The Crookston American Legion Post 20 Baseball team was tied at 1-1 after three innings of play, but Hillsboro/Central Valley had a bases clearing double and a two-run homerun to win the game 6-2 in Hillsboro.
FIRST INNING-
Crookston got things going with a leadoff single to left field from Parker Kelly. After a flyout, a pitch hit Teagen Lubinski, and Gavyn Hlucny singled to center field to score Kelly for a 1-0 lead.
The first two Hillsboro batters were retired before a pitch hit Chase Haffely, Alexander Dufner singled, and Bryce Miller reached on an error to load the bases. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice with Crookston getting the out at second base.
SECOND INNING-
The first two Crookston batters were retired before Nolan Cassavant walked. The next batter flew out to left field.
Hillsboro’s Carter Limke reached on an error and stole second base. The next batter grounded out to second base and Limke advanced to third base. The next batter tried to bunt and popped it up. Crookston pitcher Blake Melsa made a diving catch for the out on an outstanding play. The next batter flew out to left field.
THIRD INNING –
A pitch hit Crookston’s Lubinski with one out before he was caught stealing for the second out of the inning. The next batter grounded out.
Hillsboro’s first two batters were retired by strikeout before Dufner was hit by a pitch and advanced two bases on a passed ball. Miller reached on an error, and a run scored to tie the game at 1-1.
FOURTH INNING-
Crookston’s Lucas Perala hit a line drive to right-center field, and the Hillsboro right fielder cut the ball off as Perala rounded first and was headed to second base. The throw from right field was there in plenty of time, and Perala was out for the second out of the inning. The next batter grounded out.
Hillsboro answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning as Carter Limke singled. After a strikeout, Tyson Sundby singled, and a pitch hit Tyson Lechuk to load the bases. The next batter struck out before Chase Haffely laced a line drive to the left-center field gap, and it rolled to the fence to score three runs on a double to give Hillsboro a 4-1 lead.
FIFTH INNING-
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a pair of groundouts and a flyout.
Hillsboro’s Riley Richter singled with one out. After a pop out to second base, Elijah Smallbeck walked before the next batter flew out to centerfield.
SIXTH INNING-
Crookston’s Matt Contreras led off the inning with a double. After a ground out, Hlucny walked, and the following batter struck out. The third Crookston out was a baserunner caught stealing.
Hillsboro/Central Valley’s Leshuk reached on Crookston’s sixth error of the game. After the next two batters were retired, HCV’s Dufner crushed a line drive over the left field fence for a two-run home run and a 6-1 lead.
SEVENTH INNING-
Crookston’s Perala led off the inning with a double. The next batter flew out to the shortstop before Cody Demarais flew out to right field. The ball was deep enough to score the run from third, and Crookston trailed 6-2. The next batter struck out and the game was over with Hillsboro/Central Valley winning 6-2.
Crookston drops to 10-8 on the year and will Fertile on Tuesday. Hillxboro/Central Valley improves to 8-4 on the year.
