TURNOVERS HURT PIRATE BOY’S BASKETBALL IN LOSS AT WARROAD

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team had to many turnovers and came up short in a 63-53 loss to the Warroad Warriors in a Section 8AA Basketball game played in Warroad.

Warroad’s Isaac Falk-Stoskopf scored the first points of the game before Crookston answered with an 8-0 run with Jack Garmen making a three-pointer from the corner for a 3-2 lead.  Nick Garmen, the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball career made three-point leader, followed with a three-pointer from the top of the key and Brady Butt scored on a nice move inside to give Crookston an 8-2 lead three minutes into the game. “I thought we were playing alright early,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “He made some shots early and that was nice.” Warroad answered with back-to-back Jett Shoen three-pointers to tie the game, the only tie of the game, at 8-8.  Crookston answered with a basket from Walker Winjum and a free throw from Caden Osborn for a three-point lead.  Crookston started to get careless with the ball and led 3-10 with 10 minutes left in the half when the turnover bug bit the team.  Warroad took advantage of the Pirate miscues and went on a 10-0 run behind two more three-pointers from Schoen for a 20-13 lead.  “We’re obviously not a good passing team right now,” said Coach Garmen. “We have to take care of the ball better and hit our buddies in good spots.  We would have had some good looks if we would have made the pass.”  The Warriors kept the lead in the two or three possession area for the rest of the half and took a 30-24 lead into halftime.  “I thought we were there even though we didn’t play great in the half,” said Coach Garmen. “We needed to shore up some things and Warroad made some plays and shots with #20 (Shoen) making four three’s.”

Crookston had a nice start to the second half behind a 7-3 run with Osborn scoring all seven of the Pirate points and Warroad’s lead was 33-31.  Warroad countered with a 7-0 run with the fifth three pointer of the game from Shoen and a 40-31 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.  Warroad led 51-44 with six minutes left in the game when Nick Garmen took over and scored four straight points and Osborn had an offensive rebound and basket to bring Crookston within a 51-50 deficit.  Crookston caught the turnover bug again and Warroad took advantage by ending the final four minutes of the game on a 12-3 run with seven of the points coming at the free throw line and the Warriors held on for the 63-53 victory.  “We had some lapses and didn’t shoot very well tonight,” said Coach Garmen. “Nothing is coming easy for us and we have to be spot on perfect and we weren’t tonight. We gave up a couple offensive rebounds off missed free throws late and that hurt.  We have to be more physical.  Give credit to Warroad, they are senior dominated and have some nice players and they will be in the mix and have some talent.”
Crookston drops to 6-10 on the year and will travel to Grand Forks to play East Grand Forks Sacred Heart in the Lions Shootout at Grand Forks Central High School on Saturday.  Warroad improves to 9-9 on the year.
