The RiverView Auxiliary will be hosting a Blanket and Sheet Sale today from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and Wednesday, February 20th from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm in Heritage Hallway at RiverView Health.  There will be a variety of sheets, blankets, pillows and more.  Make sure to come and check out the sale.  Proceeds benefit Auxiliary projects for the year.

CHEDA will have an informational meeting this morning at 8:00 a.m. in the Valley Technology Park conference room.  A quorum of City Council or the CHEDA Board may be present, however no action will be taken. 

Highland Elementary School will have a Science Fair from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. today in the Highland Cafeteria.  The students recently participated in the Science Fair and UMC and will have their projects and awards on display.

The Polk County Commissioners will meet today at 10:00 a.m. in the commissioner’s room at the Polk County Government Center.

Crookston Community Education presents Elementary Robotics class for children ages 4 to 7 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Washington School Library taught by Jed Shanley.  The classes will be offered today, February, 21, 26 or 28.  Explore the fundamentals of robotics.  Learn to read blueprints and code.  Model, prototype, investigate, analyze, troubleshoot and more.  No experience necessary. The Crookston Public Library presents STEMsational Tuesday for kids age 7 to 12 today at 3:30 p.m. Develop and hone engineering skills by creating a cupid with movable wings.

The Resolute Readers, the book club of the Fertile Public Library, has announced that their next discussion will focus on “Profiles in Courage” by John F. Kennedy. The book profiles eight historical figures, known for their acts of astounding integrity in the face of opposition. All are welcome to join the discussion, free of charge, at the group’s next meeting, which will be held Wednesday, February 20 at 5:30 p.m.

Crookston High School will host the Northwest Minnesota World of Work Event Wednesday, February 20 from 6:00 to 8:10 p.m. at the Crookston High School for Students in grades 9-12 and their parents or guardians.  Choose which career field you want to hear about with three business panels in Business Management and Administration; Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Arts, Communications and Information Systems; Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology; Health Science Technology and Human Services.

Jerry Snow, the owner of Cofe` will host an introduction to coffee Wednesday, February 20 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in UMN Crookston’s Prairie Lounge in the Sargeant Student Center.  This event is free and open to the public.  During this time, attendees will have the opportunity to learn what contributes to the flavor of coffees as well as its history and culture. Furthermore, participants will receive a sample pack of coffee with brewing instructions in order to try the coffee at home.

The University of Minnesota Crookston will welcome Joel Brown to their Thursday Commons February 21 at 12:30 p.m. in Bede Ballroom.  The event is open to the public.  Brown will portray George Bonga, believed to be one of the first people of African-American descent born in Minnesota.  Bonga’s biggest claim to fame may have been tracking the man accused of killing Alfred Aitkin in 1837 and bringing him to Fort Snelling bound on a sled prompting the state’s first murder trial. 

The Climax Parish Food Shelf will be open Thursday, February 21 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The Crookston Lions will host Trivia Night Thursday, February 21 at 6:30 p.m. at DaRoo’s in Crookston. 

The Crookston Eagles will have bar bingo at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 21. 

Washington Elementary School’s Winter Fun Day will be Friday, February 22.

The Golden Link will have a free will breakfast of French Toast and Sausage Friday, February 22 at 8:00 a.m. as a fundraiser for the kitchen floor.  There will be morning smear at 9:00 a.m., and cards at 12:45 p.m.

Crookston High School students grades 7 to 12 will have an early out day Friday, February 22.  School will be released at 12:40 p.m. for the Section Wrestling Tournament being held at Crookston High School.

The Crookston Eagles will have bar bingo and meat raffles Friday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m., $400 must go in bingo.  The kitchen will be open from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. serving 2 Pulled Pork Sliders and Chips for $7, Mini Corndogs, Egg Rolls, Jalapeno Poppers, Mozzarella Sticks, or Chicken Bites for $5 and French Fries for $3. 

The Crookston Civic Music League’s Entertainment Series welcomes Tapestry to perform at the Crookston High School Auditorium on Friday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by Season Ticket only.

The Crookston Eagles will have bar bingo Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m., $400 must go.

The Crookston Eagles will hold Pin Night on Saturday February 23. The Aerie and Auxiliary members with consecutive years of membership ending in 5 or 0 (5,10,15,20 and so on) will be provided a free supper, and a recognition pin.  State Aerie President Mike “Hanny” Hanson and Madam Auxiliary President Deb Henry will be guest speakers.  A stuffed pork chop dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m., with a pin presentation starting at 6:45, followed by the Aerie Eagle and Auxiliary Eagle of the year awards.  All members and guests are invited.  The cost of the meal will be $10.00 for all other guests not receiving a pin.

February Fitness Fever presents Family Fun Sundays.  The events are free and open to all area children, families and adults.  On Sunday, February 24 there will be a winter movement indoor fun event from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Functionally Fit II Building on the corner of West Robert and South Main St.  The event will include make and take energy snacks at Wonderful Life Foods, Zumba, dance with Just for Kix, hip hop, Tae Kwon Do and a Kumdo demonstration.  Tri-Valley is offering free transportation to February Fitness Fever events.  Please call by 4:30 p.m. the Friday before the event to schedule, the final return trip home will leave the event at 2:30 p.m. February Fitness Fever is sponsored by Tri-Valley Opportunity Council, Inc. and Polk County Wellness Coalition.

