CROOKSTON PIRATE BOY’S AND GIRL’S GOLF TEAMS ADVANCE TO SECTIONS

The Crookston Pirates Girl’s golf team shot a 388 to win their event while Crookston’s boys tied for second place with a 334, ensuring both teams will advance to the Section 8AA Meet, in the Section 8AA North Sub-Section Meet that will be played at the Warroad Estates Golf Course. The Pirate girls bested Roseau by eight strokes with Joslynn Leach’s 86 earning her medalist honors. Warroad had the top boys team with a score of 329, five strokes better than both Crookston and Roseau. Hampton Slukynsky and Jayson Shangabay, both of Warroad, were co-medalists after carding 76s.

CROOKSTON GIRLS – The Crookston girls were the top in the Sub-Section led by the meet’s medalist. Joslynn Leach took first place with an 86. “Joslynn was able to lower her score quite a bit (from last week’s Pre-Sub-Section Meet),” said Crookston head coach Jeff Perreault. “That was a big difference. She had a really nice day. Overall, she was striking the ball really nicely today. With a course in the condition that it was, it was much soggier than it was a week ago when we played it, I have to give her credit. All the coaches were talking while we were walking around and saying I don’t think we’ll see any scores in the 80s from the girls today, but she was, and she was the only one.” Dani Boyle turned in the Pirates’ second-best score of a 95, good for fifth place in the tournament. “Dani did manage to shave some strokes off of her practice round here one week ago,” said Perreault. “That really comes down to one hole where she really struggled. A par three where she had some struggles. Today, she played okay. She found herself in some tough spots and a lot of girls did that today.” Hannah Street carded a 102 for Crookston’s third score. “She’s just been really consistent,” said Perreault. “We missed her score in that practice round. She doesn’t get in a lot of trouble and plays pretty straight. Gets around the greens and then makes good decisions around the greens.” Bailey Cameron rounded out the Pirates top-four scores with her 105. “Bailey was not feeling it,” explained Perreault. “She did have one hole, a par three, the same on Dani struggled with a week ago, Bailey posted a 10. When you do that as a varsity golfer, you feel like the world is ending. You look at the rest of her scorecard she didn’t play that poorly and did a lot of good things.” Sophia Rezac and Hannah Brouse each shot 111 concluding Crookston’s Sub-Section meet. “When you advance as a team, that’s everybody,” noted Perreault. The Pirates now will have a week to prepare for the Section Meet. “It’s going to be a combination of a couple of things,” explained Perreault. “The next two practices are going to be a lot of hardcore short game stuff, and I think that’s going to pay off for us. Looking at the girls’ score, I think it’s going to benefit our scores, working around the greens.”

Those that qualified, including both of Crookston’s gold teams advance in the Section 8AA Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, June 3 and 4 at the Bemidji Town and Country Golf Club where they play two rounds of 18 holes and total the scores for advancement to State.

CROOKSTON BOYS –
The Crookston Pirate Boys finished sixteen strokes clear of failing to qualify for the Section meet as a team after finishing tied for second. Trey Christopherson led the way for the Pirates turning in an 81 which was good for fourth place in the field. “Really for (Trey) the big thing was he played the back-nine not that great, but shot a 37 on the front nine today,” explained Crookston head coach Steve Kofoed. “For him to be able to go out and shoot an 81 today, he was happy with that. Especially with the way he started with three three-putts in a row.”  Jack Ricord shot an 83 for the Pirates placing him fifth in the Sub-Section Meet. “When we were here for the pre-Sub-Section, Jack had just an awful start one week ago so he came in knowing if he could get a quick start today he could be able to get around Warroad without any huge issues,” noted Kofoed. “He started with a birdie and just got himself rolling. He was very happy with the way he was playing.” Jaxon Wang and Quinn Westlake both shot 85s to round out Crookston’s top four scores. “(Quinn) had a very, very similar score his last time here,” said Kofoed. “He got off to a really good start. He tripled number fifteen but was able to rally and close out the round. For him to be able to close out the front nine with some pars and bogeys means he found something with his ball striking. (Jaxon) was very, very similar. If you just look at his last three or four rounds, he’s been starting out with one big number. They were both fighting to break 90, and we knew if they were both able to do that it would be huge for us.” Brock Heppner broke 100 with his 97. Ben Andringa was the final Pirate in the clubhouse with his 106. “Obviously with last year not making the Section Tournament as a team, this was the number one goal for us as a group,” said Kofoed. “We have the opportunity to get six guys on Bemidji and make a run. That’s kind of what Pirates golf has been all about since I’ve been here. Knowing coming into Warroad this was a golf course that we had to hit quality tee shots, we did and were able to get the job done and advance.”
