Crookston Pirate Volleyball swept by RLCC

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team played a make-up game as they traveled to Oklee to play the Red Lake County Central Mustangs and lost 3-0 on Friday afternoon.

FIRST SET
Crookston got behind 4-1 and Red Lake County Central followed with a 6-1 run on some solid serving for a 10-2 lead. The teams played even the rest of the way and the Mustangs cruised to a 25-12 victory. “We started slow,” said Pirate Coach Katie Morgan. “I don’t know if it was the early start time or what the deal was, but we struggled early on.”

SECOND SET
Red Lake County Central started the set on a 4-0 run. Rilynn Aubol had some solid play for Crookston as the teams went back and forth for a few points before the Mustangs took a 15-6 lead. RLCC jumped on the Pirates the rest of the set while outscoring the Pirates 10-4 to win the set 25-10 for a 2-0 lead in the match. “Rilynn played great in the second set and the match,” said Coach Morgan. “We continue to struggle on passing and that showed today.”

THIRD SET
In the third set, RLCC jumped out to a 10-1 lead. Crookston settled down and picked up their play as they outscored the Mustangs 4-3 over the next seven points to get within a 13-4 deficit. The teams exchanged points before the Mustangs hit an attack off a Pirate blocker for a kill and a 15-5 lead. The Mustangs followed with an ace for a 16-5 lead. The teams exchanged points, and RLCC had an 18-8 lead. Crookston served out of bounds, and the Mustangs followed with an ace for a 20-8 lead. Crookston hit into the net and had a passing error before Mustangs had a kill for a 23-8 lead. After a long rally, the Mustangs snuck an attack down the line for a 24-8 lead and ended the match with a service ace for a 25-8 victory to win the match 3-0. “It was disappointing today, especially after we played well last night against East Grand Forks,” said Coach Morgan. “We will have a big week next week and will have to play better.”

Crookston drops to 0-13 on the year and will host Northome/Kelliher on Monday. Red Lake County Central improves to 5-12.
