Crookston High School send-off for the State MathCounts team Friday, March 13 has been canceled due to the State MathCounts Competition being canceled. 

The Knights of Columbus Fish Fry will be held at the Cathedral Church on Friday nights from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Fish Fries will be held  March 13, March 20, March 27 and April 3. Adult meals are $13, a children’s meal is $8.00. Extra fillets are $6. Gluten free meals are available. Desserts served by Church Circles are $1 extra. Meals to go are $1 extra, call 701-215-7056.

The Fisher Robotics Team will have a Fish Fry Fundraiser on Friday, March 13 at the American Legion in Fisher from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The menu is Walleye or Jumbo Shrimp, Baked Potato or French Fries, and Colelaw for $12.  There will also be door prizes. All three Fisher Robotics teams competed in the state competition this season and both high school teams will compete in the National Competition in April, with one debuting the new drone program.  All proceeds benefit Fisher Robotics. 

The Crookston Eagles will have Jackpot Bar Bingo, Horse Races, and Meat Raffles Friday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m., $1,000 must go.  The kitchen will be open from 5:30 to 7:30 with a $7 special of 2 Pulled Pork Sliders and Chips or $8 special of Deep-fried Shrimp and Fries.  Available for $5 are Chicken Strips, Mac & Cheese Egg Rolls, Mini Corndogs, Jalapeno Poppers, Mozzarella Sticks, Onion Rings, Egg Rolls, and $3 French Fries. 

The Red Lake Falls American Legion will have a Fish Fry Friday, March 13, serving begins at 6:00 p.m. 

Winter Kart Racing and Swap Meet will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15 at the Red River Valley Winter Shows in Crookston. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. both days. Race time is 12:00 noon. There will be three sessions on Saturday and two on Sunday. Admission is $10. Concessions by Oak Pit Grill. The Swap Meet will be held throughout both days. The Crookston City Council will have a strategic planning session Saturday, March 14 at 7:00 a.m. at the Crookston Inn North Shore Room.

Trails for Treatment will have a free will offering Musical Fundraiser 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 15 at the Presbyterian Church in Red Lake Falls. Music and fellowship will feature music selections by Jennifer Wieland, Sherry Knott and audience participation. Coffee and bars will be served. This event is hosted by the retired Flaming Flamingos. Trails for Treatment is a grant program that offers financial assistance to patients receiving cancer treatments.

The local unit of the Crookston American Legion Auxiliary will again sponsor two girls to attend the Minnesota Girls State Session at Bethel University, St Paul from June 14-20. The community is invited to a “Rural Revival Worship” on Sunday, March 15 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile, beginning at 7 pm.  Come and experience a revival of hope in our heartland featuring the Red River Worship Band, led by Jon Dahl from Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead!  Hear an encouraging message of being there – God for us and all of us for one another–Neighbor for Neighbor, from Bishop Bill Tesch and Rev. Dr. Aaron Suomala Folkerds. The offering will go to The North Country Food Bank, which distributes nearly 8.1 million pounds of food each year in northwest and west-central Minnesota.   Coffee and desert will be served following the worship service. Entertainment will be Irish Music by Tamara Bertram, executive director of the Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra.  The music is sponsored by the Crookston Community Theater.

The Fertile Public Library’s Resolute Readers Book Club will meet Wednesday, March 18 at 5:00 p.m. to discuss “Beneath a Scarlet Sky” by Mark T. Sullivan.  

Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston will have a Wednesday Lenten Supper and Service on Wednesday, March 18. Trinity’s National Youth Gathering Team will serve  supper in the Fellowship Hall from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.. The Wednesday Lenten Worship service will be at 6:30.

The Crookston Boy Scouts are doing their annual food drive “Scouting for Food” March 21 through March 28. 

The Shelly Fire and Rescue Annual Pancake Breakfast will be Saturday, March 21 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Shelly Senior and Community Center.  They will be serving pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, milk, juice, and coffee for a freewill offering. Everyone is welcome. 

The Crookston Gun Show will be held Saturday, March 21 from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday March 22 from 9:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Crookston National Guard Armory. This is a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten special event.

The annual meeting of members of the Red Lake Electric Cooperative, Inc. will take place Wednesday, March 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.  The meeting agenda includes the 2019 year in review, financial reports, and election of directors. The Marshall County Cooperative Annual meeting will take place Wednesday, March 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion in Warren.  Following the meeting a complimentary meal will be provided in appreciation of your loyal patronage. The Highland Elementary 3rd grade music concert will be Thursday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m. 

