The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team was missing one wrestler because of a DQ on Friday and one that was sick, and it came back to hurt them in a 42-39 loss to the Fosston/Bagley Brawlers in a Section 8A dual at the Crookston High School gymnasium tonight.

Fosston/Bagley’s strength in their lineup is at the lower weights, and they showed it right away with two pins in 23 and 13 seconds, respectively, for a 12-0 lead.
Crookston’s Evin Trudeau got his team on the board as he trailed 2-0 in the first period and had a reversal to tie the match at 2-2 going into the second period. In the second period, Trudeau scored the only points and took a 4-2 lead into the third. Trudeau continued to wrestle a great match, scored two more points on a takedown, and won the match 6-2.
At 126 pounds, Gavyn Hlucny took a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first period. Hlucny added two more points with a reversal to start the second period. He continued to control the match and won by a pin late in the second period.
Crookston was open at 132 pounds, and Fosston/Bagley’s Zach Thompson jumped out to a 9-1 lead after the first period and won by a pin early in the second at 138 pounds for a 24-9 lead.
At 145 pounds, Casey Weiland came out strong and won by a pin in the first period to bring the Pirates within a 24-15 deficit. Fosston/Bagley responded with a pin in 53 seconds in the 152-pound match for a 30-15 lead. Crookston’s Layten Fuentes responded with a pin with nine seconds left in the first period. Carter Coauette won by a forfeit at 170 pounds to bring the Pirates within a 30-27 deficit.
At 182 pounds, Fosston/Bagley’s Kaden Sanford had the biggest win of the night as he won by a pin with three seconds left in the first period to give his team a 36-27 lead. Crookston was open at 195 pounds, and the Brawlers took a 42-27 lead giving them the dual victory with two matches remaining.
Ethan Boll won by a pin in 47 seconds at 220 pounds, and Riley Helgeson had a great match and won by a pin in the second period for his third career victory. Helgeson improves to 3-4 on the year in his first year of wrestling, but Fosston/Bagley won the match 42-39.
Crookston drops to 12-3 on the year and will host Thief River Falls on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
