CROOKSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT HAS AN UPDATE ON COVID-19 PREP/PREVENTION AT THE SCHOOLS

Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Olson updates the community on the district’s preparations and procedures relating to the COVID-19 (coronavirus).  For the update read below –

To: Community Members

I wanted to communicate Crookston’s preparations to combat the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) as this is something that many parents may have questions on. I want to start by assuring you that the district put into place infection prevention procedures once a confirmed cases of coronavirus was reported in MN. The Minnesota Department of Health along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are monitoring and providing guidance to MN Public Schools. We continue to look for guidance and direction on this emerging situation from the MN Department of Health and our local Public Health Department.

What is the school currently doing to prevent the spread of coronavirus?

  • Increasing the cleaning/disinfecting schedules of high traffic touchpoints such as door handles, push bars, etc.
  • Encouraging hand washing for at least 20 seconds for students and staff.
  • Providing disinfectants for each classroom
  • We are also asking parents of children who are sick to keep the student home until the student is fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication

What can I as a parent/guardian do to prevent the spread of coronavirus?

  • Keep children who are sick home until the child is fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
  • Communicate with the school when in doubt about sending a child to school when they are showing symptoms of being sick.
  • Talk to your child about the importance of washing hands for at least 20 seconds.

Will the school close as a result of the coronavirus?

  • The answer is that this is a possibility. At this time, we are planning on remaining open; however, as with any evolving situation, things may change rapidly. Our priority is keeping our kids and staff safe. Communication of any closures will be issued using the same avenues as we currently announce storm closures. We would do everything possible to do so in a timely manner to ensure parents have as much time as safely possible to find childcare. I would recommend thinking through a plan in case the school would have to close for extended periods of time.
