UMC BASEBALL SHUT OUT BY SW MN STATE IN NSIC TOURNEY

The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs’ NSIC All-Conference First-team pitcher Kolby Kiser was phenomenal as he pitched a complete game, striking out 11, walking one, not allowing a run, while tosing 131 pitches in the game to beat the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Baseball team 6-0 in the first round of the Northern Sun Conference tournament in Bismarck, North Dakota.

FIRST INNING –
The Mustangs first batter popped out before a single by Isaac Nett. Nett was caught stealing on a great throw by UMC catcher Kodi Miller. The next batter singled before a line out to left field.
UMC’s first two batters struck out before Teddy Giefer (Sr. Courtland) singled, and Jake Hjelle (Sr. East Grand Forks) walked. The next batter flew out to left field, and the inning was over.

SECOND INNING-
Southwest started the inning with a Max Kallenberg single and was followed by a Keenan Wenzel no-doubter home run over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead. The next batter, Jake Tauer reached on a bunt single and scored on a single off the fence. Another run tried to score, but UMC right fielder Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau) got the ball in quickly, and the relay throw to home was in time to retire Southwest with a 3-0 lead.
UMC’s Kodi Miller (Jr. Grand Rapids) singled to lead off the inning. After a strike out, Mitch Goodwin (Sr. Prior Lake) was hit by a pitch. The next two batters were retired, and Southwest led 3-0.

THIRD INNING-
Southwest added more runs in the third inning with a single, double, and walk. A run scored on a sacrifice fly, and another run scored on a fielder’s choice for a 5-0 lead.
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

FOURTH INNING-
Southwest Minnesota State continued to clobber the ball. With two outs, Isaac Nett hit a solo home run for a 6-0 lead.
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

FIFTH INNING-
The Mustang leadoff batter singled to start the inning, but the next batter hit into a double play. The next batter singled before a ground out retired the Mustangs.
UMC’s Kobe Senn (Soph. Fargo, ND) singled with one out

SIXTH INNING-
UMC made a pitching change as Isaac Roers (Soph. Stacy) came in to pitch and retired all three batters for a 1-2-3- inning.
UMC’s Jake Hjelle singled with one out before the next two batters were retired.

SEVENTH INNING-
Southwest was retired in 1-2-3 fashion for the second straight inning.
UMC’s Mitch Goodwin singled with one out before the next two batters were retired and The Mustangs took a 6-0 lead into the eighth inning.

EIGHTH INNING-
Southwest Minnesota State was retired in 1-2-3 fashion for the third straight inning.
UMC’s Jake Hjelle tripled with two outs, but the next batter grounded out, and Southwest Minnesota State took a 6-0 lead into the ninth inning.

NINTH INNING
Southwest’s leadoff batter reached on a walk. The next batter flew out. The next batter hit a ground ball to shortstop, and UMC got the out at second base, and a runner interfere call gave UMC the third out to get out of the inning.

UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion as the Mustang’s Kiser picked up the complete game shutout win. Kiser only gave up six hits while striking out 11, walking one, while throwing 131 pitches in the game.

UMC drops to 34-15 overall and will play the University of Mary at Noon in a loser-out game at Noon. You can hear the game on KROX Radio. Southwest Minnesota State improves to 28-22 on the year and will play Minnesota State-Mankato at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
