Detroit Lakes handed the Crookston Pirates boys hockey team their first loss of the season with a 4-1 win at Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes.
FIRST PERIOD
Crookston got off to a fast start with a lot of offensive zone time and getting a couple of shots on net. Crookston would get on the scoreboard first when Jackson Reese found Masen Reitmeier out in front, who backhanded one into the net to put the Pirates up 1-0 just over five minutes into the game. Detroit Lakes would put the pressure on after the Pirates goal, creating multiple chances, but Parker Kelly was able to turn away the Lakers chances. With about four and a half minutes left in the period, Detroit Lakes’ Carter Whitworth scored to tie things up at one apiece. Detroit Lakes continued the pressure throughout the end of the period, but the Pirates defense was able to block shots, and Kelly made a spectacular save, sprawling out and kicking out his leg to deny the Lakers to add to their lead. Detroit Lakes and Crookston would head to the first intermission tied at 1.
SECOND PERIOD
Detroit Lakes started the second period with the same intensity as the first, creating many chances in their offensive zone. Parker Kelly made back-to-back saves a few minutes into the period as Detroit Lakes had two great opportunities to break the tie, but Kelly denied both shots. A few minutes later, Crookston would head to the power play after the Pirates put a couple of shots on net. Detroit Lakes killed the power play to keep it tied at 1. Detroit Lakes’s Cole Deraney created a breakaway after a tape-to-tape pass from Easton Wahl. Deraney made a nice move and fired the puck into the net to break the 1-1 tie. After the goal, Grayson Ecker had an opportunity out in front, and his shot barely missed the net wide. Deraney once again had a chance in front of the crease as the puck was loose out in front with the net mouth open, but his shot went just wide of the net as their lead remained at 2-1. Crookston went to the power play right before the period ended with just 21 seconds left. The period would end with Detroit Lakes up 2-1 heading to the third.
THIRD PERIOD
Crookston started the period with 1:39 of power play time. Still, they couldn’t find the back of the net as Lakers freshman goaltender Griffin Lindberg was able to keep Crookston out of the net with the help of his penalty kill, blocking multiple Crookston shot attempts. Later in the period, Detroit Lakes’ Kash Benson got his first goal of the night as Dalton Songstad fired a pass to Benson from the corner, who scored to give Detroit Lakes a 3-1 lead. Two minutes later, Cole Deraney scored his second goal of the game after Will Cymbaluk brought the puck into the Lakers offensive zone and dropped it off for Deraney to give Detroit Lakes a 4-1 lead. Detroit Lakes would head to the power play a few minutes later, but Crookston was able to kill it off. Detroit Lakes would get a couple of more shots on frame, but Kelly continued his outstanding play in the crease with more saves to keep it at 4-1, which is what the final score would be as Detroit Lakes gets the win on their home ice.
Crookston falls to 4-1 on the year and will travel to Grafton/Park River on Tuesday. Detroit Lakes improves to 3-4 on the season and will play Breckenridge/Wahpeton on Thursday.
