CROOKSTON BOYS TENNIS LOSES TWO 4-3 MATCHES TO FERGUS FALLS AND EGF

The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team won three matches for the second straight match and came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Fergus Falls Otters in the first match, and in the second match Crookston won three more matches but came up short in a 4-3 loss to the East Grand Forks Green Wave at the East Grand Forks triangular.  “The kids played good,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “We changed up the lineup a bit and the boys played great with more improvement.”

CROOKSTON VS FERGUS FALLS
Crookston picked up all three wins at singles with Jack Garmen, Erik Coauette, and Reggie Winjum picking up all the wins for the second straight match.

Jack Garmen played well and cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at first singles.  “Jack continues to play well for us,” said Coach Brekken. “Jack came out and took care of business.”

Erik Coauette had another long match as he won a three-setter at second singles.  He lost the first set 6-3 before bouncing back to win the second set 6-3 and won the match with a 10-7 victory in the third set.  “His confidence continues to grow and he is playing better each match,” said Coach Brekken.

The third Pirate victory came at fourth singles with another three set victory.  Reggie Winjum lost his first set 6-3 before bouncing back to win the second set 7-6 to force a third set.  Winjum won 11-9 in the third set to pick up the third Pirate victory. “He is always playing against older kids and he isn’t afraid,” said Coach Brekken. “He keeps the ball in play and battled to win the tie-breaker.”

CROOKSTON VS EAST GRAND FORKS
Crookston won three more matches and lost two matches in three sets and were edged by East Grand Forks 4-3.

Crookston’s Erik Coauette continued his fantastic play and won his third match in a row with another three set victory, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.  “He has won a bunch of three set matches already this season,” said Coach Brekken. “He is solid and continues to get big points when he needs them.”

Evan Christensen was on top of his game and as the kids were saying, he was picante.  Evan won his first match of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at third singles.  “We moved Evan to singles today and I liked what I saw,” said Coach Brekken. “Evan played well and to win 6-0, 6-2 shows that he played well.”

The third doubles team of Kaleb Armstrong and Xander Kuchan won their first match of the season with a solid 6-3, 6-1 victory. “That was their first varsity win so that was great,” said Coach Brekken. “They really played well together.”

Crookston also had two three-set losses.  Jack Garmen lost a hard-fought heartbreaker at first singles in a 12-10 third set.  “Jack ran into a tough opponent and East Grand Forks always has a tough first singles player,” said Coach Brekken. “Jack played well in the match.”
The second doubles team of Joey Brule and Nathan Kelly played well, but came up short in the third set with an 11-9 loss.  “That was a good match for Joey and Nathan,” said Coach Brekken.  “They played well and worked well together.”

Crookston drops to 0-6 on the season and will travel to Detroit Lakes on Thursday.  “It gets to be a long day, but we are seeing good growth and the competition level is high,” said Coach Brekken. “The guys are doing a great job and continue to improve and work hard and that is what we like to see.”
