UNITED WAY SUPPORTS VILLA ST. VINCENT’S FALL PREVENTION PROGRAM

Villa St. Vincent was the proud recipient of a $2,500 gift recently for the United Way of Crookston for their Fall Prevention Program.

Director of Nursing Wangen said the falls are the leading cause of injury in people 65 years and older nationwide.  “At the Villa, we have an ambitious walking and wellness programming to help keep people strong and avert falls,” said Wangen.  “We try to be creative as we seek individualized safety approaches to honor resident-centered care.  This grant will bring more to our ‘toolbox’ in the Skilled Nursing Area, Short Term Care Rehab, and our Memory Care Unit.”

With the grant, the Villa purchased motion detectors, therapeutic blankets, and activity/sensory tools according to Activities Director Karen Swatlowski who added the favorite addition is probably the Villa’s animated pets.  “We have some that ‘breath’ as they lay on a lap and sleep, and others that will purr or softly bark to respond to a voice,” said Swatlowski.  “They are so life-life and fun.  It warms the heart to watch our seniors respond and care for the dog or cat in their lap.  We are eternally grateful for the support of the United Way.  The United Way makes our community stronger.”
