The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team won their first three matches of the season before coming short to two very good opponents in their final two matches of the day while going 3-2 at the Hillsboro/Central Valley dual tournament in Hillsboro, North Dakota.
Gavyn Hlucny won the 50th match of his career, while Ethan Bowman and Ethan Boll finished the day with five victories.
CROOKSTON VS GRAFTON –
Crookston opened the season with a convincing victory thanks to a mix of wins by pin, decision, and forfeit. The Pirates won five matches by pin (30 points), four matches by forfeit (24), and two by a decision on their way to a 60-15 victory over Grafton, North Dakota.
The match started at 106 pounds, and it was the first career varsity match for Crookston’s Mauricio Arriaga as he won by a pin with 12 seconds left in the first period to start the Pirates off with a 6-0 lead.
Chris Goodrich was next for the Pirates, and he won by a forfeit for a 12-0 lead. Grafton won the next three matches by a decision and two pins to take a 15-12 lead. Crookston dominated the match the rest of the way as Lucas Peral got the winning streak started at 138 pounds with a pin in the second period for an 18-15 lead. Ethan Bowman didn’t even break a sweat in his match at 145 pounds, as he won by a pin in 22 seconds. At 152 pounds, Casey Weiland won his match by a pin in the first period. Carter Coauette won by a forfeit before Jose Arriaga followed his younger brothers’ winning ways with a 7-1 victory at 170 pounds. After a double-forfeit at 185 pounds, Crookston won the next three matches by forfeit leading into the final match at heavyweight. Jesse Sanchez finished the match with a pin in 56 seconds, and Crookston won the match 60-15.
Crookston improves to 1-0 on the year.

CROOKSTON vs CENTRAL CASS –
In the second match of the day, it came down to the final individual match, and it came down to the final match at 120 pounds with an Evin Trudeau win by decision to give Crookston a 35-33 victory over Central Cass.
In North Dakota, they draw a weight out of a hat, and that is where the match starts, unlike Minnesota which starts at 106 pounds every match. In the Central Cass match, they started at 126 pounds.
Gavyn Hlucny gave the Pirates a great start with a win my a major decision for a 4-0 lead. Crookston was open at 132 pounds, and Central Cass won the ensuing match by a pin for a 12-4 lead.
Ethan Bowman got the Pirates back on track with a win by pin in the first period for the second straight match, and Casey Weiland won by a pin in 13 seconds to give Crookston a 16-12 lead. Carter Coauette won a hard-fought six-minute match with a 13-8 victory for a 19-12 lead. Central Cass won the next match by pin and then won by a forfeit to take a 24-19 lead.
Hunter Knutson had a solid six-minute performance for a victory by a 3-0 decision, and Ethan Boll won by a pin in 45 seconds to give the Pirates a 28-24 lead. Central Cass won the next two matches by a pin and decision to take a 33-28 lead with two matches remaining.
Crookston had to win both remaining matches to win the match, and Chris Goodrich came up with a big win with a 13-9 decision to bring the Pirates within a 33-31 deficit. It was all up to Evin Trudeau, and he came away with a full six-minute match and won by a 7-4 decision to give the Pirates a 34-33 victory.
Crookston improved to 2-0 on the year.

CROOKSTON vs LaMoure (ND) –
The third match of the day started at 132 pounds, and Gavyn Hlucny got the Pirates started with a win for the second match in a row as he won by a pin in the first period for a 6-0 lead. Lucas Perala received a forfeit victory, and Crookston took a 12-0 lead. Ethan Bowman continued the solid Pirate start with a win by pin in the first period. Casey Weiland had a great match and was battling back-and-forth and trailed 4-3 late in the match, and a few seconds before the buzzer sounded, he was able to get two points on a reverse and won the match 5-4. At 160 pounds, Carter Coauette gave the Pirates their fifth win in a row as he won by a pin in the second period, and Crookston had a commanding 27-0 lead.
LaMoure won the next two matches, one by pin and one by forfeit, to get within a 27-12 deficit.
Hunter Knutson got the Pirates back on the winning track with another fantastic six-minute match while winning 4-2. Ethan Boll followed with a win by forfeit, and Hunter Kresl won by a pin with four seconds left in the first period of the heavyweight match to give Crookston a 42-12 lead.
LaMoure won the next to matches by pin, and the pirates ended the match with an Evin Trudeau win by pin in the first period to win the match 48-30.
Crookston improves to 3-0 on the year.

In the fourth match of the day, Crookston took on its toughest opponent of the day in a 56-24 loss to West Fargo.
The match started with Crookston’s Ethan Bowman picking up a win by pin in the second period for a 6-0 lead. After a loss by pin at 152 pounds, Crookston’s Carter Coauette won by a pin 32 seconds into the second period for a 12-6 Pirate lead. West Fargo won the next three matches, two by pin and one by major decision. Crookston’s Ethan Boll won his match at 220 pounds by pin in 22 seconds, but West Fargo won the next four matches to build a commanding lead. The final Crookston victory came at 120 pounds as Gavyn Hlucny won by a pin in 57 seconds, but West Fargo won the dual 56-24.
Crookston drops to 3-1 on the year.

Casey Weiland got things started with a win by pin in the second period for a 6-0 Pirate lead. New York Mills won the next three matches for a 15-6 lead. Crookston won the next three matches, with Hunter Knutson winning a hard-fought battle by an 8-6 victory. Ethan Boll won by his third forfeit of the day, and Hunter Kresl won by a pin in the second period for an 18-15 lead. Crookston won two more matches, with Mauricio Arriaga winning by a forfeit and Evin Trudeau winning by a pin in the second period for a 30-15 lead. New York Mills won the 120-pound match by pin, and Gavyn Hlucny won by a pin in the second period, but West Fargo won the rest of the matches for a 45-33 victory.