All community members are invited to a presentation “Becoming The Best Version of Ourselves” Thursday, March 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Fisher High School.  A meal will be provided from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria and the school’s National Honor Society and Champs will provide child care so everyone can attend the presentation.  There will be door prizes. The presentation is provided in part by a grant from the Fisher Area Community Fund. 

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold an open house for “Conversations about Deer” and deer management at the Crookston Area DNR Office at 127 Bradley Boulevard in Erskine from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 26.

ECFE Pop In and Play,  for ages birth to kindergarten entrance, will be March 28 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Washington School. Come play in the gym using equipment designed for young children. Class is free. 

The Polk County K9 Association is hosting “Dodge IT for the K9 Unit” on Saturday, March 28 at the Crookston Sports Center.  Cost is $50 per team of six, plus two benchwarmers. Registration is at 11:00 a.m., the dodgeball tournament starts at noon.  Wear unique team attire and there are prizes for the winners. Deputy Olson and K9 Buffy are scheduled to make their first public appearance at the tournament.  Participants must be at least 18-years-old. Author Chris Ingraham made headlines when he wrote a national article declaring Red Lake County, Minnesota the “worst place to live in America”. When the community challenged him to visit their community, he flew to Minnesota for a surprising visit, and will now share the story of how, impressed by the locals’ warmth, humor and hospitality, he and his family decided to relocate to the town he had thought the worst in America. Ingraham will visit the Fertile Public Library to share the story of his family’s big move from his new book, “If You Lived Here You’d Be Home by Now”. His appearance is scheduled Tuesday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. at the Fertile Library, 101 Mill St. S. and is open to the public and is offered free of charge.

There will be a Baby Sign and Early Literacy class for parents and caregivers of children ages birth to 2 years and 11 months on Tuesday, April 7, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library. Participants will learn basic baby signs and literacy tips to develop language through reading books. This is a free, one time class, the deadline to register is Thursday, April 2. Kindergarten Roundup in Crookston will be Tuesday, April 7 at Washington School. Register will be at 6:15 p.m.and the program will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Each child who attends will receive a tool kit, which is a bag filled with items to help them prepare for kindergarten.

The free ECFE Unplug and Play for ages birth to kindergarten will be Tuesday, April 7 from 5:30 to 6:30 at Washington School gym. A variety of equipment will be available for children and their parents to enjoy and explore together.

The Crookston Public Library’s ‘Families Read Every Day’ (FRED) program will be Tuesday, April 7 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and is designed to encourage families and other role models to read to their children on a daily basis.  Families are invited to bring the special children in their lives, ages two to five, to the library for a fun program including an enhanced storytime followed by a special activity. This is a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten special event. 

Riverview’s Childbirth Classes, a series of four 2 hour classes on four consecutive Tuesdays, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. will start on April 7. Classes will be held in Riverview’s Home Care Building, 721 S. Minnesota Street in Crookston. Classes are free for those delivering at Riverview. For those delivering elsewhere, the cost is $25. The Crookston Public Library will hold a program Tuesday, April 14 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. titled “Irena Sendler: Hero of WWII Polish Resistance.” Connie Hannesson, a former Crookston Elementary School teacher will give a free presentation about Polish resistance hero Irena Sendler, who is credited with saving the lives of more than 2,500 Jewish children living in the Warsaw Ghetto. By working with the Polish Resistance Movement she used a variety of methods to help children escape from being transported to the Treblinka death camp.  Hear this inspiring story in an appropriate presentation for all ages.

Feed My Starving Children will pack 404,000 meals April 17-19 in the Minnkota Powers Building in Grand Forks.  To do this the coordinating committee is hoping to raise $97,000. Attire to Inspire Fashion Flash Fundraiser for the Villa St. Vincent and The Summit will be Friday, April 17 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Crookston National Guard Armory.  Shopping with local businesses selling their fashionable, chic merchandise, and creative designs along with socializing with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. with the Fashion show at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and can be purchased at the Villa St. Vincent business office inside the main entrance to The Summit from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Montague’s Flower Shop, Erickson Embroidery and 2nd Street Boutique, and at Wonderful Life Foods.

The Crookston High PATCH program offers after school homework help for 7-12th grade students Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the CHS Media Center.  The program is in need of additional volunteers to help the growing number of students needing homework support. JAM TIME, which stands for Jesus and Me, Together in Motion Every Day, is a new, non-denominational children’s ministry program to help kids dig into the Bible and grow their relationship with the Lord.
