CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOCKEY CELEBRATES SENIOR NIGHT WITH 10 GOALS IN WIN OVER MORRIS-BENSON

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey team scored 10 goals for the first time since 2011 in a 10-1 win over Morris-Benson on Senior Night in a game played at the Crookston Sports Center.

1st Period –
Crookston opened the scoring just 2:05 into the first period when Cassie Solheim sent a pass behind the net to Nora Peterson. Peterson curled along the far post and fired a shot past the blocker of Morris-Benson’s goaltender, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead with her team-leading tenth goal of the season. Raina Satrom doubled the Crookston lead just 3:50, later taking a Nora Peterson pass and redirecting the puck into the net, putting the hosts in front 2-0 with 11:05 to play in the opening period. Crookston goaltender Kailee Magsam stopped all seven shots she faced in the first period as the Pirates took their 2-0 lead into the first intermission. “Their goaltender is pretty good,” noted Crookston head coach Tim Moe after a dominant first period yielded just two goals. “She’s a big goaltender who stood in there pretty well, and they worked hard. We had to work for our two goals in that first period, but I thought it set the tone well for the second period.”

2nd Period –
Crookston unloaded in the second period with five goals, including a hat trick. Samantha Sanders opened the second period scoring with a goal just 32-seconds into the period giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. “We’re starting to have some hockey moves,” noted Moe. “The goals are getting nicer. Taylor Garrett did a nice job keeping the puck in at the point. She got a shot off on net, but Samantha (Sanders) was open in front and helped that puck into the net into the upper-corner there. It was a really pretty goal for Samantha.” Grace Fischer scored her first goal of the period with an assist from Dillynn Wallace with 12:04 to play in the period. Aleah Bienek added an unassisted, short-handed goal just 35-seconds later, increasing Crookston’s lead to 5-0. “It was great to get Aleah Bienek a goal,” said Moe. “She hasn’t scored in quite a while. She’s so close all the time, and it was a mistake on the goaltender’s part, but Aleah did a good job being ready and hammering that home.” Grace Fischer tallied her second goal of the period with 9:08 to play in the period. Fischer completed her second-period hat trick with 5:08 to play in the period blasting a one-timer from Kylee Meier, giving Crookston a 7-0 lead. “Kylee Meier did a fantastic job behind the net,” added Moe. “That ended up being a pretty easy goal for Grace (Fischer). I know Kylee wanted a goal on senior night and was working hard for it. I can’t say enough about how hard she was working tonight. She set up Grace quite a bit tonight.” Kailee Magsam stopped four shots in the second period as the Pirates took a 7-0 advantage into the final period. “Kailee Magsam stood in the net with confidence tonight,” added Moe. “She’s improved. I’m proud of her effort here tonight.”

3rd Period –
Morris-Benson opened the third-period scoring when Taryn Picht found the net trimming the Tigers’ deficit down to 7-1 with 15:58 to play in the final period. Crookston answered back with a goal scored by Raina Satrom, her second of the night, assisted by MacKenze Epema with 10:46 to play. “Both (Raina Satrom) and Nora (Peterson) had two goals tonight,” noted Moe. “We were trying to limit their ice time tonight. They weren’t the ones we wanted to score goals tonight, but we haven’t scored enough goals this season to worry about sharing the scoring chances, but we were trying to get that third and fourth group out there as much as possible in the final period because they were working hard and generating things. All the lines were generating offense.” Breck Fugleberg scored the Pirates lone powerplay goal of the night with 7:05 to play assisted by Samantha Sanders and Catherine Tiedemann. “We weren’t doing anything special in the third period,” explained Moe. “Breck (Fugleberg) got the puck to the net, and it found a way to sneak through.” Nora Peterson, who scored the first goal of the night, would also tally the final goal of the game with an unassisted, short-handed goal with 3:28 to play closing out Crookston’s 10-1 win. “It’s much better to be on this side of running time rather than the opposite side,” added Moe. “We know where Morris-Benson is at because we’ve been there. It’s been a long time since we’ve scored ten goals in a game. It’s nice to win a game and play everybody the entire game. I’m really happy with our effort, and you have to tip your hat to Morris-Benson because they played hard the entire game.”

Crookston improves to 8-11 on the year. The Pirates return to the ice on Saturday when Crookston hosts Prarie Centre at 2 P.M. Morris-Benson drops to 0-17-1.
