Researchers from the University of Minnesota, along with the Minnesota Wheat Growers and the Minnesota Wheat Council will hold Small Grains Update Meetings today through January 18 throughout northwest Minnesota. The workshops will include information on new spring wheat varieties, nitrogen management in wheat, marketing your 2018 and 2019 crops and much more. The meetings are free. All are welcome to join the book club’s discussion. The group plans to discuss “Profiles in Courage” by John F. Kennedy in February.

The AARP Driver Safety Class will be held Thursday, January 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the Golden Link Senior Center.  This is a four-hour defensive driving refresher course for drivers age 55 or older. 

Rotary Reading Night will be held Thursday, January 17 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library with members of the Crookston Rotary Club reading books to kids and families. The first 50 kids at the event will receive a free book. Refreshments will be served, and kids can make their bookmark, too. To go with their year of service projects and with Rotary International having the goal to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, the Crookston club hopes this event will bring more families out for reading fun on a regular basis.

Chicken bites, egg rolls, mini corn dogs, mozzarella sticks or jalapeno poppers for $5 and fries for $3.

The Sunrise Center’s 1st Annual Spectacular Carnival will be Saturday, January 19 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral School Gym.  There will games including ring toss, basketball shot, fishing pond, and more along with prizes. Tickets are $1/ea or 6 for $5.  The meal is $5 for hotdog, chips, fruit snack and beverage.

The Annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships will be held in the Red Lake Falls High School gym on Sunday, January 20 at 1:00 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and participants may come and practice at that time.  The contest is open to boys and girls ages 9-14.  A participant may only take part in one local event per years.  Winners will receive a trophy and will advance to the district level, followed by regional, state and international competitions if you advance.  Contact Red Lake Falls High School for a registration form or Steve Philion at 253-2499.  Participants can also register the day of the event.

The 7th Annual Red River Valley Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be hosted by the University of Minnesota Crookston Monday, January 21.  The event will begin with the Unity Walk at 10:30 a.m. from the Crookston Inn to UMC’s Kiehle Auditorium.  The Celebration program will be at 11:00 a.m. in Kiehle Auditorium including greetings, performances, speakers, and presentation of the Spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award.  A free lunch social will follow in Brown Dining Hall.  The event is partnering with the kick-off of the “We are Water” exhibit at UMC.  The celebration is sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Programs, the University of Minnesota Extension – Crookston, West Polk Soil & Water Conservation District and Minnesota Humanities Center.

The University of Minnesota Crookston will hold an artist’s reception, and display of works for the statewide “We Are Water” project Friday, January 25.  Doors open at 5:00 p.m. with a social and refreshments.  Programs begin at 6:30 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium.  Meet the artists, view their artwork and learn about water.  Ten years of Clean Water, Land and Legacy funding from Arts and Cultural Heritage Fun will be celebrated with special guest speakers.  Free parking is available by Kiehle Auditorium.  

The Villa St. Vincent will have their 3rd annual Fashion Show titled Attire to Inspire Friday, January 25 at the Crookston National Guard Armory.  There will be a social from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. with hors-d’oeuvres and a cash bar.  The show begins at 7:00 p.m. Local businesses will be displaying their fashionable chic merchandise and creative designs.  Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.  Tickets can be purchased at the Villa St. Vincent business office inside the Summit main entrance from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and also at Montague’s Flower Shop, Erickson’s Embroidery/2nd Street Boutique, Wonderful Life Foods, and Rejuv Salon & Spa.

Ag-Arama 2019 at the University of Minnesota Crookston is Saturday, January 26 beginning at 8:00 a.m. in UTOC.  This year’s theme is “Caught up in the Country.”

There will be a benefit meal, silent auction, and live auction for Rochelle Chaput on Saturday, January 26 at the American Legion in Red Lake Falls.  The meal will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a silent auction throughout the night, as well as a live auction at 8:00 p.m. that evening.  Rochelle is the daughter of Craig and Carole Chaput.  She was diagnosed in 2015 at the age of 16 with Snapping Scapula Syndrome, a very rare syndrome.  Rochelle has had five surgeries at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and continued to travel to the Mayo Clinic for treatment.  The family has made over 50 trips to Rochester, and the expenses they have incurred have become a very stressful financial burden for the family.  Please make plans to attend the benefit or donate for Rochelle.  You can contact Steve Philion at 218-253-2499 or sphilion@rlfedu.org if you would like to make a monetary donation or donate an item for the auctions.  Thank you!

