The Grand Theatre will be showing a free Christmas movie at 10:00 a.m. today. 

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s Fellowship Committee is hosting a bus trip to attend the annual Concordia Christmas Concert today at 2:00 p.m. The bus will board at the church parking lot at 11 A.M. and depart at 11:30 A.M. for the concert, followed by a stop at the Frying Pan in Moorhead for dinner on the way home. The bus ride is FREE and tickets for the concert can be purchased at the GROUP RATE of $15. Please make your check out to ST. PAUL’S FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE.  They are collecting for the ticket(s) at the church office when you sign up. Tickets will be handed out as we board the bus. Santaland will be held today from noon to 3:00 p.m. in the Sargeant Student Center at UMC.   Student clubs and organizations will host crafts, prizes, and holiday fun activities for all Crookston Elementary students along with the opportunity for festive photos with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their elves.  The event is free and no parking permits are required. Cookies and hot chocolate will be provided. Sponsored by the Crookston Student Association. 

The Crookston Eagles will have bar bingo today at 3:30 p.m., $400 must go and the Altru Holiday Party at 7:00 p.m. 

Trinity Lutheran Church of Crookston is sponsoring the Stable Program at the University of Minnesota, Crookston at the University Outreach and Teaching Center tonight at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m.  This one-hour program will include singers, instrumentalists, and a bell choir, along with favorite Christmas carols sung by the audience. All are invited and there is no admission charge, although a free-donation is accepted which is used to help defray expenses and provide some funds for this event next year.  Hot cider is served at the end of the program. 

The Villa St. Vincent Auxiliary invites you to take part in the “Light Up A Life” Tree.  A $5 gift will light a bulb on the tree in memory or in honor of someone special. The tree lighting ceremony and reading of all the names will be on Sunday, December 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the Villa St. Vincent Wellness/Activity Room. After the ceremony there will be coffee and cookies.  All are invited to attend. 

The Crookston High School Choir and Orchestra Departments present the 20th Annual “Classic Noel!” will be Sunday, December 8.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner served at 6:00 p.m., concert at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the evening are $20. The menu will include Prime Rib, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Starter Salad with Bread Roll, and Ice Cream Dessert.  Catered by Drafts Sports Bar & Grill. Tickets are available from the CHS Music students, at the CHS Officer, Montague’s Flower and Crookston Floral. Tickets for the concert only are $4/adult, $3/student, and are available at the door. 

Red Lake Falls Civic and Commerce will host its 3rd Annual Holly Dazzle event in Red Lake Falls on Sunday, December 8, from 5-8. There’ll be  music and bonfires at the Memorial park Gazebo from 5-5:30. From 5:30-6, they will light their 50 foot long train, town tree, grazing deer, and the  newest creation, a large Gingerbread House, by Framed Lighting Inc. From 6-8, there will be a Free Will supper catered by Driftwood Grill at the Red Lake Falls Legion along with Santa, local singers, a raffle and grand prize drawing. The event is free and open to the public, with all donations going towards additional light fixtures for next year. 

Toys for Tots is a charity sponsored by the employees of the City of Crookston for needy children in the city.  Cash donations are greatly appreciated and preferred which allows the volunteers to purchase age and gender-specific gifts for each child.  Books, toys and gift wrap donations have also been received. Donations can be sent or brought to the Water Department during business hours at 124 North Broadway.

The Crookston Public Library has a Harry Potter Escape Room planned from Monday, December 9 with two sessions.  Session 1: 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. Session 2: 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. Find the clues and solve the codes to escape Azkaban. For teens and adults. Limited to 8 spots per session.  Please sign up by calling the library. 

The Crookston Eagles will have $6 burger baskets Monday, December 9 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. and a smear tournament at 7:00 p.m. 

ECFE’s Mixed Monday event for Monday, December 9  is Daddy and Me for birth to 5 year olds and will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Washington School. Registration is not required.

The City of Crookston Truth in Taxation meeting will be held Monday, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at city hall.

The Polk County Commissioners will meet Tuesday, December 10 at 8:00 a.m. in the Commissioner’s Room at the Polk County Government Center. A budget hearing will be held at 6:00 p.m.

The Golden Link will have an Entertainment Committee meeting Tuesday, December 10 at 9:30 a.m., Red Hats Christmas at noon, cards at 12:45 p.m. and Debby’s Canasta at 6:00 p.m. 

The free ECFE Unplug and Play for ages birth to kindergarten will be Tuesday, December 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Washington School gym. A variety of equipment will be available for children and their parents to enjoy and explore together.  

