The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team was faced with a case of deja vu on Wednesday afternoon, as the Albert Lea Tigers beat the Pirates 3-2 in overtime at The Gardens in Warroad, giving the Pirates their second consecutive OT loss.
FIRST PERIOD
The first period started a little sluggish for both teams, with neither team recording a shot on goal in the first two minutes. After that, the Tigers started to get some offense flowing, testing Madi Abrams in net with 3 shots in the first minute, but Abrams stopped them all in their tracks. The third save led to a breakaway for Adley Vigness, but her snipe was stuffed by Tiger goaltender Sienna Murray. From there, the Tigers got the majority of offensive looks, including two power plays within minutes of each other, but the Pirate penalty kill stopped them both. Albert Lea got a third penalty in the final 1:14 of the period, but it would carry over into the second, as the Pirates were able to keep the first period scoreless.
SECOND PERIOD
The carried-over penalty turned out to be a blessing for the Tigers, as Morgan Goskeson scored with 2 seconds remaining on the penalty, opening the scoring for the Tigers at 1-0. The Pirates had an answer, however, as Peyton Demerais cashed in a rebound at 3:51 to even the game at a goal apiece. After the Pirates survived yet another Tiger power play, they got one of their own, and Adley Vigness rose to the task, sniping one past Murray to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. From there, the pace slowed significantly, with each team getting few looks on offense. It looked like the Pirates would take the 2-1 lead into the locker room, but with exactly 1 minute to go, Morgan Goskeson executed a brilliant breakaway, tying the game at 2 and sending the game into the third period at that score.
THIRD PERIOD
As the third period got started, the pace of play reverted back to the ways of the first period, where shots on goal were scarce and the speed was slower. The Pirates did commit their fifth penalty of the game, but successfully killed it off. However, they did get a power play that amounted to nothing for them. Both goaltenders stood tall, especially Madi Abrams, who made 3 saves in rapid succession in a crazy sequence. She would only record 2 more in the entire period as the defense around her stepped up. The Pirates got their third power play with 1:20 to go in the period, but were unable to score on it, and that meant that the ganme would be heading to overtime tied at 23 apiece.
OVERTIME
Crookston was hoping that the penalty carryover would help them just as it helped Albert Lea in the second period, but they were unable to get a shot on goal during that time. In fact, for the first 5:44 of the 8:00 overtime, neither team recorded a shot on goal. Crookston got their first, on a shot from Emma LaPlante, but Murray made the save. Then , with 21 seconds left, Albert Lea got their first shot on goal in overtime, and it was Morgan Goskeson, beating Abrams to secure a hat trick and beat the Pirates by a score of 3-2.
Crookston drops to 4-11 on the year, 0-3 at the Warroad Holiday Classic.
