The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Baseball team is ranked for the first time in program history (in the D-2 era).  UMC is off to a 13-1 start and has been playing some great baseball.
UMC will be hosting Concordia-St. Paul in two double-headers on Saturday (starting at 1:00 p.m.) and Sunday at Noon.
The Golden Eagles have been outstanding on the offensive end.  The pitching has been good enough at times and lights out other times.

If you are looking to watch some great baseball and watch a team that plays the game the right way, head out to UMC to watch the games this weekend.  If you like baseball, you will enjoy it.

We have a few more local tie-ins to pass along.

Crookston resident and former Thief River Falls High School Principal and Boys Basketball coach Tom Hunt played basketball for Gonzaga back in the day.  He played on the Freshman team in the 1968-69 year and played varsity in the 1969-70, 70-71, 71-72 seasons.  He averaged almost 10 points per game in his three years and over two rebounds and two assists per game.
Tom is married to Carol (Reitmeier), and they have two children, Carl and Katie (Fee).  They have two grandchildren (who also happen to be my niece and nephew) in Crookston with Addie Fee (8th grader) and Kelby Fee (2nd grader), and they both play hockey!!  (Tom is #14 in the picture below)

Brody Lamb of the Dodge County Wildcats is Shawn and Suzie Rezac’s nephew and cousin to Sophia and Samantha Rezac. Dodge County got a gift in the first round when the Class A state tournament favorite, Hermantown, had to quarantine all but three of their players for the first round, and they were forced to play their J.V. team.  Dodge County beat Hermantown, finished the game strong in the semi-finals to beat Little Falls, and got beat by Gentry Academy in the state championship.
Lamb committed to the University of Minnesota, and the Gophers coaches want him to get a year of juniors under his belt before coming to the U.
Brody’s dad Jeff Lamb, a 1982 Rochester Mayo grad, played for the Austin Mavericks of the USHL before playing at the University of Denver.

Stephen High School graduate Craig Smith has left Utah State to take the head coaching job of the Utah Men’s Basketball team.

Smith graduated from Stephen High School and then graduated from UND in 1996 and got his master’s degree from Northern State in 1999.

Smith started his head coaching career at Mayville state (where he started as an assistant for Tim Miles – who is now the head coach at San Jose State) from 2004 to 2007.  He then took assistant coaching jobs under Miles at Colorado State and Nebraska from 2007 through 2014.
In 2014, Smith became the head coach of South Dakota until 2018 when he took the head job at Utah State until this season.  Now Smith was hired as the head Utah Utes coach on March 27.

This local tie-in is a little bit of a stretch, but my family has become South Dakota volleyball fans over the past two years.   My daughter Alyssa’s boyfriend (Paul Juhnke) has a sister (Elizabeth Juhnke – a sophomore from Lakeville) on the University of South Dakota Coyote Women’s Volleyball team that just won the Summit League championship with a 3-2 victory over Denver on Saturday.  Four of the five sets were decided by two points and the fifth set was 19-17.  Elizabeth had 23 kills in the match to lead the team.
Now South Dakota will play #25 ranked Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship on Wednesday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN 3.  If they win that match they would play Ohio State (#9 seed) on Thursday at 11:00 a.m.

JOKES

A man calls home to his wife and says, “Honey I have been asked to go fishing at a big lake up in Canada with my boss and several of his friends. We’ll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve been wanting, so would you please pack me enough clothes for a week and set out my rod and tackle box. We’re leaving from the office and I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! And please pack my new blue silk pajamas.”

The wife thinks this sounds a little fishy but being a good wife she does exactly what her husband asked. The following weekend he comes home a little tired but otherwise looking good.

The wife welcomes him home and asks if he caught many fish. He says, “Yes! Lots of Walleye, some Bluegill, and a few Pike. But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?”

The wife replies; “I did, they were in your tackle box.”

I went to the shop the other day. I was only in there for about 5 minutes and when I came out, there was a traffic officer writing a parking ticket for over-running the meter.
So I went up to him and said, “Come on, how about giving a man a break?”
He ignored me and continued writing the ticket.
So I called him a pencil-necked Nazi. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for also having parked partially on the pavement!!
So I called him a pig. He finished the second ticket and put it on the car with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket!!
This went on for about 20 minutes and the more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn’t care.
My car was parked around the corner…
