BAGLEY-FOSSTON BOY’S HOCKEY WINS OT THRILLER OVER CROOKSTON

The Crookston and Bagley-Fosston Boy’s Hockey teams played one of the most exciting games all season at the Crookston Sports Center on Tuesday night. There were multiple lead changes, and ties that resulted in overtime, where Bagley-Fosston would win the game 6-5 edging out the Pirates for a Section 8A victory.

FIRST PERIOD –
It was an action-filled first period as the two teams combined for five goals. Crookston got the scoring started at the 4:13 mark on a shot from the point from Ty Larson making it 1-0. It was Larson’s first goal of the season. Bagley-Fosston quickly countered scoring two goals in the span of 1:30 to take a 2-1 lead. Both goals came on excellent plays from the Flyers who started to click offensively. The two teams played fairly even for the next several minutes before the Flyers would get a chance on the Power Play after Michael Bochow was called for a trip. Bagley-Fosston would capitalize on the man advantage taking a 3-1 lead with 4:41 left in the frame. It looked as if that would end the scoring for the first period, but the Pirates would get a late Power Play. Senior Jack Doda would skate all the way down the ice, weave his way through the defense, and fire a wrist shot past the Bagley-Fosston goaltender to pull the Pirates within one goal at 3-2. The goal came with just time to spare with one second remaining in the period. That gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. Crookston outshot Bagley-Fosston 11-10 in the first period.

SECOND PERIOD –
Once again, five goals would be scored in the second period. Crookston would score the first one as Carter Trudeau would make a heads-up play. Trudeau would get the puck near the side of the net and fire a shot off the back of the Flyers goaltender who was out of the crease, and the puck would trickle into the net tying the game at 3-3. It was the 7th goal of the season for Trudeau. The Pirates would then be given their second Power Play of the night and once again score for the second time with the man advantage. The puck would be jammed near the side of the net, and Ryan Street would end up cleaning up the play for the Pirates shoving the puck into the back of the net to give Crookston the lead back at 4-3 with 10:49 remaining in the frame. It was a back-and-forth game all night with each team having spirts of momentum. The Flyers would get their offense going with back-t0-back goals from Conner Nelson and Gage Gunderson to take the lead back at 5-4. The Pirates still weren’t finished and would get another goal from Carter Trudeau with 2:11 remaining in the frame to tie the game once again at 5-5. Assisting on the goal were Jack Doda and Ryan Street. That would end the wild second period leaving the game tied heading into the final seventeen minutes of play.

THIRD PERIOD –
After two periods filled with scoring the goaltenders stepped up in the final frame. Each team had several chances throughout the third period, but both Jaren Bailey of Crookston and Kassandra Fontaine of Bagley-Fosston time and time again made the saves necessary to keep the game at 5-5. Crookston would get two Power Play opportunities in the final seven minutes of the period, but unlike their first two chances of the game, they would be stopped both times, and the Flyers would force overtime thanks to solid defensive play. The Pirates outshot the Flyers 19-9 in the third period but couldn’t quite sneak one by to win the game.

OVERTIME –
Each team had a couple of chances in the overtime frame before the Flyers would finally end the game. Markus Olson would take a pass from the Flyers goaltender Kassandra Fontaine, skate the full length of the ice, get to his backhand and shove a shot past Bailey stick side to win the game for Bagley-Fosston 5:38 into the overtime. Crookston didn’t officially register a shot in the overtime period while the Flyers had three. Suffering the loss for the Pirates was Jaren Bailey making 24 saves while surrendering six goals. Picking up the win for the Flyers was Kassandra Fontaine who allowed 5 goals while making 40 saves.

Crookston falls to 2-10 and will travel to play the #1 team in Class A, the Warroad Warriors on Thursday night.  Bagley-Fosston improves to 9-4 with the win.
