KATIE BOROWICZ LEADS ROSEAU TO A WIN OVER PIRATE GIRLS BASKETBALL

The five-time defending Section 8AA champion Roseau Rams used outstanding defense and a tremendous offensive game by junior guard, Katie Borowicz (29 points and 11 assists), to beat the Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team 74-65 in a Section 8AA game played in Roseau. “Katie had a really nice game and made some tough shots tonight,” said Pirate Coach Darin Zimmerman. “She is a special player.”

FIRST HALF-
Roseau started the game with the ball and missed their first shot. Crookston responded with a Dani Boyle basket for a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored for over two minutes until Boyle rattled home a three-pointer from the corner and Crookston had a 5-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. “It was a good start,” said Coach Zimmerman. “Dani attacked the basket on the first basket and I was happy with the way we started the game.” Crookston led 6-2 when Roseau’s Katie Borowicz took over the game, but it wasn’t with her scoring. Katie jump-started the Rams with three assists on four baskets and the Rams went on a 9-0 run for an 11-6 lead with 11:24 left in the half. The teams basically exchanged baskets the rest of the half, but Roseau had three players with two fouls each (Katie Borowicz, Julia Braaten, and Hannah Mooney). “We need to do a better job of communicating, especially in a fast break situation,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We missed some layups in that stretch and needed to slow down a little bit.” Crookston took advantage of the aggressive fouls on the Rams and made eight of their 14 free throw attempts, but Roseau two three-pointers and two three-point plays and took a 30-26 into halftime. “We made some uncharacteristic turnovers,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We didn’t play well and Roseau had something to do with that. We struggled at times on defense and missed too many easy shots.”

SECOND HALF –
Roseau started the second half on a 9-2 run for a 37-28 lead over two minutes into the half. Crookston stopped the run with a Hayden Winjum steal for a layup, which was followed by two Halle Winjum free throws. Roseau’s Borowicz made a basket before the Pirates answered with an 8-0 run with a three-point play and three-pointer from Gretchen Theis, followed by an Emma Borowicz basket and the Pirates trailed by one point (41-40) with 11 minutes left in the game. “We came back after playing some better defense,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We played better on the offensive end and had some good ball movement and made some plays.” With nine minutes left in the game, Crookston was trailing 48-45 when Roseau’s Katie Borowicz took over the game. She made a three-pointer and after a Crookston basket, she added another three-pointer before she added a layup for a 56-47 lead. Crookston battled back with baskets from Halle Winjum and Abby Borowicz to get within a 56-51 deficit with over five minutes remaining. Crookston wouldn’t get any closer as Roseau made their free throws down the stretch to win the game 74-65. “Unfortunately for us we had too many unforced turnovers and that hurt us tonight,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We had a great effort from the girls and we will be ready next time we play them in January. It was a great crowd tonight with a March feel and that was fun to be a part of.”

Crookston drops to 7-1 on the year and will be off until they play the Hawley Nuggest in the first round of the Fergus Falls tournament on Friday, December 27 at 2:00 p.m. You can hear the game on KROX Radio. Roseau improves to 7-0 on the year and will travel to play Mountain Iron-Buhl on Friday.
