The Crookston Pirate Girl’s tennis team opened up the season with one win and two losses at the Park Rapids Invitational on Friday. Crookston was short-handed with three of their starters not able to make the trip, but it gave the chance for a young Crookston team a chance to get three matches against quality opponents under their belt. “The girls competed hard and we had great weather. Only have one outdoor practice in so far this season we are working on our consistency and stamina,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “We were missing three girls and it was nice to see some of the younger girls fill in the spots.”
Crookston lost to Minnewaska area 5-2 in the opening match, lost to Mound Westonka 6-1 and beat Aitkin 4-3. Every match started with the score tied at 2-2 to get the matches completed in a timely manner.
CROOKSTON VS MINNEWASKA AREA
Crookston lost to Minnewaska Area in the first match of the day 5-2 and had wins at second singles from Catherine Tiedemann and four singles with Halle Winjum. Tiedemann won her match in a third set tie-breaker (3-6, 6-4, 10-4) for one of the wins. Halle Winjum won her match 6-2, 6-3. “Halle and Catherine played some pretty good tennis,” said Coach Brekken. “They competed hard and it was nice to see Catherine come back after losing the first set and winning the next two. Halle came out strong and looked good in the first match and that was nice to see.”

CROOKSTON VS MOUND-WESTONKA
Crookston lost to a solid Class AA team Mound-Westonka 6-1. The lone Pirate win came at second doubles with Halle Bruggeman and Audrey Harboot winning 6-2, 6-3. “Halle and Audrey really played well. They had a strong match and dominated their match,” said Coach Brekken. “They didn’t give up a game in the first set (scores started at 2-2) and really played well together and that was nice to see from a freshman and a senior.” Even though Crookston only had one win, Coach Brekken was happy with how well his team played. “The girls played hard and competed and that was nice to see,” said Brekken. “We lost two of the matches in three sets and lost a close doubles match so the score could have been a little different, but Mound-Westonka is a solid team and it was a good match.”

CROOKSTON VS AITKIN
Crookston picked up their first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over the Aitkin Gobblers. Catherine Tiedeman and Hannah Lindemoen won their singles matches and doubles teams of Hayden Winjum/Emma Osborn and Halle Winjum/Emma Gunderson won their matches. “It was nice to have a balanced attack with two wins coming from singles and two more in doubles,” said Coach Brekken. “Hannah (Lindemoen) played well and had a nice win at third singles in a three-set match. She hit the ball well today.” With the Pirates getting their first matches of the season under their belts Coach Brekken said they have some things to work on. “We have a lot of the things to work on, but that is expected after the first matches,” said Brekken. “We need to work on conditioning and consistency and that stuck out the most. The girls played well and it is a good place to start the season.”
Crookston is now 1-2 on the year.
