CROOKSTON PIRATE SOFTBALL SWEPT BY ROSEAU RAMS

The Crookston Pirate Softball team hung tough early, but a big sixth inning from Roseau broke the game open and gave them a 16-6 victory. Game two was a similar story as the Pirates battled to stay in the game before a big sixth inning allowed the Rams to reach the 10-run rule with a 15-5 victory.

GAME ONE –
In the first inning, Kenze Epema reached base on an error to give the Pirates their first baserunner. Amber Cymbaluk and Jenna Coauette hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. Emily Bowman got two runs in on a groundout to give the Pirates an early 2-0 lead.
Roseau started their first inning with consecutive singles before two more singles brought in a total of three runs to give the Rams the 3-2 lead after one inning.

Roseau added onto their lead in the second inning after the leadoff hitter tripled, and a ground ball error brought her in to score.

Crookston got a back on the board and tied the game in the third inning. Addie Fee singled, stole second base, and got to third on a ground out. Amber Cymbaluk drove her in on a single to left field. Jenna Coauette then drove in Cymbaluk with her own single to left field to tie the game at 4-4.
A hit by pitch and single started the inning for the Rams in the third. The Pirates caught a runner stealing home before a single put runners back on the corners. Roseau was not done in the inning as a fielder’s choice was the second out, but it brought in another run. A single and double scored two more runs and gave the Rams an 8-4 lead.

After a scoreless inning for the Pirates, Roseau added on one more run in the fourth. A leadoff double was advanced to third on a flyball, and a one-out single brought in the run.

The Pirates scored again in the fifth inning. Addie Fee collected another single to lead off. Kenze Epema reached on a fielder’s choice, and Fee was safe at second. After the first out, Jenna Coauette doubled to the fence to score Fee. The Pirates tried to also score Epema from first, but she was tagged out at the plate.
The Rams loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but Coauette worked out of trouble and kept the score at 9-5.

The Pirates inched closer in the sixth inning. Reese Swanson doubled to begin the inning. She got to third on a groundout and scored on Emilee Tate’s RBI double. Addie Fee picked up another hit to get runners on the corners, but the Pirates only managed one run in the inning as they cut the deficit to 9-6.
Roseau’s offense clicked in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored seven runs. A double and two walks for the Rams loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly scored a run on the second out of the inning. And then the Pirates could not find the last out. A walk re-loaded the bases, and then a hit batter and another walk brought in two runs. The next batter reached an error, and all three baserunners scored on the play to give Roseau a 15-6 lead. Needing another run to reach the ten-run rule, A single scored the runner from third, and Roseau won the first game of the doubleheader by a 16-6 score.

GAME TWO –
Crookston got things going in the first inning with a leadoff single from Addie Fee and a Kenze Epema walk, but they could not get a big hit and went scoreless in the first inning.
Roseau got off to a good start in the bottom of the inning. Their leadoff hitter singled and came around to score on the next batter’s double.  The batter was also able to score on the play due to an error. A single got the next Rams batter on, and after an out, a double and a single brought in the other two runs in the inning to give Roseau a 4-0 lead.

Crookston answered as they cut the lead in half, getting a couple of runs in the second. An error and walk started the inning, and then Julia Lallier got the Pirates on the board with an RBI single. A hit batter got another runner on before Addie Fee singled home another Pirate. They tried to score another on Fee’s single, but she was thrown out at the plate.
Danielle Kresl retired the Rams to keep the game at a 4-2 score in the bottom of the second.

Roseau was able to get the next run on the board in the third inning. The leadoff hitter reached on a single and came all the way around the bases to score on the same play via an error to make it 5-2.

Roseau added on some insurance runs in the fourth inning, scoring three more times. The first two batters reached on walks. A single scored a run, and an error allowed two runners to get into scoring position. A groundout scored the second run of the inning, and that was followed by a single to score the third run of the inning to give the Rams an 8-2 lead.

Crookston answered back with a couple of more runs in the top of the fifth. With one out, Amber Cymbaluk doubled to get the Pirates started. The next batter, Jenna Coauette, ripped a single into center field to score Cymbaluk from second. Two batters later, with two outs, Reese Swanson doubled to center field to score Coauette and cut the Roseau lead to 8-4.
Roseau was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning as another batter led off with a base hit and scored on the same play due to some defensive miscues. After five innings, the Rams led 9-4.

Crookston continued to fight as they scrapped across another run in the sixth inning to get it back to a four-run deficit. Julia Lallier reached on a leadoff walk, stole second, and got to third on a groundout. Addie Fee collected another RBI hit on the day as she singled to left field to score Lallier and make it 9-5.
Like the first game, the Rams got a big sixth inning to break the game open and reach the ten-run rule. A leadoff walked got to second on a stolen base and to third on a groundout. A single scored the first run of the inning. After a single and hit batter loaded the bases, a runner scored on a passed ball. The next three batters singled, doubled, and singled to bring in four more runs and gave the Rams a victory in game two by a score of 15-5.  Crookston is now 0-10 on the season and will be at Fosston to take on East Polk on Tuesday. Roseau has won three games in a row to improve to 4-4 on the year, and they’ll host Badger-Greenbush-Middle River tomorrow.
