The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team is sending six wrestlers to the Minnesota State High School League Class A Individual Wrestling tournament after they had five champions and won true second finish.
Pirate champions were Gavyn Hlucny (126), Ethan Bowman (145), Carter Coauette (152), Hunter Knutson (182), and Ethan Boll (220).
The Pirate True Second finish was Evin Trudeau (113).
The State Individual tournament will be Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4 at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul.
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES –Â
Gavyn Hlucny at 126 pounds –Â
Gavyn Hlucny took on Zach Hendrickson of United North Central. Â Hlucny scored the first points of the match after a takedown with 10 seconds left in the first period. Â In the second period, Hlucny scored two more points on a reversal and seven seconds later added three nearfall points for a 7-0 lead. Â In the third period, Hlucny started down and scored two more points on a reversal six seconds into the period and held on the rest of the way for a 9-0 victory to advance back to the Minnesota State Individual Wrestling tournament for the second straight year.
Ethan Bowman at 145 pounds –
Ethan Bowman took on Hank Tellers of United North Central. Â After a scoreless first period, Bowman scored three neafall points for a 3-0 lead 30 seconds into the second period. Â Bowman took over in the third period and added two points on a takedown for a 5-0 lead. Â 14 seconds later Bowman scored three nearfall points for an 8-0 lead with 70 seconds left in the match. Â Bowman was awarded one point for the third caution against Tellers and led 9-0 with 68 seconds left in the match. Â There wasn’t any scoring the rest of the way and Ethan became the second Pirate wrestler to advance to the state tournament.
Carter Coauette at 152 pounds –
Carter Coauette took on Tyler Moe of Frazee. Â There was no scoring in the first period. Â There wasn’t any scoiring in the second period until Coauette scored three nearfall points with 30 seconds left in the period for a 3-0 lead. Â Coauette added another point on an escape with 1:29 left in the match. 10 seconds later, Coauette received another point, this time a penalty point for a 5-0 lead. Â Moe received a penalty point at the end of the match and Coauette won 5-1 to advance back to the State Tournament.
Hunter Knutson at 182 pounds –
Hunter Knutson took on Max Rue of Frazee. Â The first period was scoreless. Â The second period was scoreless until Rue scored a point on an escape for a 1-0 lead. Â Knutson was awarded a penalty point at the end of the second period and the match was tied 1-1 going into third period. Â Knutson scored on an escape six seconds into the third period and followed with a takedown for two more points for a 4-1 lead with 1:29 left. Â Knutson controlled the match the rest of the way and won 4-1 to win the championship.
Ethan Boll at 220 pounds –
Ethan Boll took on Jordan Kroll of Barnesville. Boll came out strong with a takedown six seconds into the match. Boll gave up an escape and followed with another takedown for a 4-1 lead. Boll gave up another escape before recording his third takedown in 29 seconds. After giving up an escape, Boll followed with another takedown. Ethan allowed another escape and followed with another takedown, and added three nearfall points for a 13-4 lead at the end of the first period.
Kroll started the second period with an escape before Boll countered with a takedown over a minute later and followed with three nearfall points for an 18-5 lead at the end of the period.Â
Boll started the third period with a takedown and won by a tech fall (20-5) at 4:11 to win the championship.
TRUE SECOND MATCHES –Â
Evin Trudeau at 113 pounds –Â
Evin Trudeau took on Dominick Neisen of Mahnomen/Waubun and got behind 4-0 through the first two periods, but Trudeau scored an escape and followed with a takedown to get within a 4-3 deficit with 15 seconds left in the match. Â Evin wasn’t able to score in the final seconds and Neisen held on for a 4-3 victory. Â With the loss, Trudeau will have a True Second match against Rhett Anderson for a trip to the state tournament.
In the True Second match, Evin took on Rhett Anderson of United North Central and started the match as the aggresor. Â He scored two points on a takedown 23 seconds into the match and 19 second later he won the match by a pin to advance to the state tournament, making it six Pirate wrestlers advancing to state.
