NORTH DAKOTA STATE’S STRONG SECOND HALF DOWNS UMC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 88-51

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Women’s Basketball team dropped their final exhibition game before the start of the regular season 88-51 against North Dakota State at the Scheels Center in Fargo, ND.

FIRST QUARTER –
North Dakota State opened the game with back to back lay-ups to take a 4-0 lead. Minnesota Crookston’s first points came on two free-throws by Paige Cornale (Soph., Oak Creek, WI) trimming the Golden Eagles deficit down to 4-2 with 8:32 to play in the quarter. Trailing 12-8, Julia Peplinski (Soph., Hustisford, WI) scored a lay-up bringing Minnesota Crookston back within two. NDSU ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 20-12 lead after one-quarter of play.

SECOND QUARTER –
North Dakota State opened the second quarter with an Emily Dietz (Jr., West Fargo, ND) lay-up to take a 22-12 lead. UMC responded with Paige Cornale converting back-to-back drives to the rim into four points followed by an Emma Carpenter (Fr., Eagan) three-pointer cutting the Bison lead down to 22-19. Minnesota Crookston pulled within 24-23 after two free-throws by Paige Cornale, but North Dakota State ended the quarter with two straight baskets taking a 39-33 lead into halftime. “It really started to turn in those last two possesions of the first half,” noted UMC head coach Mike Roysland. “We gave up four points in the last 30 seconds there and that really hurt us. I thought we were doing some things ok, but we just didn’t stay consistent enough. We had some really good attacks. We were making some shots and were getting some looks at some different things. We’ve got a lot of youth out there, so this is a lot of new touches.”

THIRD QUARTER –
North Dakota State opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a 47-33 lead before Mary Burke (R-Fr., Virginia) made a short jump shot from the paint. The Bison used another 9-point run to gain a 56-37 lead. North Dakota State continued to pull ahead in the third quarter limiting Minnesota Crookston to just 10 points and taking a 62-43 lead into the final quarter.  “Our youth kind of got exposed a little bit tonight,” said Roysland. “We had a couple of miscues on guards not communicating, but our upperclassmen need to be better. (NDSU) were just completely in control. We got exposed. It was a player making a mistake one trip and a different player on the next trip. We did a better job covering up the paint, and it opened up some threes for them.”

FOURTH QUARTER –
Kylie Post (Soph., Corcoran) scored a lay-up for the first points of the fourth quarter bringing Minnesota Crookston within 62-45. That proved to be the extent of the Golden Eagles comeback bid. The Bison scored six unanswered to pull in front by 23 and continued to surge offensively. Minnesota Crookston failed to make a field goal in the final 4:49 of the game as NDSU closed out an 88-51 win. “It just got away from us,” summarized Roysland. “Especially in the second half. It’s always easier to build off playing well, rather than playing poorly. This will really be a good learning tool, and these kids have the right attitude. We’ll learn from this. These kids will bounce back, and we’ll be ready come next weekend.”

Minnesota Crookston opens the regular season on Friday, November 8 against Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney at 7:00 P.M.
