The Crookston Pirate Baseball team won the first game 13-1 behind a solid Gavyn Hlucny pitching performance, but the Thief River Falls Prowlers bounced back to win the second game 14-7 to split a Section 8AA doubleheader played in Thief River Falls.
FIRST INNING-
Crookston’s Greyson Ecker reached on an error with one out, and Gavyn Hlucny singled to score Ecker for a 1-0 lead. Hlucny stole second base and scored on an Isaiah Donarski single for a 2-0 lead. After an out, Cody Demarais singled, Nolan Cassavant walked, and Tarek Siegle singled to left field to knock in two more runs for a 4-0 lead to start the game.
Thief River Falls started the bottom of the inning with a walk before the next three batters were retired.
SECOND INNING-
Crookston’s Ecker doubled with one out before the next two batters were retired.
Thief Rive Falls led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and after two outs, they doubled. Crookston’s Hlucny got a big strikeout to get out of the jam and the Pirates held on to a 4-0 lead.
THIRD INNING –
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
Thief River Falls’ first two batters were retired before Crookston committed an error. The next batter singled and a run scored, and the Prowlers trailed 4-1 after three innings.
FOURTH INNING-
Crookston answered in a big way when Davin Janek was hit by a pitch. Dexter Janek and Ecker singled to load the bases. Donarski singled to score two runs with two outs, and the Pirates led 6-1.
Thief River Falls started the bottom of the inning with a single before a double play and a flyout, and the Pirates took a 6-1 lead into the fifth inning.
FIFTH INNING-
The first two Crookston batters were retired before Davin Janek singled and scored when his brother Dexter singled for a 7-1 lead. Ecker followed with a two-run home run to give the Pirates a 9-1 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Hlucny continued his outstanding pitching as he got a strikeout and two groundouts to retire TRF in a 1-2-3 fashion.
SIXTH INNING-
Crookston’s Cody Demarais singled with one out before the next two batters struck out.
Hlucny mowed the Prowlers down in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning with a strikeout, ground out and a fly out.
SEVENTH INNING-
Crookston’s Dexter Janek singled with one out before Ecker and Hlucny walked to load the bases. Donarski knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 10-1 lead with two outs. Lucas Perala was hit by a pitch before Demarais singled in two runs for a 12-1 lead. Cassavant singled to score a run for a 13-1 lead.
Crookston’s Hlucny continued his impressive performance as he retired TRF in 1-2-3 fashion with a pair of fly outs and a ground out and Crookston won the first game 13-1.

Game 2
FIRST INNING-
Crookston’s Dexter Janek started the game with a single, and after two outs, Donarski singled to score Janek for a 1-0 lead. Cody Demarais singled, Nolan Cassavant walked. Davin Janek singled to score a run. Tarek Siegle doubled to score two runs for a 4-0 lead. Aiden Delage followed with a single to knock in a run, and the Pirates led 5-0.
Thief River Falls answered in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off single. After an out, the Prowlers had a single, double, and singled to get within a 5-3 deficit.
SECOND INNING-
Isaiah Donarski had a one-out single and after a strikeout, Cassavant reached on an error that allowed a run to score for a 6-3 lead.
TRF’s Gonsorowski had a one-out single, Nelson followed with a double to score a run to get within a 6-4 deficit. After a single, the Prowlers scored a run on an error on a pickoff attempt to get within 6-5 deficit.
THIRD INNING –
TRF singled and the next batter was hit by a pitch. After an out, the Prowlers had a pair of singles to score three runs for an 8-6 lead. A wild pitch allowed a run to score and a double scored another run for a 10-6 lead. The Pirates made a pitching change and a run scored on a dropped third strike and throw to first base to get the out. The Prowlers followed with a single, walk, and single to score two more runs for a 13-6 lead.
FOURTH INNING-
Crookston answered in the fourth inning with a Demarais single. After a strikeout, Davin Janek reached on an error and a run scored to bring the Pirates within a 13-7 deficit.
The first two TRF batters were retired before a Nelson double. The next batter struck out and the inning was over.
FIFTH INNING-
Crookston’s Donarski walked with one out and Demarais singled. The next two batters were retired.
Thief River Falls started the bottom of the inning with a single. After an out, they had a singled and a double to score a run for a 14-7 lead.
SIXTH INNING-
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
TRF had bases loaded with one out after a hit batter and two walks, but the next two batters were retired.
SEVENTH INNING-
Crookston’s Ecker and Donarski walked and with two outs, Cassavant singled to score a run and the Pirates trailed 14-8. After a walk, the next batter grounded out and the game was over as Thief River Falls won 14-8 to earn a split in the doubleheader.
