CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOCKEY EARNS SEASON SWEEP WITH 2-1 WIN

Dillynn Wallace scored her first career varsity goal, and the Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey team bounced back after a pair of tough losses to earn a season sweep on Senior Night at the Crookston Sports Center with a 2-1 win over the Morris-Benson Storm.

The Crookston Pirates took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when the Pirates cycled the puck through the offensive zone, and Grace Fischer popped a puck out front to Wallace who put it in the back of the net for her first varsity goal with 10:19 to play.  “Dillynn has been playing extremely well lately taking over a center role,” said Pirate coach Tim Moe.  “She started the year playing defense and played on the blue line all of last year.  She’s just coming into her own a little bit right now, and it’s fun to watch.  She’s going to be a good hockey player for us, and hopefully, now the floodgates start to open for.”  The Pirates created several other opportunities to score, but the Storm defense blocked several shots as the Pirates were outshot 8-2 in the period.  “We didn’t get a lot of pucks to the net, but we had the better scoring opportunities,” said Moe.  “We had a couple of shots blocked and cycled the puck well. Their shots were mostly from the outside that Grace [Koshney] didn’t have any trouble with, it was more quality over quantity.”

The pace in the second period was more up and down as both goaltenders faced a variety of shots.  The Pirates would jump out to a 2-0 lead with a powerplay goal with 5:14 to go in the second.  Taylor Garrett fired a puck from the right point that appeared to be going wide as the Storm goaltender drifted out of the crease before Catherine Tiedemann reached out with one hand on the stick to redirect the puck into the top of the net.  “Catherine has been practicing that for a while,” said Moe. “That was big us. Unfortunately, we let up and gave up a goal right off the faceoff.”  The Storm scored seven seconds after the Pirate goal to make it 2-1 when Taryn Picht won the faceoff and carried the puck straight in before beating Koshney.  “She’s a nice hockey player and had many opportunities all night long,” said Moe.  “She deserved that and is going to be a very nice player for them.  I don’t know if because we got more on the offensive end we maybe gave up a little more on the defensive end.  They had more opportunities in the second.” Neither team would score over the final five minutes, and Crookston led 2-1 after two periods.

The third period was a defensive struggle as the two teams combined for just five shots on goal.  “We talked about between periods that it would key for us to not give up anything in the middle,” said Moe.  “They had a couple of kids who could hurt you from the middle, so we made a conscious effort to keep the puck along the wall.”  The Pirates were called for back-to-back penalties midway through the period, with the second coming against Tiedemann, setting the Storm up with a five-on-three power play for 1:29.  The Pirates were able to kill off the penalty without their top two skaters on the ice with Tiedemann in the box and Nora Peterson away from the team following the unexpected death of her cousin.  “We got into some penalty issues there and killing off a five-on-three isn’t something we practice, so that was big for us,” said Moe.  “Aleah Bienek and Dillynn Wallace both played that forward position on the penalty kill and did a nice job killing that off.” The Storm pulled their goaltender with over a minute to go, and Catherine Tiedemann had two chances at an empty net goal from behind her blue line sailing the puck down ice just inches wide of the goal mouth both times.

The Pirates improve to 4-15-1 with the win and will return to the ice tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. game against Prairie Center that can be heard on KROX.  Morris-Benson falls to 3-18 on the year.
