BARNESVILLE USES BIG INNING TO BEAT PIRATE SOFTBALL

The Crookston Pirate Softball team gave up seven runs in the second inning, and that was the difference as the Barnesville Trojans won 9-4 in a Section 8AA matchup in Barnesville.

FIRST INNING
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion to start the game with two strikeouts and a ground out. Barnesville got things going in the bottom of the inning with a single and two stolen bases. A run scored on a ground out, and the Trojans led 1-0.

SECOND INNING
Crookston answered in the top of the inning when Reese Swanson walked and Kambelle Freije singled. Swanson stole third base and scored on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
The tie didn’t last long, as Barnesville exploded in the second inning. The first two batters walked before a double. The next batter singled, and another Trojan reached on an error. The next batter doubled, followed by a single, a walk, a hit batter, and another single, and the Trojans scored eight runs for an 8-1 lead.

THIRD INNING
Maddi Bruggeman reached on an error with one out, but the next two batters were retired.
Barnesville’s first two batters were retired. After a single, the next batter grounded out.

FOURTH INNING
Crookston chipped away at the deficit in the fourth inning with a leadoff single by Freije. After an out, Cassie Solheim tripled to score a run. Solheim scored on a ground out, and the Pirates trailed 8-3.
Barnesville was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a strikeout, ground out, and a fly out.

FIFTH INNING –
Crookston continued to battle back as Emily Bowman led off with a single before stealing second and third base before scoring on a Rilynn Aubol single to get within an 8-4 deficit.
Barnesville answered in the bottom of the inning when the leadoff batter walked and stole two bases before scoring on a single for a 9-4 lead.

SIXTH INNING –
Crookston’s first two batters were retired on ground outs. Carley Knutson singled but was out on a fielder’s choice.
Barnesville was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.

SEVENTH INNING –
Emily Bowman singled and stole second base to start the inning. After Bowman was caught stealing at third base, the next two batters grounded out, and Barnesville won the game 9-4.

Crookston drops to 2-10 on the year and will travel to East Grand Forks for a doubleheader on Monday.
