Minnesota State used a 15-0 run in the second quarter before cruising the rest of the game in an 89-68 win over Minnesota Crookston Women’s basketball in an NSIC game played at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minnesota.
1st Quarter –
Minnesota State opened the scoring with a lay-up through a foul tacking on a free-throw for the opening three points. Kylie Post (Soph., Corcoran) answered with a jump shot bringing the Golden Eagles within one. Mattea Vetsch (Fr., Devils Lake, ND) made a three-pointer tying the game at 5-5 with 8:04 to play in the first quarter. Minnesota Crookston took its first lead with a three-pointer from Mary Burke (R-Fr., Virginia), putting UMC in front 10-9 with 6:11 to play in the opening frame. Minnesota State pulled in front 17-12, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 4-0 run to pull within 17-16. The Mavericks countered with a triple to end the quarter with a 20-16 lead.
2nd Quarter –
Bren Fox (Soph., Norwood Young America) made a pair of free-throws with 7:38 to play in the first half trimming Minnesota Crookston’s deficit down to 25-23. Minnesota State went on a 15-0 run over three minutes, increasing their advantage to 40-23 with 4:15 left in the second quarter. The Mavericks added a 10-4 run to end the first half taking a 50-30 lead into halftime.
3rd Quarter –
The teams started the second half trading baskets during the first four minutes of the half with Minnesota State’s lead 61-39 with 6:04 to play in the third quarter. MSU used a 6-0 run taking a 67-41 lead with 3:31 to play. The Mavericks closed the quarter on a 5-2 run, entering the fourth quarter leading 72-45.
4th Quarter –
Abby Guidiner (Jr., Waukesha, WI) made a three-pointer early in the final quarter, which was answered quickly by Minnesota State. The Mavericks continued to separate the rest of the game as the hosts closed out an 89-68 win.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-17 overall and 3-14 in conference play. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday when UMC travels to Concordia-St. Paul for a 3:30 P.M. tipoff. Minnesota State improves to 12-9 overall and 9-8 in the NSIC.