The yearly Feed My Starving Children Bagley Food Packing Event date is May 14-15.  In 2018 approximately 800 volunteers across the 15-county northwest Minnesota area packaged 147,744 meals and they hope to surpass that number this year.  UNICEF estimates nearly 6,000 children die daily worldwide from starvation. Meals are 22 cents, to donate or to volunteer for one or more two-hour packing shifts call 218-766-8176.  Donations need to be in by March 20.  Choose love and help save lives.

The Agriculture Water Forum as part of the “We Are Water” exhibit has been rescheduled in Bede Ballroom from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 25.  Presentations include Minnesota Agriculture Water Quality Certification program, the science of vegetated buffers and movement of water in tile drainage systems. Lunch is provided.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Horseman’s Association and Study Abroad Club are holding a fundraiser in the UTOC Riding Arena Monday, February 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Horse rides will be $3, $1 for game tickets, there will be a silent auction, snacks and coloring.

Crookston Early Childhood is offering a Build A Wood Project for young carpenters (birth to five years) Monday, February 25 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Washington School Gym.  Please bring an adult, Phillips screwdriver and a hammer to build a stool.  Register early to save your spot by calling 218-281-5078.  There is a $5 cost per wood project.

Ben will share his remarkable journey of faith after a car accident left his face and body and his dreams of being a basketball star crushed after he lost control of his car, was ejected out of the passenger door and landed in an icy field. The Crookston Eagles will hold their 5th Annual Camp Confidence Extravaganza on Saturday, March 2nd. DNR Hunter Safety Training, for anyone age 11 and older, will be held at the Crookston Gun Club, 1 mile north of UMC on Highway 75. Classes start May 7th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Youth hunters and anyone planning on hunting out of Minnesota are required to have a Firearm Safety Training Certificate. Early Childhood Family Education has Oh, The Places We’ll Go each Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance.  Mix it up Mondays and enroll in the EFCF class that is going places. Both parent and child’s needs are met with creative activities and personal growth opportunities.  Parents will select their favorite places to visit and explore in Crookston and the surrounding area.  Mix up your Mondays and register for this exciting class offered from October through May.  Cost for the entire program is $50.

Early Childhood Family Education offers Unplug and Play the first and second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for children ages birth to kindergarten at Washington School. It’s time to “Unplug and Play!” Get out of the house and have some family fun in the gym at Washington School. A variety of equipment will be available for children and their parents to enjoy and explore together (riding toys, scooters, net games, balls, circle games, etc.). Get up and get going to this fun and exciting FREE ECFE class.

Riverview Health’s monthly Type 2 Diabetes Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at RiverView Health in Meeting Room 1.  The group is led by RiverView Dietitian Darcy Larson, RD, LD and Kelsey Billing, RN, BSN.  The Type 2 meetings are open to anyone with Type 2 diabetes and their family members.  New members are always welcome.

Men’s Basketball at Highland Gym is every Wednesday night until May from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All players must be 18 years of age, out of High School and must register before playing.  Register at the Community Education Office at Washington School, the fee is $15.  No one will be allowed to play before registering.

Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., preschool children and their caregivers are invited to Storytime at the Crookston Public Library. Each week, they’ll explore a different theme through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel board stories and a craft. No pre-registration is required, but they ask childcare providers and other groups to call ahead to ensure there will be adequate supplies at 281-4522. If you are a member of the Golden Link and leaving town for the winter send in your dues before you leave.  Membership dues ($20) run January to December. Early Childhood Family Education offers Books Alive Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Washington School for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance.  Books Alive encourages pre-literacy skills in young children by engaging them in a new book each week and providing activities that make the book seem to COME ALIVE! Activities include creative art, science, and sensory exploration, music/rhythm/rhyme and dance, and imaginative play. The class ends with a cooking project, related to the book, which is enjoyed as a snack. New friends and vital early learning will be acquired from this fun class! Books Alive costs $50, with a $15 supply fee and runs October through May.

Early Childhood Family Education presents Mixed Age Magic on Fridays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Washington School.  This magical class begins in the gym with active playtime using balls, scooters, parachutes, riding toys, and other fun equipment.  After gym time, families return to the classroom for circle time with stories and songs.  Parents will meet informally to share ideas and discuss topics such as positive discipline strategies, challenging behaviors, food, health, safety tips and more.  Parents learn from each other as they discuss topics that most interest them. During parent education time, the children remain in the classroom to play and explore with each other and the early childhood teacher and classroom aide.  Mixed Age Magic is for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance, the cost is $50, and the program runs from October through May.

Early Childhood Family Education offers Pop in and Play the third Saturday of each Month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance.  Pop in and play in the gym! You and your child can come and play in the gym using equipment designed for young children. Come expecting to have lots of fun making wonderful memories with your child. This class is free.
