DEVILS LAKE (N.D.) SCORES THREE-STRAIGHT GOALS IN WIN OVER CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRL’S HOCKEY

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey allowed three unanswered goals in a 3-2 loss against Devils Lake in a game played at Burdick Arena in Devils Lake, North Dakota.

1st Period –
Crookston started the game well and appeared poised for a dominant night. Kylee Meier scored the Pirates’ first goal with 7:21 to play in the opening period from Kendall Bergquist, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. “Kendall Bergquist was able to keep the puck in at the blue line,” explained Crookston head coach Tim Moe. “She turned around and fired it to the net. Kylee did a great job of seeing what was going on around her and going to the net. Kylee did a quick deflection of the puck in front of the net to knock it in.” Five minutes later, with Crookston on the power play, Aleah Bienek took a pass from Catherine Tiedemann and fired the puck into the net, increasing the Pirates’ lead to 2-0. “It was uncharacteristic from their goalie (Molly Black),” said Moe. “Catherine fell and moved the puck over to Aleah from her knees. Aleah came in on the left-hand side from the top of the circle and fired a shot that went between the arm and the body of their goalie.” Devils Lake scratched a goal back with 54-seconds to play in the period as Abbey Reule scored trimming the Firebirds’ deficit down to 2-1 after one period. “I thought our first period wasn’t very good,” noted Moe, despite his team’s 2-1 lead. “It seemed, at least for the first ten minutes or so, that we were on our heals and reacting more than anticipating. They only played two lines, so we wore them down each period to put a little more pressure on them, but at the end of the first period, they shot their goal from the point and got a redirection right in front of the net.”

2nd Period –
The two teams combined for 19 shots on goal in the second period, but only one found the back of the net. Devils Lake’s Kaylie Klemetsrud tied the game just 1:17 into the second period evening the score at 2-2. Firebirds goaltender Molly Black made ten saves in the second period keeping the score tied at 2-2 heading into the final period. “They have a dynamic player in Kaylie Klemetsrud,” said Moe. “She scored her first goal on a tip in front of the net. (Molly Black) is a fantastic goalie. We had a couple of scrambles but couldn’t get the puck by her. We did a lot of really good things. We couldn’t solve her.”

3rd Period –
Crookston outshot Devils Lake 8-4 in the final period, but the Firebirds would make the most of their limited opportunities. Kaylie Klemetsrud scored her second goal of the night with 4:35 to play, giving the hosts a 3-2 lead. “It was a play with a loose puck at center ice,” explained Moe. “Our defenseman thought about going out to get the puck and really should have, but once you hesitate you’re beat. It was a breakaway and one-on-one with Kailee (Magsam).” Molly Black finished the night with 31 saves, including eight in the final period preserving Devils Lakes’ 3-2 win. Kailee Magsam finished with 17 saves starting in place of Grace Koshney, who was out sick. “It’s hockey,” summarized Moe. “You get bounces sometimes. Goaltenders get hot, and their goalie played extremely well. Our goalie played well too. It was just a bounce here, a bounce there, and this game could’ve been different. We did a lot of positive things and just came out on the short end.”

Crookston falls to 9-13 on the year. The Pirates return to the ice on Saturday when Crookston travels to International Falls for a 2:00 P.M. puck drop. Devils Lake improves to 11-5.
