The Villa St. Vincent Auxiliary invites you to take part in the “Light Up A Life” Tree.  A $5 gift will light a bulb on the tree in memory or in honor of someone special. The tree lighting ceremony and reading of all the names will be on Sunday, December 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the Villa St. Vincent Wellness/Activity Room. After the ceremony, there will be coffee and cookies.  All are invited to attend. 

The Polk County Commissioners will meet today at 8:00 a.m. in the Commissioner’s Room at the Polk County Government Center. 

The Golden Link will have a UCare Medicare Update today at 10:00 a.m., and cards at 12:45 p.m. 

The Pirate Cove Store at Crookston High School will be open for several upcoming events at Crookston High School.  The clothing is printed at the school and supplies are limited. The Pirate Cove will be open tonight for the Girl’s Basketball game from 6:00 p.m. until halftime; on Monday, December 2 for the Boy’s Basketball game from 6:00 p.m. until halftime; and Thursday, December 12 for the wrestling match.  

The Spinecrackers Book Club will meet at the Crookston Public Library today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss “This Tender Land” by William Kent Krueger. 

The Crookston High School Choir and Orchestra Departments present the 20th Annual “Classic Noel!” will be Sunday, December 8.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner served at 6:00 p.m., concert at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the evening are $20. The menu will include Prime Rib, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Starter Salad with Bread Roll, and Ice Cream Dessert.  Catered by Drafts Sports Bar & Grill. Tickets are available from the CHS Music students, at the CHS Officer, Montague’s Flower and Crookston Floral. Ticket sales end November 27. Tickets for the concert only are $4/adult, $3/student, and are available at the door. 

The Golden Link will have cribbage Wednesday, November 27 at 9:30 a.m., men’s cards at 10:00 a.m., the free move – Time Traveler’s Wife – at 1:30 p.m., and the UMC retirees at 1:30 p.m. 

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will have a community Thanksgiving Eve Service at 7:00 p.m. The service is open to anyone in the community and other congregations have been invited.  Please bring non-perishable food items for the Community Christmas Baskets. The Thanksgiving offering will go to the Community Christmas Basket program as well. Apple and pumpkin desserts will be served by the Parish Fellowship following the worship service. 

The Fisher American Legion Wednesday Night Special for November 27 is Swedish Meatballs, Potato, and Vegetable for $8. 

The Crookston Eagles will have a Pre-Thanksgiving Party with live music from Eighth Hour on Wednesday, November 27 from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.  There is a $5 cover. 

The Golden Link will be closed Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29. 

The Fisher American Legion will be closed Thursday, November 28. 

There will be no school Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29.  Crookston City Hall will be closed for Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29.  There will be no garbage collection on November 28 or 29. Garbage will be collected on Monday, December 2.  Garbage and recycling collection for Monday, December 2 will remain the same. 

The Polk County Transfer Station will be closed on Thursday, November 28 and only open from 7:00 a.m. to noon on Friday, November 29. 

Crookston’s Annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Dinner will be Thursday, November 28 beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Dining Room.  Anyone spending Thanksgiving alone or who would like to celebrate as a community is invited. If you plan on attending and/or would like to help, please call 218-281-5727 and leave a message.  There is no charge for the meal. If needed, a ride can also be scheduled when you call.  

The Crookston Eagles will have Jackpot Bingo Friday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m., $1,000 must go.  There will also be B&E Meat Raffles and Horse races. The kitchen will be open 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. serving 2 BBQ Sliders and Chips for $7.  They’ll also serve Chicken Strips, Egg Rolls, French Fries, Jalapeno Poppers, Mac & Cheese Egg Rolls, Onion Rings, Mini Corn Dogs, and Mozzarella Sticks.  There be will Stars in Bars Karaoke following Bingo!. 

Small Business Saturday is November 30. Get out your favorite flannel decor out of your totes and decorate your business! Help kick off the local holiday shopping season by joining in on the flannel craze! Post pictures of shopping local wearing your warm flannel on Small Business Saturday and your name will be entered into a drawing for Chamber Bucks. Post your images at #crookstonchannelyourflannel 

The Crookston Eagles will have bar bingo on Saturday, November 30 at 3:30 p.m., $400 must go. 

Bygland Lutheran Church will have a “Christmas in the County” Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner, Bazaar and Bake Sale Sunday, December 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Menu includes Lutefisk, Meatballs and all the trimmings. The cost is $15 for adults, $5 for children 5 to 12. Bygland Lutheran Church is located 8 miles south of East Grand Forks on Highway 220. 

Toys for Tots is a charity sponsored by the employees of the City of Crookston for needy children in the city.  Cash donations are greatly appreciated and preferred which allows the volunteers to purchase age and gender-specific gifts for each child.  Books, toys and gift wrap donations have also been received. Donations can be sent or brought to the Water Department during business hours at 124 North Broadway.

The Golden Link’s Experienced American Annual Christmas Party will be Thursday, December 5 at the Crookston Eagles.  Social Hour is at 4:30 p.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m. and program at 6:15 p.m. with Just for Kix. The mean is Walleye or Swiss Steak, Potatoes and Gravy, Candied Carrots, Salad, Bun, and Dessert.  The cost is $15 per person, register and pay by December 2 at the Golden Link 281-3072. 

The Villa St. Vincent “Angel Tree” will be set up Monday, December 2 and Tuesday, December 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or until all the angels are gone.  The Angel Tree is set up with an Angel for every resident at the Villa St. Vincent. People from the community can come to the Villa and pick an Angel or two from the tree, go shopping for a gift for their resident, and return the gift to the Villa St. Vincent where Santa will distribute them before Christmas.