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will have a Christian Movie and Soup Supper Sunday, January 27.  The supper will start at 5:00 p.m. with a choice of two soups, bread and cookies or bars along with coffee and lemonade.  They will be showing ‘I Can Only Imagine’ the inspiring and unknown true story behind MercyMe’s beloved, chart-topping song that brings ultimate hope to so many as a gripping reminder of the power of true forgiveness.  There is no charge for this community event.

The 16th Annual Ice Buster Daze Fishing Derby and Radar Run will be Saturday, February 9. Tickets will be pre-sold at Ceason’s Bait & Tackle in Crookston, sales limited to 350. There will be a free will offering breakfast at the Crookston Eagles from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. The Radar Run is 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the cost is $20 for two runs and includes one Swiss Steak supper at the Crookston Eagles. The Bikini Radar Run will be at 2:00 p.m. on the Red Lake River. Ice fishing on the Red Lake River by Central Park from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. $20 a hole includes one Swiss Steak supper at the Crookston Eagles. Early Childhood Family Education has Oh, The Places We’ll Go each Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance.  Mix it up Mondays and enroll in the EFCF class that is going places. Both parent and child’s needs are met with creative activities and personal growth opportunities.  Parents will select their favorite places to visit and explore in Crookston and the surrounding area.  Mix up your Mondays and register for this exciting class offered from October through May.  Cost for the entire program is $50.

Early Childhood Family Education offers Unplug and Play the first and second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for children ages birth to kindergarten at Washington School. A variety of equipment will be available for children and their parents to enjoy and explore together (riding toys, scooters, net games, balls, circle games, etc.). Get up and get going to this fun and exciting FREE ECFE class.

Riverview Health’s monthly Type 2 Diabetes Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at RiverView Health in Meeting Room 1.  The group is led by RiverView Dietitian Darcy Larson, RD, LD and Kelsey Billing, RN, BSN.  The Type 2 meetings are open to anyone with Type 2 diabetes and their family members.  New members are always welcome.

Men’s Basketball at Highland Gym is every Wednesday night until May from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All players must be 18 years of age, out of High School and must register before playing.  Register at the Community Education Office at Washington School, the fee is $15.  No one will be allowed to play before registering.

Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., preschool children and their caregivers are invited to Storytime at the Crookston Public Library. Each week, they’ll explore a different theme through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel board stories and a craft. No pre-registration is required, but they ask childcare providers and other groups to call ahead to ensure there will be adequate supplies at 281-4522. If you are a member of the Golden Link and leaving town for the winter send in your dues before you leave.  Membership dues ($20) run January to December. Early Childhood Family Education offers Books Alive Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Washington School for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance.  Books Alive encourages pre-literacy skills in young children by engaging them in a new book each week and providing activities that make the book seem to COME ALIVE! Activities include creative art, science, and sensory exploration, music/rhythm/rhyme and dance, and imaginative play. The class ends with a cooking project, related to the book, which is enjoyed as a snack. New friends and vital early learning will be acquired from this fun class! Books Alive costs $50, with a $15 supply fee and runs October through May.

Early Childhood Family Education presents Mixed Age Magic on Fridays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Washington School.  This magical class begins in the gym with active playtime using balls, scooters, parachutes, riding toys, and other fun equipment.  After gym time, families return to the classroom for circle time with stories and songs.  Parents will meet informally to share ideas and discuss topics such as positive discipline strategies, challenging behaviors, food, health, safety tips and more.  Parents learn from each other as they discuss topics that most interest them. During parent education time, the children remain in the classroom to play and explore with each other and the early childhood teacher and classroom aide.  Mixed Age Magic is for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance, the cost is $50, and the program runs from October through May.

Early Childhood Family Education offers Pop in and Play the third Saturday of each Month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for children ages birth to kindergarten entrance.  Pop in and play in the gym! You and your child can come and play in the gym using equipment designed for young children. Come expecting to have lots of fun making wonderful memories with your child. This class is free.
