The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team took a one goal lead late in regulation, but the North Shore (Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Duluth Marshall coop) Storm answered less than a minute later and scored 32 seconds into overtime to get a 3-2 victory on the second day of the Hockeytown Holiday Classic in Warroad.
FIRST PERIOD
It was a slow start for Crookston as North Shore had the first five shots on goal, but Madi Abrams stopped all the shots. Crookston had their first shot of the game when Christina Hershey stole the puck and flew down the ice. Hershey got by the North Shore defenseman and fired a wrist shot on net, but the Storm goalie made the save. Crookston kept the offensive pressure going as Emma LaPlante had a shot on goal with 6:16 remaining in the period as North Shore had a 7-2 shots on goal advantage.
It seemed Crookston picked up the play the rest of the period as they outshot North Shore 5-3 the rest of the way and the teams were scoreless after the first period.
SECOND PERIOD
Crookston had a solid start to the second period and had a couple of shots on goal before Emma LaPlante skated the puck back into the North Shore zone and left a pass back to Adley Vigness, who fired a wrist shot on goal from the middle of the circle. The puck hit off the goalie and somehow trickled into the net to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead 4:26 into the period.
Crookston had a few quality scoring chances the rest of the period, but couldn’t get one past the Storm goalie. North Shore’s Reese Costly had the puck behind the Pirate net and slid a pass into the slot as Hayden Bright fired a one-timer into the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 51 seconds left in the period.
The teams went into the second intermission tied at 1-1.
THIRD PERIOD
The third period saw a lot of back-and-forth and fewer shots on goal than the first two periods. Crookston took a 2-1 lead when Emma LaPlante had a shot go over the North Shore net, and it ricocheted off the boards to the side of the net. LaPlante grabbed the puck and fired a shot over the left shoulder of the goalie for the goal, and the one-goal lead with over three minutes remaining.
Less than a minute later, North Shore answered as they skated into the Pirate zone and after a shot on goal, the rebound bounced in front of the net and Reese Costly slapped the puck into the net to tie the game at 2-2 with less than three minutes remaining. Neither team was able to score in the final minutes to force overtime.
OVERTIME-
North Shore didn’t waste any time in overtime as they got a shot on goal and the rebound went behind the net. They got another shot on goal, and the rebound came out in front, and Costly was there again and fired a wrist shot into the net to give the Storm a 3-2 victory.
Crookston drops to 4-10 on the year and will take on Albert Lea on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. The game will be on KROX Radio. North Shore improves to 10-4 on the year.