The Crookston Public Library will have a Frozen 2 Party Monday, December 2 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Queen Elsa and Princess Anna of Arendelle have invited you to the library for a special event. There will be a story, music, games, and crafts to celebrate the release of Frozen 2.  Geared toward ages 8 and under. Costumes are welcome. 

The Climax Public Library will host a discussion of a popular holiday read on December 2 at 6:30 p.m. In “Christmas Cake Murder” by Joanne Fluke, go-to baker in Lake Eden, Minnesota Hannah Swensen prevents a Yuletide disaster by solving a mystery in this fun holiday read. All are welcome to join the discussion!

A U.S. Census Recruiter will visit the Fertile Public Library to discuss Census job recruitment on Tuesday, December 3 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Those interested must be able to pass a criminal background check. For more information visit https://2020census.gov/en/jobs.

Hospice of the Red River Valley’s support group Grief Journeys for Adults will meet Tuesday, December 3 from 10:30 a.m. – noon at the Crookston Public Library.  This support group is for adults 18 years and older who have experienced a loss through death. 

The free ECFE Unplug and Play for ages birth to kindergarten will be Tuesday, December 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Washington School gym. A variety of equipment will be available for children and their parents to enjoy and explore together.  

The Red Lake Falls Library will have live music from the locally based brass and woodwind quartet Windblown playing a variety of music from show tunes to ragtime to The Beatles on Tuesday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m. 

There will be a DDD course on Wednesday, December 4 at 1:00 p.m. at Andy Oman State Farm Office.  The class is instructed by Suzie Coauette, and cost is $15. Call 281-3643 to register. 

The Fertile Public Library will host free-of-charge workshops on book-making on Wednesday, December 4 at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. Learn how to make a reverse piano hinge book with removable sections and go home with a finished book. They make great gifts!

Author and former Red Lake Falls resident Mary Ann Byron will be at the Red Lake Falls Library on Thursday, December 5 at 5:00 p.m. to talk about her book “No Ordinary Life”, a thrilling inside account of newlywed diplomats who embark on their first assignment to the U.S. Embassy in Cape Town, during one of the most dangerous periods in South Africa, when Nelson Mandela was elected President.

Box 598, Crookston, MN, 56716, designate your give to “Community Christmas Food Baskets”.   Those interested in helping with the baskets, packing will take place Friday, December 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the National Guard Armoury and delivery will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 14. 

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s Fellowship Committee is purchasing 25 tickets and is hosting a bus trip to attend the annual Concordia Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. The bus will board at the church parking lot at 11 A.M. and departing at 11:30 A.M. for the concert, followed by a stop at the Frying Pan in Moorhead for dinner on the way home. The bus ride is FREE and tickets for the concert can be purchased at the GROUP RATE of $15. Please make your check out to ST. PAUL’S FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE.  They are collecting for the ticket(s) at the church office when you sign up. Tickets will be handed out as we board the bus. The Crookston Public Library has a Harry Potter Escape Room planned from Monday, December 9 with two sessions.  Session 1: 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. Session 2: 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. Find the clues and solve the codes to escape Azkaban. The Fertile Public Library will host a free early out activity featuring science, technology, and art on Wednesday, December 11 at 2:30 p.m. Children in grades K-8 are invited to explore Platonic Solids and make Tetrahedrons with library staff.  Children ages 10 and under should be accompanied by an adult.

The Crookston Cub Scouts are having a hat and mitten drive for the Community Food Boxes.  They will be collecting through December 12 at Cathedral, TLC Family Hair Care, Trinity Lutheran, Hardware Hank, Crookston True Value, and Rejuv Salon & Spa. 

RiverView Health will host a four hour CPR class at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 12 at the RiverView Home Care Building located at 721 South Minnesota Street. Due to the RiverView Health construction, the south entrance to the Altru Clinic parking lot will be closed effective until further notice. Please use Carroll Street to access the north entrance to the Altru Clinic parking lot.  Altru Clinic would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 

Branch and twig collection will be held the second and fourth Mondays of each month running May through October.  Place the materials on your curbside. Branches must be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled in order for the crews to take them away.  Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away. Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule pickup.

Tai Chi Health will be offered every Monday (check the calendar on RiverView’s webpage at www.riverviewhealth.org for confirmation each week) from 4:00 to 5:00 pm in the Education Room at the Home Care Building, 721 S. Minnesota St., Crookston. Please wear flat footwear and comfortable clothes.

The Crookston Public Library hosts WOW: What’s on Wednesday? the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. for children ages 7-12 with crafts, activities and more. 

JAM TIME, which stands for Jesus and Me, Together in Motion Every Day, is a new, non-denominational children’s ministry program to help kids dig into the Bible and grow their relationship with the Lord. The program will be Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Hope Church in Fertile, starting in October. All children, Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to attend! Each night at JAM TIME, children will engage in a variety of small group and large group activities that reinforce a key Bible point and verse for the week. Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., preschool children and their caregivers are invited to Storytime at the Crookston Public Library. Each week, they’ll explore a different theme through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel board stories, and a craft. No pre-registration is required, but they ask childcare providers and other groups to call ahead to ensure there will be adequate supplies at 281-4522.

Riverview Health’s monthly Type 2 Diabetes Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at RiverView Health in Meeting Room 1.  The group is led by RiverView Dietitian Darcy Larson, RD, LD and Kelsey Billing, RN, BSN. The Type 2 meetings are open to anyone with Type 2 diabetes and their family members.  New members are always welcome.
