The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team played the first two sets close, but they ultimately fell to the Warroad Warriors by a score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-15) in a match played in Warroad.
FIRST SET–
The first set was tied at one, two, and three before an Emma LaPlante kill started a 3-0 run for Crookston. Warroad responded with a 3-0 run to tie it up at 6-6. Warroad went on another 3-0 run, which included an Aura Moyer ace to give Warroad a 9-7 lead. A few points later, Kristine Bernd got a kill to start a 3-0 run for Crookston, making it 12-11 Warroad. The Warriors responded with a 3-0 run, including two aces from Katherine Schreiner to make it 15-11, and two points later, Warroad went on a 6-0 run to make it 21-13. Bernd got her second kill of the set to end the Warroad run and got an ace on the next serve to make it 21-15. LaPlante got a kill two points later to make it 22-16. Moyer got a kill to make it 23-16 before Crookston started a 4-0 run kickstarted by a Danielle Kresl kill. LaPlante got two aces before Warroad won the last two points to take the first set.
SECOND SET
Warroad started the set, winning five of the first six points before Bernd got a kill and Rhianna Moore got a block to make it 5-3. Warroad won five of the following six points before Mackenzie Funk got a kill. Warroad went on a 3-0 run with two Pyper Flick aces to make it 14-7. Crookston responded by winning eight of the following nine points, including a Makenna Kopeck ace to tie the set up at 15-15. Warroad won two points before LaPlante got a kill to make it 17-16. Two points later, Crookston started a 5-0 run with great serve play from Joey Nesseth and a block from Rhianna Moore. Crookston had the lead 21-18, but Warroad tied it up at 21-21 with kills from Moyer and Harlie Corneliusen. Warroad’s Alexis Anthony got an ace two points later to make it 23-21. Crookston tied it up at 23-23 before Warroad won the last two points to take the second set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
THIRD SET
Warroad started the third set winning six of the first seven points. Bernd got an ace two points later to make it 6-3 Warroad. The Warriors won two points, and then the Pirates won two points before Warroad went on a 3-0 run that included two Moyer kills. Crookston got a point before Warroad went on a 5-0 run to make it 16-6. Crookston went on a 5-0 run, including two Kresl aces, to make it 16-11. Five points later, LaPlante got a kill to make it 19-14. Warroad went on a 4-0 run to make it 23-14. Crookston got one more point before the Warriors won the last two to win the third set and the match 3-0.
Crookston falls to 2-15 on the season and head to East Grand Forks on Thursday. Warroad improves to 6-13.
