Crookston Pirate Wrestling gives up to many open weights in loss to Frazee in Section 8A tourney

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team had six open weights and trailed 36-0 before the match started and Frazee cruised to a 66-12 victory in the Section 8A Team Wrestling quarterfinals at the Frazee High School gymnasium.

Crookston had six open weights going into the match. That gave Frazee 36 points before the match started so the Pirates knew their chances to win were slim.
Frazee won by forfeit at 107 pounds and won by pin at 114 and 121 pounds for an 18-0 lead. Crookston was open at the next three weights and Frazee to a 36-0 lead. At 145 pounds, Jose Arriaga had a solid match. He trailed 3-0 after being taken down but got an escape and a takedown for a 4-3 lead with 46 seconds left in the first period. Frazee’s Hunter Malone countered with an escape and a takedown for a 7-4 lead at the end of the first period. In the second period, Arriaga gave up an escape but countered with a takedown to get within an 8-7 deficit. Frazee’s Malone countered with an escape and a takedown for a 12-7 lead with 59 seconds left in the period. 29 seconds later Malone won by a pin at 3:30.
Crookston picked up their first win of the match at 152 pounds when Gavyn Hlucny came out strong and picked up three points with a takedown and a few seconds later won by a pin at 38 seconds to get the Pirates within a 42-6 deficit. Frazee won the next four matches with two pins and two forfeits and had a 66-6 lead going into the heavyweight match. Crookston’s Riley Helgeson took a 3-0 lead with a takedown over a minute into the match and took a 3-0 lead into the second period. Riley got an escape for a 4-0 lead and got a pin a few seconds later at 2:40 to win his match, but Crookston lost the team portion 66-12.

Crookston wraps up the team season and will get ready for the Section 8A Individual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 22 at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
