Stephen-Argyle Football plays well, but falls to Mountain Iron-Buhl at State

The Stephen-Argyle Storm had three of their first drive moving down the field, but couldn’t finish them off and the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers pulled away in the second half for a 38-6 victory in the first round of the State 9-Player playoffs played in Grand Rapids.

1st Quarter
Stephen-Argyle started the game with the ball at their own 32 yard line. Blaine Smith got things goind with an eight yard run. Raydon Woinarowicz added an eight yard run for a first down. Smith followed with a 20-yard run for another first down. The next run was only one yard, and after an incomplete pass, MIB was called for an offsides penalty to make it fourth down and four yards. The next run was for three yards and the Storm turned the ball over on downs at the MIB 31 yard line.
The Storm defense came out strong as MIB’s Micades Clines ran for five yards before Derik Dahl was hit for a loss of two yards. The next play was an incomplete pass and the Rangers were forced to punt.
Stephen-Argyle got the ball back at their own 42 yard line. They ran two plays for six yards before Woinarowicz ran for seven yards and a first down. The Storm fumbled the ball on the next run, but Owen Widner was able to jump on the ball for a seven yard gain. The Storm decided to pass on the next play and Shay Setterholm found Woinarowicz for a 10-yard pass and another first down. The next pass was incomplete and was followed by two runs for three yards and the Storm turned the ball over on downs at the MIB 34 yard line.
MIB had another three-and-out and the Storm got the ball at their own 46 yard line to start their third drive of the game. The drive was a gain of one yard, a loss of four yards and an incomplete pass before a punt.
The first quarter ended with no scoring.

2nd Quarter
MIB started their third drive of the game at their own 22 yard line and started with a two yard gain, an incomplete pass, and a six yard run from Derek Dahl to set up a fourth down and two play at their own 30 yard line. MIB decided to go for int and gained the two yards for a first down. The next play was a 16 yard run by Dahl for another first down. They next two plays only picked up one yard before an 11 yard run for a first down. Dahl ran for 12 yards for another first down. The next two plays were runs of four yards before MIB quarterback Micaden Clines ran for a 15 yard touchdown. Clines also converted the two point conversion for an 8-0 lead 1ith 10:15 left in the first half.
Stephen-Argyle started the ensuing drive at their own 32 yard line. The first play was an 11 yard run by Smith for a first down. Setterholm found Caden Pagnac for a four yard pass, but he had his helmet ripped off and a 15-yard facemask penalty was called for a 19 yard gain and another first down. MIB was penalized five more yards on the next play before a 17 yard pass to Benitt for another first down. Smith ran for six yards, Setterholm for two yards, but the next play was a loss of one setting up a fourth down and three situation. The pass was incomplete and the Storm turned the ball over on downs at the MIB 13 yard line.
MIB looked to respond and they had a great start. After a two yard run, Clines connected on a 40 yard passing play with T.J. DuChamp for a first down. MIB ran six plays and had two first downs. The next play was three yard run, followed by an incomplete pass, a holding penalty pushed them back 10 yards before another incomplete pass which forced a punt. The Storm partially blocked the punt that went 18 yards.
Stephen-Argyle was in good position again and had Smith run for five yards. After an imcomplete pass Setterholm completed a nine yard pass to Smith for a first down. The next pass was intercepted and MIB had the ball at their own 20 yard line. MIB’s first play was a Clabe Rossi 80 yard run for a touchdown. After the two point conversion failed, MIB had a 14-0 lead, which they took into halftime.

3rd Quarter –
MIB started the second half with the ball and put an impressive drive together. They ran three plays, all runs by Dahl for 11 yards and a first down. Clines followed with a 14 yard gain and runs of two and four yards. The next play was an incomplete pass before a four yard run. Clines followed with a 10 yard run before Dahl ran for 14 yards and a touchdown. After a Clines two point conversion run the Rangers led 22-0 with 7:33 left in the quarter.
Stephen-Argyle followed with a great drive that started at their own 37 yard line. The first two plays were runs of nine yards before Smith ran for 17 for a first down. Three plays later they added another first down. After another first down, the drive sputtered as they had a gain of three yards, a loss of two and two incomplete passes for another turnover on downs at the MIB 20 yard line. with 67 seconds remaining in the quarter and MIB took a 22-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

4th Quarter –
MIB started the drive with a Clines 30 yard pass to Evan Anderson for a first down. They picked up two more first downs on the next three plays. Two more plays and another first down before Clines ran for 19 yards to set up a Derek Dahl 15 yard touchdown and after a Clines two-point conversion, the Rangers led 30-0 just over two minutes into the quarter.
Stephen-Argyle started their next drive at their own 31 yard line and only gathered six yard and turned the ball over on downs at their own 41 yard line.
MIB ran for one yard before Clines ran for a 40-yard touchdown and after a Dahl two-point conversion, the Rangers led 38-0 with 7:10 left in the game., putting the game into running time.
Stephen-Argyle had a heavy does of senior running back Blaine Smith the rest of the game as he ran for 12 yards on two carries for a first down. After two plays for minimal gains, Smith ran for 11 yards and a few plays later, Smth went in from four yards out for a touchdown to get within a 38-6 deficit with 45 seconds left in the game.
MIB took a knee to run out the clock and the Rangers won 38-6.

Stephen-Argyle’s outstanding season comes to an end with a 10-2 record and they say goodbye to two seniors, Blaine Smith and Darby Benitt. Mountain Iron-Buhl improves to 12-0 on the year and will play at 1:00 p.m. in the State Semi-finals on Thursday, November 14 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
