Golden Eagles within a 40-39 deficet. UMC trailed 46-43 when Wayne State ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 53-43 into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER –
Wayne State led 56-45 when they went on a 9-0 run to take a 65-45 lead, their biggest lead of the game. UMC tried to chip away at the deficit in the final minutes with five points from Natalie Mikrot (Soph. Willow River), but Wayne State held on for a 67-52 victory.
UMC only made 18 of 60 shots for 30 percent, while Wayne State made 29 of 63 shots for 46 percent.
UMC drops their 11th game in a row and is now 9-17 overall and 6-14 in the NSIC. UMC will wrap up the regular season at Minnesota State Mankato on Friday and Winona State on Saturday. Wayne State improves to 6-17 overall and 3-17 in the NSIC.
