The Badger/Greenbush-Middle River (BGMR) Gators used suffocating defense, tremendous passing. They dominated in the rebounding department as they ended the first half on a 40-7 run and cruised to a 74-38 victory over the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team in a game played in Greenbush. When asked what Coach Kent Christian wanted his team to improve before the game, he responded, “Our defense…… it sucks.” The Gators must have heard the coach and played their best defensive game of the year.
FIRST HALF –
Crookston had an excellent start with ties at 2 and 4 with baskets from Jack Garmen and Tanner Giese. BGMR made a basket before Haden Michaelson buried a three-pointer for a 7-6 lead four minutes into the game. “We should have gone for one shot at the point, huh,” jokingly said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “We had a good start, but that was about it.” Unfortunately for the Pirates, BGMR dominated every facet of the game in the final 14 minutes of the half while taking advantage of Pirate foul troubles. “We had Jaccob Hesby in foul trouble and Tanner Giese in foul trouble, and that hurt,” said Coach Garmen. They started on a 15-0 run until Isaac Thomforde made two free throws, but BGMR continued to dominate and ended the final 14 minutes on the half by going on a 40-7 run to take a 46-14 lead at halftime. “They dominated us inside, and it was almost like they were playing power football, and we couldn’t stop them as they were scoring at will,”
SECOND HALF –
BGMR scored most of their first-half points in the paint while only making two three-pointers, but it was a different story as they made six three-pointers and continued to build on their lead, and halfway through the half, they had a 69-30 lead which forced running time for the rest of the game. One highlight in the second half came with seven minutes left in the game as BGMR’s Kobey Dallager scored the 1,000th point of his career with a jump shot in the paint, and a time out was called as he went to hug family and friends in the stands. Shortly after the milestone, the Gators went to the bench and held on for an 80-38 victory. “They have a nice inside/outside game that we couldn’t match up with,” said Coach Garmen. “They played outstanding defense and it didn’t help that we couldn’t slow down and seemed to be going to fast and part of that was the Gator defense too.”
Crookston drops to 2-10 on the year and will host the Red Lake County Rebels on Friday, a game you can watch on the KROX live stream. Badger-Greenbush-Middle River improves to 6-8 on the year.
