PIRATE BOYS HOCKEY HANGS ON TO BEAT GREENWAY 4-3

The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team played a hard-fought battle against the Greenway Raiders, picking up the 4-3 win at Hodgins-Berardo Arena in Coleraine. 

FIRST PERIOD
In the first minute of the game, Crookston would go a man down as the Pirates were called for a penalty, sending the Raiders to the power play. On the power play, Jace Kammeier fired his shot into the net to give Greenway an early 1-0 lead. Crookston’s Greyson Ecker would get the Pirates first shot on goal about five minutes into the period, but his attempt would be saved. Later in the period, Crookston would get called for another penalty as the Raiders went back to the power play. The Pirates were able to kill it off to keep it a one-goal deficit. Crookston would head to the power play right after killing off the penalty to give themselves their first man advantage of the game. The Pirates got a few shots on goal but were kept off the scoreboard. The teams would head into the first intermission with Greenway leading 1-0. 

SECOND PERIOD
In the second, Crookston was able to generate some offense as they got a few shots to the net early, including a redirection from Lucas Miller. Later in the period, Carter Trudeau was able to fire the puck into the net to tie the game at one. Later on,
Trudeau struck again as he was able to fire the perfect shot to beat the goalie and give Crookston a 2-1 lead. Crookston would ride the momentum of their Captain’s goals as Lucas Miller took a pass from Jackson Reese in front of the net and was able to find the back of the net to make it 3-1. Crookston and Greenway would get called for coincidental minor penalties before the period ended. Crookston would hold a 3-1 lead heading into the third. 

THIRD PERIOD
Starting off the period, Crookston would get another goal as Blake Melsa sent a pass to the neutral zone, Greyson Ecker chipped it along to Jay Reese who sent a pass across to Garrett Fischer as Fischer buried the puck into the net to give Crookston a 4-1 lead. Greenway responded as Caiden Carpenter used a nice move to beat the defender and used the perfect shot to find the back of the net and make it 4-2. The Raiders were called for a penalty, which sent Crookston to the power play. The Pirates couldn’t add to their lead as the Raiders killed off the penalty. Later in the period, the Raiders would get another goal as Brayden Nielsen scored to cut the Pirates lead down to 4-3. The Raiders tried to tie the game but Parker Kelly stood tall in net as he was able to secure the win for Crookston, 4-3. 

Crookston improves to 11-9-0 on the year and will take on International Falls tomorrow on KROX. Greenway falls to 3-15-2 on the year and will play Red Lake Falls tomorrow.