Crookston VFW Post 1902 and the Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the VFW.

Crookston Chapter No. 137, Order of the Eastern Star will meet Tuesday, December 10 at 7:00 pm.  The meeting will be preceded by a Pizza Supper at 6:15. This will be the final meeting until March of 2020.  Every member is invited to attend.

The Fisher American Legion and SAL meetings will be Tuesday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m. 

Concert Pianist Brayden Drevlow from Thief River Falls will debut his personal arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet at in the Evergreen Hall Lobby at UMC Tuesday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m.  Hot cocoa and cookies will be served. This event is free and open to the community. 

Crookston Community Education will have a Kids N Canvas Holiday Art Class for kids ages 6-13 on Saturday, December 14 from 10:30-noon at the Washington Elementary Cafeteria. Instructor is Jolene Beiswenger.  Kids will paint a wooden Christmas stocking door hanger, wrapping paper will be available if they want to wrap it as a gift. Aprons will be provided, but please wear paint clothes. Cost is $20 and you must sign up by Wednesday, December 11th. To register, call 281-5078.

The Fertile Public Library will host a free early out activity featuring science, technology, and art on Wednesday, December 11 at 2:30 p.m. Children in grades K-8 are invited to explore Platonic Solids and make Tetrahedrons with library staff.  Children ages 10 and under should be accompanied by an adult.

The Fisher American Legion Wednesday Night Special for December 11 is a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich and Baked Beans for $8. 

The Crookston Cub Scouts are having a hat and mitten drive for the Community Food Boxes.  They will be collecting through December 12 at Cathedral, TLC Family Hair Care, Trinity Lutheran, Hardware Hank, Crookston True Value, and Rejuv Salon & Spa.

RiverView Health will host a four hour CPR class at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 12 at the RiverView Home Care Building located at 721 South Minnesota Street. Area farmers are invited for coffee, conversation, and community support events held Saturday, December 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Brekken Farms, 28383 255th Ave SW in Crookston.  And from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Adams Family Farm, 20817 430th Ave SW, just south of East Grand Forks. The events offer a venue for the farming community to come together and support each other after a challenging harvest.  The events are organized by Northwestern Mental Health Center, Brenda Mack Consulting, H.O.P.E. Coalition, CHS, Inc., Adams Family Farms, and Brekken Family Farms.

The second from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Joe DiMaggio’s Restaurant in Red Lake Falls.  Topics will include local historical and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, and a worksheet to help determine a fair and profitable rental agreement.  No pre-registration is necessary. 

The Crookston Public Library will have Cookie Decorating Tuesday, December 17 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Get in the holiday spirit and join library staff for a winter-themed storytime, followed by decorating cookies.  All ages are welcome, hot cocoa provided. 

RiverView Recovery Center is inviting the public to a presentation by Nate Espinoza about addiction.  As a pastor, and a person who identifies with long-term recovery, he understands the power of addiction. His message resonates well with those still struggling with the disease, as well as those who may thankfully find themselves in recovery.  The presentation will be Tuesday, December 17 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Crookston Care and Share.

Crookston Public Schools Early Childhood Screening will be held January 6 and 7.  The screening is a quick and simple check of how children are doing between the ages of three and four years. Children born before January 1, 2017, who have not yet been screened, will be eligible. If you didn’t not receive information about setting up an appointment for screening,  call 281-5078. 

There will be a Baby Sign and Early Literacy class for parents and caregivers of children ages birth to 2 years and 11 months on Tuesday, January 6  from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library. The Crookston Public Library hosts WOW: What’s on Wednesday? the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. for children ages 7-12 with crafts, activities and more. 

JAM TIME, which stands for Jesus and Me, Together in Motion Every Day, is a new, non-denominational children’s ministry program to help kids dig into the Bible and grow their relationship with the Lord. The program will be Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Hope Church in Fertile, starting in October. All children, Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to attend! Each night at JAM TIME, children will engage in a variety of small group and large group activities that reinforce a key Bible point and verse for the week. Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., preschool children and their caregivers are invited to Storytime at the Crookston Public Library. Each week, they’ll explore a different theme through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel board stories, and a craft. No pre-registration is required, but they ask childcare providers and other groups to call ahead to ensure there will be adequate supplies at 281-4522.

Riverview Health’s monthly Type 2 Diabetes Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at RiverView Health in Meeting Room 1.  The group is led by RiverView Dietitian Darcy Larson, RD, LD and Kelsey Billing, RN, BSN. The Type 2 meetings are open to anyone with Type 2 diabetes and their family members.  New members are always welcome.
