The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Women’s Basketball team turned the ball over too many times, and the University of Mary Marauders took advantage and held on for an 87-68 victory in a Northern Sun Conference game played at Lysaker Gymnasium on Gary Senske Court in Crookston.
FIRST QUARTER
Mary had a great start to the game, going on an 11-2 run in the first three minutes. UMC stopped the run with an Anna Westby (Fresh. Evelth) basket, and Rayna Klejeski (Jr. Barnum) added a free throw. After a Mary basket, UMC answered with a Klejeski basket and two Emma Miller (Sr. Albertville) free throws to bring the Golden Eagles within a 13-9 deficit halfway through the quarter. Mary scored five straight points before UMC answered with a Riley Jenkins (Jr. Galesburg, IL) three-pointer, and five points from Miller to get within an 18-17 deficit with 1:43 left. Mary outscored UMC 5-3 in the final minutes and took a 23-20 lead into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER –
UMC started the second quarter with a Hope Dudycha (Jr. Austin) three-pointer. After a Mary basket, UMC’s Miller made a three-pointer and the Golden Eagles took a 26-25 lead with 9:06 left in the half. Mary answered in a big way as they went on an 11-0 run to take a 36-26 lead halfway through the quarter. After a Klejeski basket, Mary ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 46-30 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER –
The teams exchanged baskets for the first two minutes until Mary scored back-to-back layups for a 54-34 lead with 7:33 left in the quarter. UMC countered with baskets by Klejeski and Miller. The back-and-forth continued as Mary responded with four points in the paint to regain a 20-point lead. Halfway through the quarter, UMC’s Miller made two free throws, and the teams continued to exchange baskets the rest of the quarter as the Marauders took a 65-48 lead going into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER –
Mary outscored UMC 5-2 to start the quarter before the Golden Eagles scored eight straight points behind five points from Miller and a three-pointer from Westby to get within a 70-58 deficit halfway through the quarter. Mary countered with an 11-2 run to take an 81-60 lead with three minutes remaining. Mary held on the rest of the way for an 87-68 victory.
UMC drops to 8-18 overall and 7-13 in the NSIC and will host Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday. Mary improves to 21-8 on the year and 14-6 in the NSIC.
