The Crookston Public Library will host a presentation featuring the topic of “Starting a Small Business” Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Crookston Public Library.  All are welcome to learn how Crookston business owner Carol Simmons turned her hobby into a successful business creating natural bath and body products. The presentation is offered free-of-charge and is open to everyone. It will be held Saturday, October 2 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Those interested in creating their own Build-a-Bath product to take home, should contact the library at 218-281-4522 by September 30 to reserve their materials.

The Crookston Care and Share will be giving away New and Gently Used Winter Coats during the following days. Today from 9am-4pm, and Friday Oct 1st 9am-4pm. Please enter the building through the donation door located in the East parking lot. One family is permitted in the building at a time, masks are required.

The Bible Baptist Church in Crookston will host a Family Fall Festival on Saturday, October 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The whole community is invited to bring your family out for this free event. There will be games, prizes, hayrides, and bounce houses. Food will also be provided. The Bible Baptist Church is located one mile east of Highland School.

The Crookston Fire Department will have an Open House Saturday, October 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The theme this year is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Kids will have the opportunity to Spray a Fire house, meet their local Firefighters, win prizes, and much more. Registration is not required, and the cost is free.

The Crookston Early Family Childhood Education will be hosting a Special Focus Class, Monday October 11, “Baby and Me” from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Washington School. The class is for parents and their children ages birth to 12 months and will allow them to spend time with other families and engage in sensory and movement activities. RiverView Health is offering a CPR class on Thursday, October 14 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the RiverView Home Care Building, 721 South Minnesota Street in Crookston. Cost is $50 for those needing certification and for those not needing certification the class is free. Due to Covid-19, class sizes are limited, no walk-ins will be allowed and face masks are required. To register, call 218-281-9405.

The Crookston High School will have early dismissal on Tuesday, October 19, for Parent/Teacher Conferences from 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

United Way will have their Soup and Chili Cook-off and Chocolate Extravaganza on Tuesday, October 19 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Crookston High School Commons. $5 per person, ages 5 and under are free. Additional free will donations will be accepted. The Valley Fiddlers will also perform.

Funds2orgs is having a Shoe Drive with all proceeds going to Care and Share in Crookston. The Shoe Drive will run from now, through November 30. The goal is to receive 2,500 pairs of shoes. Donation sites with binds in Crookston include Benedictine Living Community-The Summit, Cathedral Church, First Presbyterian Church, Wesley United Methodist Church, Hardware Hank, Hugo’s Family Marketplace, Trinity Lutheran Church and the front entrance of RiverView Health.  In Fertile at Aaron’s Grocery and in Fisher at the Cenex C-Store. The Crookston Early Family Childhood Education will be hosting a Special Focus Class, Monday November 8, “Just Toddling” from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Washington School. The class is for parents and their children ages 12-24 months and will allow parents to spend time with each other while their toddlers play with activities designed for children their age. The Crookston Public Library will be hosting an event “Starting and Sustaining a Small Business” featuring Vertical Malt’s President Adam Wagner. The event is Tuesday, November 9, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The event will be at the Crookston Public Library and all are welcome to attend and learn how this small business tuned into a full scale operation.

The Crookston Public Library will be hosting an event “Reading by the Red Book Club” on Thursday, November 23, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. All adults are invited to discuss the book “If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now.” Refreshments will be provided, no registration is required.

The Crookston Public Library will close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, and be closed all day Thursday, November 25, in observance of Thanksgiving.

CONTINUING ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Crookston Public Library has partnered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to offer free access to the state’s parks and recreation areas. The Minnesota State Parks Library Program offers community members the opportunity to visit any state park or recreation area in Minnesota without paying an entrance fee. The pass provides access to parks around the state for seven days and is now available at the Crookston Public Library, with two passes available per week. Passes may be reserved up to seven days in advance by calling the library at 218-281-4522. The Crookston Public Library is located at 110 North Ash Street. 

The Crookston Public Library’s Books & Brews Book Club meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Drafts Sports Bar and Grill. They will discuss books and enjoy beverages. Appetizers are provided by the Friends of the Crookston Public Library; participants are responsible for the cost of their own food and drinks. All are welcome. 

Twig and Branch Collection will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, running May through October.  Place the materials on your curbside.  Branches must be cut in four-foot lengths and bundled for the crews to take them away.  Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away.  Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule a pickup. Please note that leaves, grass, and other compostable material must be in the clear City of Crookston bags and will be collected on your regular garbage collection day.

The Golden Link is serving noon lunch Monday through Friday and Thursday evening dinner. The cost is $6. Veterans’ meals are half price on the first Monday of the month. Call 281-3072 by 10:00 the day you plan to have lunch. 

The Crookston Friends of the Library meet on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

The Crookston Library Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:15. 

The Cove Youth Center in Crookston is open Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students and parents should call ahead to check the availability of the youth center at 218-470-0149. 

Polk County Public Health is available to answer questions about COVID 19 and help obtain essential services such as groceries, medications, and other daily items at 281-3385.  The phone is staffed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
